I remember you! You are so sweet and Thank you for making this video. I love seeing transformations of self love, and self acceptance like yours. Hair has a much bigger impact than we think and young girls around us see us as self representation so when we love and care for our hair with pride it exudes confidence to other girls like a domino effect.
You're so darn cute and your hair is gorgeous. I am an older, older lady that has colored (very light blonde) and straightened her hair for all of her life....UGH! Due to an adverse experience with chemicals in the dye...I am letting the white, gray, silver, whatever color is under there grow out and I am letting my hair do its curly thing. Today in church, these two ladies I do not know tapped me on the shoulder and said, "We think your hair is beautiful!" Wow, did that make me feel good. I will be checking some of your older videos to get some pointers. After all, you can teach an old dog (or gal) some new tricks. Sweet video...you are inspiration for the younger ladies.:)
I'm trying to back to my curly hair ... I'm still in the trasition, waiting my natural hair grow again but I'm exciting to learn to carry on it like you did!
I am at the realization stage that I have to start taking better care of my curly hair. I always hated having curly hair and wished that I had straight hair. I am 56 and I now miss how my hair use to curl. Thanks for creating your videos. I believe that I am the same type as you 2 and 3. Keep it up!
Seriously When you said "Straight hair was a dream for me" I almost started crying!! I tried so hard and fought my texture so hard my entire life and now just after my 26th birthday I am finally embracing the beautiful 3B I was blessed with!! I wanted to thank you, especially, as well as every curly advocate out there for getting me to see the light; to start my curly hair journey and truly love every step!!! I know this is an old video but This was really one that got me thinking about it, although I only played with my texture very occasionally at that time, it opened the door to now! Thank You so much for doing everything you do!!
Thank you! I've just started my journey last month and this kind of videos remind me to be really patient and not give up, even if it will take some time. U look great!!
I have a love story with my hair. My whole life I had people telling me I am ugly and I was always envious of my friends for that. As a teenager with a mother that hated me (including my hair), I used it mostly in ponitails and very well combed to appease her. My mother had kinky hair and hated it too as she wanted that straight hair too. Then, one day I had to go to school and I lost my elastic band. My mother wouldn't allow me to stay at home. So I was punished by going to school with my curly hair. It turned out the best thing to happen to my self esteem. My friends thought I had a perm and they wanted me to tell them what I did so they could do it too. I had to comb my dry hair (I know I know... no combing dry hair), put it in a ponytail so they could see me with my "natural hair", wet it again and wait for it to curl. I didn't use anything but coconut soap and oil at the time. My friends couldn't uderstand how I used my beautiful curls straight. From that day on, I used it curly. It became my watermark. I lived in the USA back in 2003, when natural hair wasn't a thing, and I had women ask me if my hair was natural or a wig. If I was in a bathroom line someone would always push my hair to see if it was true. Once a little girl with pin straight hair said she wanted hair like mine to her mom.
Thank you for making this video! I'm about one month into my curly hair journey after bleaching and straightening my naturally curly hair for over 10 years. I have a long way to go, but there is something so special about having my own hair back! Videos like this, with pictures showing your progress towards your beautiful curls today, help keep me going, thank you beautiful xxx
I like, never straightened or dyed my hair.... But, I never really took care of it either-i brushed it dry all the time, so it's somewhat in the middle I suppose
Yas girl my flat rock hard bulletproof hair from NY! Tons of gel and styled baby hairs! My curly hair was managed with tons of gel, Corn rows, iron my hair with a planchaaaaa 😂🇵🇷
I know this is an old video but I’m super happy I found someone who has experienced what I’m going through now. I’ve brushed my hair out since I was about 4 and I’m now 15. My hair basically in a ponytail my whole life. I knew I was born with curls but I thought that that was just a stage of being a baby. I have always still had that “wave” but I’ve now realised my hair is a natural curl. So I started the CG method this week and I’m finally starting my journey!!
Girl! You have inspired me to accept my curls! Ive damaged my hair so much over these last 10 years, for the same reason that I didn't know how to take care of them. I kid you not, I just bought over $100 worth of products to get started. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your tips and routines with us💕 I am now ready to accept my wild, beautiful mane.
Thank you very much! In Italy the majority women straighten their hair, we don't know how to deal with them. I've always tried to keep my curls as they are, but I didn't know how to style them, so now I'm doing my researches online and your videos are very good! The biggest difficulty is, I think, the fact that neither hairdressers know how to manage curls ☹️
THANK YOU for these videos... I am in the transition phase and was feeling so hopeless before I came across your channel. Thank you for encouraging all of us to embrace what we have and sharing your expertise along the way.
I recently started my journey and I’ve been using Shea moisture and I’ve been doing the curly girl method and I honestly love the results I’ve never seen my curls this curly before it’s difficult but I’m loving it
Love this!! I'm the only person I know with hair like this and damaged my hair so much through straightening it as a teenager to try and fit in with everyone else. I was bullied so much at school for having "frizzy" hair and now I'm in my 20's I'm slowly getting back my curls and learning how to look after my hair properly. Its nice to know I'm not alone. Curly girls unite!
