Woodturning - No one uses this wood and it’s crazy!

  • So to be completely honest, I’m not 100% sure what this mystery wood is, but it made a great woodturning project! Some friends gave this piece to me and said they pulled it out of a fire burn in the mountains of Colorado. I am about 90% sure it’s Twisted Pine, but it smells a lot like Juniper and it finished much smoother than I’m used to with pine.
I used standard woodturning techniques: after casting the piece in epoxy resin, it was straightforward woodturning to produce this fantastic, one-of-a kind piece of wood art with these crazy twists. I love it!

This is damn gorgeous! The wood reminds me of Spalted Maple which is also used as a guitar top and i‘m a huge fan of that because it looks kinda like an old treasure map drawn on parchment.
How probable is it that your piece of wood is some Crataegus or Prunus?

I have a piece of Lilac that looks just like it. I know lilac smells like juniper too when it’s cut. I’ll admit though, my tree identification is terrible at best. Really nice piece sir.

Before I get to into your video why use all that resin if you are just going to take it all back off that is an expense that is very unnecessary
