The Prince and the priest bring the idea of “unconditional love” to fruition, a concept greatly aligned with Christianity, and so it’s rarely heard of among the men in those times. Canute fought with love and resolved the problem. Death perfects someone because they can no longer take anything away from anyone again, and they give everything back to everything and everyone. Ragnar showed discriminated because he loved only one person. So we all discriminate, we don’t show the best kind of love: unconditional love.

So perfect how the have the scenes of “love” with Canute and “what does is mean to be a true warrior” with thorfin going back and forth. Fucking love this show.

you didn't miss something about Canute and Bjorn, is a little fantasy or a shonen-like thing, but it's the determination in Canute's eyes and his no fear demeanor what push back Bjorn. In this show this is the more shonen-like moment, but it is meant to be somewhat like a miracle. There are other moments where they use this similar aproach to a resolution in the history that are a lot more grounded but still it's the same idea. Next episode you'll see something similar. Faces, looks, are crucial sometimes. I like this kind of miraculous resolution to some things, in Vinland it's done with great taste.

Here’s my take on the “discrimination” conversation..
Firstly, I think it’s easier to understand if you’re a Christian or have some sort of faith based belief. Canute in real life, I believe, was a man of faith. And the word ‘discrimination’, in this context can be understood in it’s most simplistic form. The actual definition is: “the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, or disability” and we all operate, to some extent, in this way…
EVERYTHING that’s not human, is pure love. The hearts of men… we are discriminatory with love. We pick and choose who’s we love. When Ragnar said ‘death is love’. I think it’s because death is nondiscriminatory… meaning we all die. In the end we all go to dust, there’s no difference based on status or means. The snow, the wind, the sky, air, water, creation… all of that is pure love, no discrimination.
An example… when we pass a homeless individual on the street… dare I say… most of us would probably ignore (if we are being real). But why? It’s discrimination. Even though we can be the BEST person in the world, kind, considerate, etc… there’s still a sense of discrimination. All the while, we have to ‘seek it out’, this paradise that we are supposed to attain.
Again this is MY take. I’d love to hear other views and understandings about this portion 🔥🙌🏾

      @zishuredi3908 6 месяцев назад +2

Pretty much. I’d simplify it to this. If we truly love life, and everything and everyone around us, we would show it, and it would spread. You wish for everything and everyone to thrive and prosper, even if they oppose you, and so you don’t wish ill on anything, instead you show kindness to it all, which is a method of love. Admiration is also love, so beauty is love, so sight is love, so breathing and hearing and walking and feeling and tasting and life itself is love, and that’s a meaning of life. When you learn to live your life without hate… incorporating kindness at every moment… you have achieved unconditional love.

@@zishuredi3908 Yes. Most viewers stop at the conclusion that it's impossible.
However, throughout the two seasons, this anime teaches the importance of continuing to work hard for it instead of stopping thinking with the conclusion that it is impossible.

The priest was talking about unconditional love. That's why he talked about ragnar watching villagers get killed to protect Canute, or "Fawning over a king while hitting a slave with a whip"

  • @mickaellandry9726

    *I found the priest's speech fascinating* 💯👌.
From what I also understand, he explains that death is love, because death does not discriminate: it loves everyone equally.
He says it: the death accepts everything, without ever complaining: death treats everyone the same way. In Buddhism we would speak of equanimity. He speaks literally about it but it is also a metaphor (the death of the ego), it obviously also speaks about selfish love, the one who wants to possess, who loves one and not another: who discriminates.
The priest talks about it when he explains that it is like worshipping a king while whipping a slave, or when he says that Ragnar placed the Prince above everything, even his own life: *selfish love hierarchizes, has limits.* That's why in a previous episode, the Priest told the two brothers that their filial love was not the love he was looking for, when they told him they couldn't have this relationship with anyone else.
*The priest made a point when he claims that true love is unconditional love.* The snow, the sun, the dead body, etc. does not discriminate. The sun shines on everyone.
*People, on the other hand, discriminate about who they love, most of the time, they only care about those who are close or dear to them.*
Ragnar loved Canute over the lives of 50 innocent villagers. We love our family and friends 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 over the homeless person 👤 we walk by on the street.
And all the examples that Canute mentions - the snow, the sky, the sun, the wind, the fog, the mountains - they all "treat" people completely equally.
In Willibald's eyes, everyone should be treated with love and nobody should be given preferential treatment but the unconditional love that he talks about is something abstract beyond our reach, it's idealistic and a religious perspective :D
Canute development is real. It was so epic when he scared Bjorn with pure resolve and anger at God. The juxtaposition between Canute and Thorfinn is not accidental. What is a true warrior and what is love is the same question. Canute found the answer while Thorfinn did not. Thorfin is still in the cradle. *This show truly is something special, masterpiece.*

Having lost Ragnar and learned the true nature of love, prince was enlightened. This meant that his heart was now completely independent from Ragnar, his real father, and the heavenly father he believed in. And for the first time in his life, he gained true anger and his mission as a king.

“I thought his name was Zeke.” LMAO I was rolling! 😂😂😂
But also I’m so glad I’m watching along with you guys because when I watched I was like “I’m not sure I agree with all that talk about what love is” and then that’s exactly what you said. So it made me feel better.
I’ve been thinking Canute reminds me of Armin, too! Which is a good thing since Armin’s one of my top two AOT characters. 😊 Also the same voice actor who did Armin in dub does Canute in dub too, so I think the casting is perfect.

    I love this deep episode😌
The priest's thoughts on "love" are very interesting. The "love" here is not the general "love" we mean. It represents pure philanthropy in Christianity. *This priest is a very enthusiastic seeker, so he is looking for people who have reached a state that humans cannot reach. In a sense, that is certainly true. We always prioritize certain people. For example, family, lovers, friends, followers of the same religion, citizens of the same country, same status, same race, etc. And in order to prioritize those important people, we abandon or sometimes attack other people. In other words, we always think that there is a difference in the value of human life. In other words, it is certainly "discrimination" in a sense. And I think that it is very important to recognize this beautiful and ugly truth of human beings when we think about things from the other person's perspective.