Just started my curly hair journey about 6 months ago. It feels like it’s been a lot longer but it truly hasn’t! I dyed my hair for about 10 years straight, bleaching, dying crazy colors, there’s times where I had my sides shaved, and then on top of it I’d straighten it all down. My hair was unhealthy, but I eventually just started dying it black. I had it black for about 2 years, and when I’d wash my hair my curls seemed better. My growth also was steady. Then I made the decision to bleach my box dyed black hair, to an orange and straighten it. When my hair wasn’t straightened my curls felt limp, super damaged, and my ends literally just started breaking off. I started dating my current boyfriend around the time I dyed it orange and he encouraged me to just go natural, which is what I wanted to do for a while but never really had the confidence because my hair has always been at a weird length and the curls just didn’t look good. So since then, I’ve stopped dying my hair completely, I’ve maybe straightened it once or twice, (it actually looks worse straightened now) and I’ve been trying to bring my curls back to life. So far so good! They haven’t been this curly in years. There’s still areas that I need to work on and I’m still trying to get past this awkward length that I’ve been at for years because of all the damage. I’m still trying out hairstyles that work with this hair other than putting it in a loose bun everyday. If anyone has any tips for styling I’d greatly appreciate it. I haven’t tried using a diffuser yet but I’ve been putting in deep conditioner for curls and it seems to help with all my frizz and makes the curls more separated/defined.
So I know this video is a couple of years old, but I just started searching for curly hair tutorials and found some of your videos. THANK YOU for posting this video in particular!! I'm 39 years old, and I've spent my entire adult life straightening my hair every day because I've never had any idea how to style my natural curls My mom has stick straight hair and was never able to teach me how to style mine, and I've always hated the gelled-up disgusting frizzy mess that my hair has been when I've tried to wear it naturally, not knowing what to do. So, so much of what you said in this video is exactly what I feel, and seeing the photos of you as you were figuring things out gives me hope for the first time in my life that I might be able to have gorgeous curls someday, too!! Thank you SO much!!!
I just started my journey 3 months ago and your hair is my goal....I am in the crazy transitioning stage where one day my hair will look great and the next it looks insane....Thank you for posting these videos. You have helped me so much and I am excited to see where my hair is 2 years from now.
I used to get terrible knots in my hair back in middle school. I did a relaxer treatment at a Dominican salon back when I was 13. Never again. I started doing Keratin treatments (once a year)...and honestly after that I never had any knots in my hair EVER again. So to me it was a life savor. So I'll never speak against it. My curls have loosened up over the years, and I'm finally learning how to style them to avoid the frizz. I don't wear my hair straight as much anymore. Curly is a part of me. Thank you to videos like yours. If only youtube was around back in the day haha
I'm currently on my journey back to my natural curls...it took me FOREVER to find someone with 3A hair to show me what kinds of products to use and how to style it, so I really appreciate your videos! I just did the big chop 😩 and have committed to not dying or straightening it, with long healthy curls as my end goal. Thanks for all your amazing advice!!
I haven’t used heat on my hair hardly at all, over the last 3 years! I had blonde, “medium” hair, it was so damaged that wearing it natural was too frizzy, so I ended up straightening it all the time, and then because it was damaged I had to cut it frequently. The last 3 years I dyed my hair back to my natural color, so that I could just let it grow, and I learned about the Curly Girl Method about 2 years ago, and for 2019 I’ve made the decision to LIVE BY the Curly Girl Method! And so far I can already feel like my hair is growing so fast, and my curls look better every day, the more I learn and the more I try out new things! I’m starting to feel my curls are my favorite attribute! Love watching these videos, I love learned that the people who’s curls I LOVE, also were in my shoes at one point! It’s so so encouraging! ❤️
It has been two years since I've started my curly hair journey & it has definitely been a struggle. Some days I feel really confident about my curls but then other days I just look at it like "ugh why can't I just have a full head of curls already" 😭 My hair is at this weird stage right now where the front part of my hair is way curlier then the back and I hate it sometimes but I just always remind myself of my journey and how I'm two years strong and I can't give up. Watching videos like yours always gives me confidence and motivation to keep being natural and to love my curls. For anyone that is going through their natural hair journey please don't give up. Once you see your curls start coming back it will give you the motivation you need so be patient, keep being strong and embrace your beauty and curls 💕💗
I'm on week 3 as a wavie! I've always felt my hair was stuck in an awkward in-between state, not straight, not curly or coily. Always with my hair up! Something clicked 3 weeks ago and I decided enough is enough, time to embrace and actually find out what my texture looks like. I am SO much wavier (even quite a few proper curls!) than I thought! I can't wait to see how it progresses... and I love that the best part is how good CG is for your hair. And I have to say, as a product formulator and junkie, delving into all the new products is way too much fun.
