  • I'm sharing our large homesteading family's favorite homemade ice cream from scratch recipe! Plus, come see how we have a milk cow without a "real" barn and be encouraged that it's not as hard as it may seem!
Giveaway opportunity!! We will be hosting a Livestream Giveaway, 5pm CST on July 5th ‪@TheInquisitiveFarmwife‬ To enter into the main drawing all you need to do is leave a comment on this video. The more videos watched and heartfelt comments made (all copy-and-paste comments get booted) the more chances at the fantastic grand prizes! A random comment picker will be used for these drawings. Also during the Livestream there will be random prizes given through the # tool!
    Recipe starts here: 4:06
    Ice cream makers I recommend:
The one we have now: amzn.to/469vlqn
The budget-friendly option we used to have: amzn.to/3qQNjh4
    Gelatin powder: www.azurestand...
    Recipe:
    Ingredients:
    2 cups heavy cream
    1 cup whole milk
    2/3 cup sugar
    1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
    4 large egg yolks
    1 1/2 tsp. gelatin powder
    1 teaspoon peppermint extract
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy canes (optional)
    Directions:
    1. In a small bowl add 1 cup of the cream. Sprinkle the gelatin across the top of the cream and let sit.
    2. In a small saucepan combine 1 cup of the cream, milk, sugar and salt over med-low heat until sugar is dissolved and it is hot. Remove from heat.
    3. In a separate bowl, whisk yolks. Whisking constantly, slowly add in 1/2 cup of the hot cream mixture. Then, still whisking, slowly add the egg mixture into the pan.
    4. Return the pan to med-low heat, slowly stirring while the mixture gets to 165 F. Whisk the gelatin into the cream. Then, add the cream and gelatin mixture slowly to the pot. Continue to heat, while whisking gently, until the mixture gets up to 170 F.
    5. Remove from heat and whisk in the peppermint and vanilla.
    6. Pour through a sieve into a blender.
    6. Place the whole blender into the refrigerator to chill for at least 4 hours.
    7. Blend the mixture until smooth, scraping down the sides if necessary. It should be similar to a pudding consistency at this point.
    8. Add in the crushed candy cane and pulse until mixed in evenly.
    8. Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and freeze according to your appliance's instruction manual. I set mine for 45 minutes.

I adore peppermint ice cream, but I'm not too fond of the fluorescent green that most companies have. This is an excellent option with chopped dark chocolate. YUM

I actually wonder if it would work because it’s so thick before you even put it in the ice cream maker. If you try it please let me know! I’d just skip the machine part, spread the blended mixture into a pan and freeze.

It’s a great idea to add the gelatin! Just got an ice cream maker and I am excited to try out using some raw milk from our local source. It is hard for us to acquire it though so I’m wondering- since you’re heating yours, does that negate all the benefits of raw milk (enzymes, etc)?? I guess I’m wondering if this step is crucial, then should I just use regular store bought milk and save our other raw milk for fresh drinking to maintain all the benefits?

    • @TheFromScratchFarmhouse
      @TheFromScratchFarmhouse  5 месяцев назад

If I was paying for raw milk I’d probably not use it on ice cream for exactly that reason. Technically you can skip heating it as long as you are comfortable eating your eggs uncooked and know that it will be a different texture.