I went thru the same thing! I was always mad that my hair wasnt straight or curly just puffy and suddenly I realized I have waves and it's not straight and I need to stop brushing it dry lol
I'm actually 62 years old and I have just started my curly journey...I'm actually in 3rd week. I've noticed that my hair has curled nicely. I don't use boxed hair colors, I've only used henna, but even with a plant-based henna you still have to be careful of over coloring your hair. I'm of Italian descent and my hair is a straight wave with curls so I'm a mixture of 2 a + 2C. (LOL I just started understanding that!) I lived in Bronx, NY, and like you, I strayed away from my curls and just blow dried my hair out because I thought curly hair would be too juvenile of a look for me. Because of watching your vids, I began to realize someone else had my kind of hair ...I began embracing my curls, but I found it very difficult to determine what's the best products to use. I knew what I couldn't use, I just couldn't figure out what I needed to use instead. It's kind of hard to figure out because many of the RUclipsrs who have tutorials tend to try different products so it's hard to determine what's best for your hair. The one thing I had to keep in mind was no crap in my products; so I figured if I went organic I shouldn't go wrong! The other thing that I learned was that, not only did the products make a big difference, but also the order that you place them in your hair. But I was getting really, really discouraged because, even though I never used boxed color in my hair, I did use a flat iron for a little bit. I still wasn't all that happy with my hair because it was too flat and kind of boring! I'm very glad that I didn't use a flat iron too long, otherwise my curly journey would have been a lot longer. When I started watching your Channel, I realized that I could use mousse just on the crown of my hair near the scalp to give me the volume that I need. I've always stayed away from mousse because it was so drying. But you were using "Not Your Mother's Curl" products, so I tried their blue sea kale and coconut water mousse, and I love it! Their defining curl cream was a little drying to my hair so I opted for a different one; I'm using a defining milk instead. It's a lot gentler and I don't need a lot of water to give me the moisture that I need. For my styling gel I use "Biotera" which also defines very nicely but I also like the fact that it leaves a cast but it doesn't flake and it's silicone, alcohol, SLS, and all that other nasty stuff, free! And then of course I use a leave-in conditioner that you also tried from "Maui Curl Quench" (leave-in) which works very nicely because of the shea butter and coconut oil. I also utilize your suggestion that when I condition my hair I only do it half way to the ends of my hair. It's a great tip and it works nicely without weighing my hair down. You may be much younger than I am but I truly enjoy your videos because I think your struggles are very much like my own and therefore I can relate to yours, and when it comes to looking good and being confident and happy with yourself, age really is just a number! I'm very pleased with the way things have turned out so far. I'm still in the process of training My Curls which means that after I wash and condition, sometimes I use a bonnet and a hair dryer. The Bonnet dryer method for me is equivalent to a diffuser because it disperses the air throughout the bonnet without direct contact. Does a great job. I just wanted to say all this to thank you for the tips and the excellent tutorials that you deliver. I love especially that it comes from your heart. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more videos from you. Sincerely, Cat
This is exactly the video i needed. I'm at the beginning of my curly hair journey and I'm doing research to see how i can go back to being curly and what i should do to my hair. my hair is obviously naturally curly but i've brushed it out since i was young. my mom had wavy hair so she didn't know how to do my hair and from a young age i hated my curls and thought they wee ugly and that straight hair was so beautiful. Now that i'm in college i want to figure out my look and i've realized i have no idea what to do with my hair and i never really have. now tht i live in a more humid place my curls are starting to return and now i realize that i love my curly hair and I want my hair to be curly like its supposed to be. it so encouraging to know that others have this experience too. Although i wish it wasn't so common that people with curly hair early on learn to dislike their own hair and have to go through so much to figure out how to maintain it. nonetheless, i am thankful for the internet and people like you who will help me along my curly hair journey.
Thank you! I’m 9 months no straightening and I’m starting to see my hair curl so much nicer. I still have highlights on my ends and I’m hoping once i get rid of them my ends will be even more spirally. Videos like this give me hope that I’m on the right track!
I'm only 15 and going through my curly hair journey. My hair confuses me tons though. Like some curls underneath are strong coils, some of my hair is just a normal curl and the very top layer is dry and frizzy and I don't know how to fix it? And I can never get volume at my roots and no volume makes my forhead look really big😂. Any advice? - and btw you and your hair are stunning😍💗
The curls underneath are always tightest because they aren't exposed to the sun or product, or just air pollutants, as much as the top layer. If you check out my curly hair tutorial, I share my tips on how I get volume at the roots. Just try not to straighten or dye your hair and deep condition it once a week. Thank you for watching!
I had the SAME thing when I was your age. Now at 25 as I go through my journey switching to silicone/sulfate free products have helped so much with the health of my hair. After about 2 weeks my roots are curling more then they ever have. I use Devacurl NoPoo and One Condition and while my hair is pretty wet comb with a wide toothed comb and I use the Defining Gel really focusing on smoothing and covering each curl then scrunching the water out. After that I plop (1,000 videos on this) with a t-shirt to encourage my top layer to curl for about 15-20 minutes then let it dry. Once it is dry I take a small section in the front and gently flip it to the other side and it gives some nice volume around my face. I have watched tons of videos and tried out a bunch of stuff till I found what is working well and I encourage you to do the same!! Good luck!
Your journey is incredible! I was the same way in that I had no idea how to take care of it. I straightened it quite a bit in high school and used non CG friendly shanooos and conditioners. I started my journey during my sophomore year and got some tips from a couple naturalistas on my floor in my dorm. Then I started really taking care of my curls and looking up products on Pinterest and straightening the hair way way less often. Like once every 4-6 months. I've officially been straightener free for 6 months and I'm not going back. I straightened it in April of this year for a length check, but I decided to stop because I don't like it straight anymore. It's boring lol. My hair currently has never been better! I found out about devacurl a year ago and I love them so much! I'm a gel freak!
I am starting my journey now. My hair is very short. The back curls up nicely, 3A like yours. The sides, are very hard to get curl and even parts of it are almost completely straight. I get really discouraged. I just found your channel and this is only the second video I've watched. I am going to look, but if you have not done a video on exactly what you did to get your curls back (deep conditioning treatments, protein, no heat, etc.) I would apprectiate it. Also, I have quite a few grays, so I use henna to color my hair. But no harsh peroxide or drying products. Also, until I was 24, my hair was actually straight. I got a haircut one time, and my hair started to curl up. I am worried one day my curls will just go away. The back being as curly as it is, is encouraging. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you so much for your video. Your transformation is amazing! I definitely understand the NY tight ponytail because I also use to do that hairstyle back when I was in middle school to avoid dealing with my curly hair because I was the only one in my family with curly hair and I didn't know how to take care for it. Your video has inspired me to not give up because I am only 1 month within this journey and I have some straight pieces and some waves and if I am lucky a curl. Prior to this journey, I would occasionally straighten my hair and it got a little better (straightened max 3 times in 2016) but my hair has been stuck in between a wave and straight pieces for a year (was not on the curly girl method and never heard about it until a month ago when I started this journey) even my mom noticed how wavy my hair has gotten compared to how curly it was when I was younger. I'm so happy to see your video.
Yes, I'm in the process of getting my curls back. I started using DevaCurl and the curly girl method several years ago but over the past two years, I damaged my hair with chemicals (coloring) and heat (straightening). Definitely an inspiring video. I've been watching several of your videos and just subscribed.
Hi, I'm from Germany and as you can see on my picture, I have had an undercut. I was straigtened my hair for a long time and like you did, I missed my curls. Now I let them grow. I watch a lot of videos about curly hair and look for perfect products. I ordered the first products from deva curl and I can not wait to finally use them. I like your videos so much they are so inspiring. ♥️♥️♥️
your story sounds very similar to mine....I finally stopped bleaching my hair and am regrowing it out...it took a few years but my curls are back and I'm finally loving them...the transition phase wasn't pretty but I made it out....so worth it...it's so much easier being who you are then pretending to be someone your not...too much upkeep
I love this video. I know this is an older video, but I'm on my curly hair journey now. I gotta say it's pretty tough. I haven't fallen in love with hair yet. I don't know how curly my hair is because like you I did a lot of dying and strengthen it. I've always hated my frizzy wavy hair. Right now I have 2c wave, but maybe it's more curly than I think. Thanks for the video. 😊
I remember until middle school having ultra frizzy hair as I would describe them I also had white hair so I was on a whole bunch of treatments and changing doctors and I remember hating my hair to the extent of shaving my head until last year when I just cut them very short like a pixie cut cause I hated them and I had 0 confidence before that but just as I had a pixie cut I could see my hair curl in a way I have never seen them before so beautiful so soft I was really grateful that day it made me realise my real hair type since then I've discovered so many things and have finally started to understand my hair and see that there were absolutely no problems with my hair but that it was just curly beautifully curly and also a big thanks to the people around me my family my friends everyone who just embraced my hair and also the ones who critisized it cause now I just feel so good about it all, I love my hair thank u
I'm 15 I used to treat my curly hair horribly, like brushing it when it was completely dry and things like that. This video and your channel has inspired me so much!
I ran into your Videos last night as I searched " how to brush curly hair" at 2 am. Sadly I never developed curly girl care discipline/habits and now at 29 finally decided to research it and embrace it more. I've had many hair dye processes, Brazilian blow outs and keratin treatments. Additionally I went about eight years of getting sewed in hair extensions. I would braid most of my hair and get straight blondish human hair sewed in. I would straighten my hair daily to blend my hair to the extensions. All this was crazy expensive and my hair started falling off and I developed what looked like a scalp rash that eventually made it scary to continue neglecting my scalp. About a year ago I decided to give up the fight with my hair. I didn't feel pressure to straighten it and stopped dying it. I have cut off most of the hair I have dyed in the past. For some reason since all my family is straight haired (except my mom) I felt like that was the way my hair should be since I'm Latina. Plus I was teased about my curly hair and my Mexican cousins called me black (which now I'm like that wouldn't be bad at all). Anyway, I met my boyfriend and he is just so supportive and not superficial at all and I feel confidence to just begin styling my hair with coconut oil while wet. It looks okay but not as voluminous or as defined as yours. Bolton line is, I'm so inspired and excited to begin using curly hair products and embracing my curly hair. You're an inspiration and know that I understand how you felt about Alba after I watched your journey. Better finding the curly world later than never. I know my partner and I consider having kids and his mother has the longest curliest hair. I want to be able to teach my kids how to care for their beautiful curly hair and not let society make them feel ashamed of their locks as I once was. I definitely felt the anti Afro sentiment from people and ridiculously felt shame. I can't believe I went through all the trouble for acceptance or to fit in. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Just discovered your channel yesterday and I’ve been binging your videos since. You’ve inspired to start a curly hair journey. I LOVED when you mentioned you always wanted what you didn’t have (ME). I have loose to wavy curls and I would love to see what my natural hair would look like being healthy and using the products for MY hair type. THANK YOU!! I’m so esscited
I recently started my curly hair Journey 2 weeks ago. I have seen some improvement. I had literally straighten my hair almost every day since I was 20 and I am now a 35. I really miss my curly hair that I used to have growing up and in high school. I'm trying the curly girl method and I am seeing some improvement. Your video inspires me to continue working on my hair. My hair is still struggling with some frizz I'm hoping that will get better over time.
I am 8 months in to my curly hair journey, I am so thankful for women like you that take the time to share your stories. I just saw that Ouidad Climate Contrl routine and I happen to have all the same products (including the Aveda and the brush!) so I am going to attempt that routine tomorrow morning. I've never used a my brush to distribute the the product while my hair is wet, but I am going to try it out. Again, thank you so much and by the way you are absolutely adorable!
I just found your channel, your curls are gorgeous! I have gone through the same process, brushing it out and having a wavy frizzy mess in high school, to straightening and keratin treatments! My main issue though was living in central America for 7 years - the hard water ruined my hair. I straightened it cause there was nothing else I could do. Now I've been a year back in the US and after clarifying shampoos, new growth, and shea moisture restorative conditioner and lots of Argan oil...finally have my curls back!
Protein treatments and religiously deep conditioning and PATIENCE. I started last May and I probably have another six months before all of the damage is grown out. I went from 2A to 3A/B in that time, but I have different hair types allover my head now when it didn't used to be like that. I did three semi chops. They weren't big chops, but I wish I had just big chopped in the first place. This last hair cut really made the biggest difference. My biggest advice is to have fun with it. Enjoy trying new products and product combos and WRITE THEM DOWN. Try to really enjoy the journey. You WILL reach your destination, so relax and enjoy the ride! PS: Thank you so much for the videos. Your hair is super similar to mine, so I learned a lot with your suggestions. :)
Started my journey about 2 weeks ago... I honestly don't remember how my natural hair looks like because I've been straightening it since I was like 6 years old and bleaching/dyeing since 16 (I'm turning 21 next month). I hope my curls can be as gorgeous and voluminous as yours! Thank you for this video and your channel. 💕 I'm also from NY and have fine/thin hair like yours. Gonna try out your tips to see if it helps with my volume :)
I’m going through a healthy hair journey now. I straightened my hair for 15 years because I didn’t know what else to do with it. So in the summer last year, I decided to get my hair back to health. The worst part though, for me , is having to cut my hair to get the dead ends off. My hair is not as long as it is in my profile anymore. But it’s definitely much healthier and more defined. Your video really inspired mean and is pushing me to continue. Being patient is so hard but the long term effects are worth it. I’m almost there but I know I still have a little ways to go.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL SO MUCH, I KINDA RELATE TO THIS BUT I ALREADY HAD THE JOURNEY QUI8TE FEW TIMES AND I ALWAYS END UP REGRETTING MY BAD CHOICES. BUT RECENTLY WHEN I JUST GAVE UP ON MY CURLS AND MY HAIR BECAME WAVY AND ALMOST WITHOUT A SHAPE IN MOST PARTS, I BLOWDRiED IT WITH A DIFFUSER WHICH IS EASIER TO AVOID THE HAIR MADNESS, MY HAIR WENT BACK TO CURLY BUT OF COURSE STILL NOT DEFINED AS IT WAS. I AM TALKING ABOUT 2 TO 3 YEARS NO CURLS. FROM THAT MOMENT I WAS SUPER HAPPY BECAUSE I LOVE WARING MY CURLS AND NOW I AM ON THE DEEP CONDITIONING STEP AND CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS TO GET MORE DEFINITION. YOUR VIDEOS ARE SO HELPFUL ESPECIALLY TO SOMEONE THAT FORGOT HOW TO DEAL WITH CURLS. PS: YOU ARE SUCH BEAUTY :*
You and your hair are beautiful!! 😍 Growing up my mom would do my hair but she has straight hair (shes native american) , so there's the start to my problem lol she also encouraged dyes in my later teen years. Its been the colors of the rainbow from ages 16-24. I had dye damage, heat damaged, dry, frizzy hair. I played sports my whole life so tight updos, and tight braids were a go to. I attempted to grow it out for a year, no dyes and no heat but i kept the same products. Which was my biggest mistake looking back now. I started the curly girl method in Feb. I've seen a huge difference in such a short amount of time! no dyes, no heat. Started using Devacurl decadence line (for max moisture), devacurl coconut style cream and ultra defining gel. Also using shea moisture streghthen, grow and restore leave-in and masque treatment. My new problem is that I'm soooooo impatient now. My hand just keeps reaching for the scissors or i can't wait my 3 days to give it some love lol thanks for sharing your journey, and for motivation! You and CurlyPenny are hair savers!! #NotAllHeroesWearCapes lol
LOL at the hashtag. Thanks girl! So glad to hear that you're letting your natural curls do their thing. It does take time to reach their full potential but as long as you show it some TLC they'll be fine!
Thank you so much! I just came across this video. I am at the beginning of my journey and it can be really frustrating to not see result. I really appreciate the encouragement and inspiration.
Currently in my hair journey, I'm going for length first! My hair about 3-4 years ago was up to my chin, and I bleached my BLACK hair to a like 8-9 level BLONDE about a year and a half ago, and I'm trying to undo the damage of that as well. With trims, it's getting healthier, but it's hard to convince myself to get it trimmed when I'm trying to grow it out to waist length. Currently I'm at the middle of my back, so I'm getting there! Love this video! Also, you're goals af ❤️😩😍
This is so inspiring! I just found your youtube bc my hair is short and in that awkward stagewhere the new growth is super curly and then the rest is a looser curl/wave and I am dying for it to go back to how it used to be. I literally almost cried watching this video
I'm in the beginning stages transitioning from a Brazilian Blowout. It is very frustrating having to wait for my new hair to grow out. Your journey gives me hope that eventually my hair will be healthy again! Thank you :)
Got a keratin treatment in March at my moms push AND I HATE IT!!! On top of trying to embrace my curls I have poofy weird roots and limp, lifeless waves. Thanks for the video! At the beginning of my healthy curls journey....
My hair currently looks very similar to yours...have been on my journey for 6 months but I've seen your more recent Videos from this year so I'm excited to see if mine looks like that 3 years from now! Thanks for this channel :)
I am in a frustrating part in my curly hair journey. I never used heat much and I have virgin hair (never have dyed it)... however my curls are just not there! On the ends yes, on the top my hair is straight! :-( I feel like I have relatively healthy hair due to my mostly lack of heat use and no dye... but I have a hard time getting curls on the top half of my hair. I plop, rinse cold, don't brush, and deep condition. Trying to find the right products but almost nothing is making the top of my hair get curly again. Any advice would be appreciated!! Oh and I would say I am five months into my hair journey.
thank you so much for this. i never knew how to manage my curls before and decided just today to start embracing my natural texture again, which is quite close to yours (2c-3a). i just gave myself a diy "deva" inspired trim and a deep condition and now i'm writing this with my hair wrapped properly for bed for the first time ever - thanks to your videos. btw you are so beautiful, you look like shakira during the "whenever, wherever/suerte" era (my curly haired idol as a teenager!)
I love sunkissalba too! I started watching her videos because of her hair and she’s also very inspirational. I’ve been straightening my hair since I was in middle school. From time to time I wish my curls were like yours but I always went back to applying heat 😒 .. it’s just so much easier to maintain. Now, I want to start my curly hair journey and I’m only ONE month in and I’m dying to straighten my hair... I hope I can make it, your curls are very inspiring!
I've just gone through my curly hair journey. Although my hair still continues to improve everyday, the state that its at now beats having perfect straight hair any day. I used to be so frustrated with my hair because I didn't know how to manage it, and it always looked crazy. Idk where I would be without youtube 😅 its been about a year since I started my journey. And let me tell you. My hair looked so bad at first 😂 my hair looked stringy, frizzy, and weird. But it was so worth it. I've straightened my hair one time since starting my journey and when I did i hated it. It didn't feel like me anymore to have straight hair. I just learned to love my hair for what it is and how it wants to be.
I’m trying to embrace my curls but as you know it’s not always easy. My bangs are the hardest to get that great curl because of all the blow drying. And one day it’s a good curl day and sometimes it’s not so great which is so aggravating and makes me blow dry . Thank you for this and all your videos. I just found you and I’m binge watching 😉 thank you keep them coming.... I need all the help I can get .
Thank you for sharing your story. I think I have just begun on my curly hair journey. I am 38 years old and I want to embrace my natural hair to help increase its health. Unfortunately, that meant getting a major unexpected chop off at the salon 😭. Thank you for your advice on finger coiling. It has help to make my curls look nicer and more polished. I only hope my hair will grow longer and healthier before 39😏😋
I have been damaging my hair with heat for 8 years NO THERMAL PROTECTANT BTW 🙄 and had only dyed my hair twice and had gotten highlights once (not too bad compared to some other stories that I’ve heard tbh) - I was fine with curly until my cousin straightened it and I fell in loveee - up until 8 months ago when I started working as a sales consultant for a professional beauty supply store, I went in with curly one day and everyone hyped me up, and they seemed in love and I’m like okay- didn’t realize curls weren’t seen as often (btw I’m a 2c, 3a!) but I HAVENT PICKED UP A STRAIGHTENER IN ABOUT 8 MONTHS! I’m barley on my journey but am so hyped and I’ve got my bounce back and they’re more defined than they were before , still have a long way to go but I’m committed 🌻🖤🖤
I am on week 3 of following CGM. I have blow dried and heat styled my hair forever and this summer decided to take a break. Shockingly, it seemed like my hair was curly/ wavy and I decided to look up online how to deal with it. Found the curly girl method and I am really trying it. Right now, I can't seem to manage the frizz and I really miss the shine that silicone products gave my hair, because there is no shine now. Been conditioning like it's going out of style, so I'm just hoping as my damaged tresses grow, my natural shine will pop back. Lol. Your hair is lovely!
Hey girl! Just found your RUclips page and I feel you with the baby hairs ! I was born and raised in the Bronx and always had my hair slicked to the side with my name hoops . That's was my signature style! Your hair is gorgeous and it's awesome to see representation of different journeys. Keep doing your thing !
You know u were the youtuber, that inspired me to go natural, and I actually just started back in July, but am more serious about it now, I think the last time I straightened my hair was back in November. I can really relate to to u as a child and in middle school cause I was always getting things done to my hair or just dry brushing, then adding gel....while dry...😶 it was a mess, thank you soo much, you are such an inspiration😍. Now I'm in highschool knowing the does and don'ts of curly hair, and try to help other curly girls at my school with their hair😍😁😁
you’re my sunkiss alba. my hair has always been super frizzy my whole life. my mom has a teeny bit of waves & my dad has curly hair, i’m finding out now that mine is a mixture of both. i was always confused on why my hair had body like my moms but was always so frizzy and messy. my mom didn’t know my hair was different than hers either so i’ve pretty much never been able to see my natural hair type. im on day 2 of using curly care shampoo 😂 it’s the only product ive switched, the only other variable i changed in my hair care routine was i stopped brushing my hair and i started lightly combining it when it’s wet. already i see a big difference so i’m pretty excited to implement better products and techniques for the rest of my routine. i never use heat on my hair and i just got a hair cut so my hair is decently healthy, im hoping this will go well and im excited to meet all the volume and texture my hair is about to get as i learn what works for me, thank you for making these videos and helping girls like you and i
I just started the journey . I went to get a Deva cut this week and I hate it. Ugh so discouraged. I just want to straighten it but it won't look good I guess cuz the stylists said this cut is not for straight hair. I just started this journey 2 months ago so....I'm glad I found your channel, I need the encouragement.
Thank you so much for making this! I’m in the early stages of accepting and treating my curls right and This motivated me to continue on, thank you and I love all your videos!!❤️
Thank you for this video! I started my journey 5 moths ago and just like you, you tube has helped me so much! Sunkiss alba, yourself, nathi, Rozio, curly penny... the list is long and you are all amazing ladies! I straighten my hair for 20 years to the point that I did not even remember what I looked like with curls!! I wish I loved my curls when I was younger like I do now and you girls are my inspiration! Your hair is beautiful btw!! Xx
I'm so happy to hear that!! Congrats on starting your journey! It's so cool that people can start their journey at any stage in life and you can also be an inspiration as well! Thanks for watching! :)
I love your videos! I came up on a buzzfeed video about curly girls getting devacuts about 2 months ago and began my journey then. I haven't dyed my hair in over a year, but was heat styling it until about a month and a half ago because my waves and curls don't start right at the top of my head and my hair was very short. Now it's been about a month without heat styling. I'm growing my hair to be like Christina caradona's cut. My hair is like yours, straight when wet, but dries 2c/3a when I scrunch, so you having similar hair gives me hope that my curls will get better and better
I know you made this video 4 years ago but this is my story. I was 49 and had to have cervical spine surgery with placement of hardware that will be there permanently. My hair was always very straight except when I was a small child. But after that surgery my hair became curly. The new growth obviously. I’ve never been able to quite wrangle it. I have a mixture of curl types I think. I do have this rogue small section on the right side that shows up at the game looking exactly like a lightning bolt⚡️. It looks like it belongs to Mortecia Adams head. I always put my hair up in a microfiber towel but I don’t let my hair dry much. But I don’t know what products to apply when for best results. Right now I’m not pleased at all. And I’m living in coastal North Carolina where the heat and humidity run high.
I know this was years ago but still wanted to comment. I’m currently just starting my curly journey. My older sister has always had wavy-curly hair. When she was younger it was curly, then it straightened, then curled up again when she hit puberty. She now takes good care of her curls. Me, on the other hand, have always had straight hair. When I was younger it was always cut short. I had thin strands of hair, but it was thick in the sense they I just had so much. I had a slight flow to it like a wave, but always brushed it out and everything. As I got older, my hair became more and more thick. It also got more, and more dry. It made me so frustrated because I would get out of the shower and it would be okay. But then my hair would start to bunch up as it dried. They would then pull apart and then fall and frizz. I was so frustrated with how frizzy it was and didn’t understand why I couldn’t just brush it and it be fine. It also certainly didn’t help the fact that I did competitive swimming 4 days a week. So the chlorine also damaged my hair more and got even frizzier. Just recently because it’s off-season, and I think I’ve been using shampoos and conditioner without sulfates and silicon recently, my hair has started to wave up. So my mom ordered some stuff to try for my hair and test it all out. My older sister kind of gave me the runs about how to do it. Just yesterday I started the journey. Officially. And I may or may not have failed. The shampoo went well, and so did the conditioner. That was until my sister told me to put a tiny bit of conditioner in my hair without rinsing it out and then getting out. Well, after I put a Shea moisturizing smoothie in my hair and scrunched it up. The next morning I woke up; it felt like my hair was really greasy and almost appeared not dry, but in fact was dry. It looked lighter than my normal hair color and hated it. I think I may have left too much conditioner in afterwards. I rinsed it in the morning to get rid of some. The only problem was then all my curls fell out because I had to re do all the care steps. So tomorrow at my aunts I’m going to retry. I don’t know my hair type cuz it’s never been fully healthy or taken hair of. I think it will be somewhere along the lines of 2b, 2, and some 3a.
Wow this video is so relatable, I've been through all of those "before" stages and I'm only 16 😂. I am currently in the process of starting my journey and your videos have helped me a lot. Your hair is literally goals and I'm motivated to get to that stage and have my curls looking like yours. I had to cut a majority of my hair in order to start fresh and I'm using DevaCurl as well. I started seeing a huge difference right when i started using the product, my hair is finally getting some shape. I'm excited to see the end results and have all the struggle pay off in the end.
I've just started my journey and I'm really excited about it. Thank you for posting this and for being such an inspiration! Just found your youtube channel and I feel like I've already learnt sooo much just by watching 3 or 4 of your videos. You are amazing!
Hey, I'm in middle of transformation, just find out about curly girl method and started to practice it. About year ago i've stoped to ironing them and i already see results but still wonder if this method will improve my curls and health of my hair :) i'm almost the same type of curls like yours, so keep healthy, keep loving yourself and add more videos about hair :)
Hi thanks so much for talking about your curl journey! It has really inspired me to embrace my curls; right now my hair is quite frizzy so hopefully it will look like yours eventually! Also I love the colour of your hair could you do a video or give some tips on how you get it like that? Thanks again!
I’m On this journey right now! I big chopped my hair January 2016 then once it grew back towards the summer up to my shoulder (barely)- I dyed my hair blonde! I didn’t like it because the salon I went to didn’t do a great job, but I think the future I’ll try again with a better salon. Then after dying it blonde I dyed it dark chocolate brown by myself. The box dye made my hair so ruff, so recently, during October I big chopped again! So this is me. I wear a wig Bc I like it a lot and it helps me take care of my hair under... I still have pieces of the dark chocolate brown on my ends but it’s okay. I’m praying that my hair grows long past my shoulders
Awesome video!!! I too, have been on a journey to get my curls back for about 7 months. I had Japanese straightening done for about 10 years . Absolute hated my hair growing up . Now that I'm older I'm trying to embrace my curls. I have been using shea moisture products but will definitely look into deva curl products. keep up the curly hair videos :)
I been thinking about going on this journey but I am so scared! and i love dying my hair! which is making it difficult to start! also my hair is very long so my curls tend to hang, I am scared to cut it as short as you because i dont know how i will look. but i really want o embrace my curls and learn to love them! thank you so much for making this video! it helps a lot !
I agree that bleaching hair blonde does make you lose some curl. I have def notice that with mine; however, when I touch up the layers it will help in make them bounce up. That’s all the dead hair being cut off😬😊
Thank you for this video. I love you! I've been looking for some inspiration to get my healthy curly hair back and this is definitely it...I am excited!
I am going through that journey right now your story sounds a lot of what my hair had gone though so thank you for your videos they have helped a whole lot !😀
Just starting. Trying to find the right products for my curl type. Thanks for letting us beginners know that there is hope at the end. Your hair is beautiful!
I was going through my journey and not going to lie, I got impatient and eventually did the big chop and went bald. I can’t wait until my hair grows back so I can take better care for it rather than how I had previously.

OMG this video. I identify with all this. I was born in NY to puertorrican parents, I know the struggle of my mom dealing with my hair. I kept struggling with my hair growing up. All your kid pictures were my hair! LOL ... Now living in Puerto Rico, the humidity is a constant battle. I just started my curly hair journey in April. Things like this keep me inspired!
I have naturally 2C/3A curls and have decided to embrace them after years of straightening. Hoping to get my beautiful curls back that I haven't seen in almost 25 years. Currently in Week 1 of my Curly Hair Journey
I'm 5mos in or so and my hair is still changing. I have virgin hair, no dyes no silicones but did use clarifying sulfates (ack!) so my hair is still doing it's own thing when it wants LOL. I'm learning my hair LOVES protein and cannot get enough of it, so I had to buy a type of olaplex (cheaper Walmart version called neutral protein filler) and have treated my hair once with it so far (and it is aaaawesome). Oh the things I wish I knew when I was younger. 💖👏
Yes I totally agree! Thanks for watching and thanks so much for being an inspiration to me and many others!!
Joy Before Her - i found u recently.. fan of u both now :)
SunKissAlba can this be.... both of my favourite curly hair goddesses on the one comment..... my life is bliss, love you both!! Xx
aw thank you! thanks for watching :)
yayy thanks for watching!! :)
Aww I love that. So glad to hear you're letting your natural hair do its thing! Thanks for watching :)
Carol is such a sweet comment! It made me smile so wide
It might be really late but the curls on you profile pic are gogeouse
messymess That’s sweet. And, never too late to make someone feel good. Thank you.
I'm trying to back to my curly hair ... I'm still in the trasition, waiting my natural hair grow again but I'm exciting to learn to carry on it like you did!
im in the beginning... it sucksssss!
It'll be worth it just hold on! :)
c.mackenzie your hair looks so cute
Hope you're doing awesome now!
I hope u did it☺️
Can you post an update comment. Where are you now?
This is such a great reminder that I have to just treat my hair well and wait for new growth to recover from a decade of Deva Curl damage.
Thank you! I've just started my journey last month and this kind of videos remind me to be really patient and not give up, even if it will take some time. U look great!!
Yes don't stop! It'll be worth it in the end! thanks for watching! :)
I'm in the beginning stage. Like I literary started yesterday 😂. I'm glad that I found your channel.
I recently started my journey and I’ve been using Shea moisture and I’ve been doing the curly girl method and I honestly love the results I’ve never seen my curls this curly before it’s difficult but I’m loving it
Just starting my curly hair journey! So excited to get my texture back!
Yesss so true, thanks for sharing that encouragement! You're right it will be worth the wait! Thanks for watching :)
Good luck!
I dye every so often i use. Aveda be curly and avanti
Same!!!
I have curly hair but never knew how to take care of it. Thanks to your videos I learned how🙂
Your journey is incredible!
I’m just starting my curly hair journey!!! Thank you for inspiring me to start and making this feel manageable and possible ♥️
Yes, I'm in the process of getting my curls back. I started using DevaCurl and the curly girl method several years ago but over the past two years, I damaged my hair with chemicals (coloring) and heat (straightening). Definitely an inspiring video. I've been watching several of your videos and just subscribed.
I love your hair on the lighter side. I notice that lighter hair or highlights really make your curls look more defined.
My hair is still struggling with some frizz I'm hoping that will get better over time.
i am in the beginning and it is really frustrating..😭😭😭
I am 8 months in to my curly hair journey, I am so thankful for women like you that take the time to share your stories. I just saw that Ouidad Climate Contrl routine and I happen to have all the same products (including the Aveda and the brush!) so I am going to attempt that routine tomorrow morning. I've never used a my brush to distribute the the product while my hair is wet, but I am going to try it out. Again, thank you so much and by the way you are absolutely adorable!
Wow that's awesome that you have all the products I mentioned! Hope it turns out great for you and thank you so much for watching! :)
I'm also from NY and have fine/thin hair like yours.
Growing up my mom would do my hair but she has straight hair (shes native american) , so there's the start to my problem lol she also encouraged dyes in my later teen years.
Just watched ur video and decided I am going to start my curly hair journey. I'm ready to embrace my curls and stop straight it.
Thank you so much! I just came across this video. I am at the beginning of my journey and it can be really frustrating to not see result. I really appreciate the encouragement and inspiration.
I am still in the beginning of my curly hair journey and im already bored🤣 btw thank u for this amazing video❤️❤️
I feel like I have relatively healthy hair due to my mostly lack of heat use and no dye... but I have a hard time getting curls on the top half of my hair. I plop, rinse cold, don't brush, and deep condition. Trying to find the right products but almost nothing is making the top of my hair get curly again. Any advice would be appreciated!! Oh and I would say I am five months into my hair journey.
Elise Marette I hope you have happy hair now! I "fixed" my virgin hair with protein treatments.
Have you figured it out? Sounds just like my hair and it'd be great to hear where you are now.
Elise Marette sounds like my hair as well
Sounds like you might be lacking protein. Give it a shot
thank you so much for this. i never knew how to manage my curls before and decided just today to start embracing my natural texture again, which is quite close to yours (2c-3a). i just gave myself a diy "deva" inspired trim and a deep condition and now i'm writing this with my hair wrapped properly for bed for the first time ever - thanks to your videos. btw you are so beautiful, you look like shakira during the "whenever, wherever/suerte" era (my curly haired idol as a teenager!)
This is how my hair looks now, so I have hopes my hair will look like yours does in your newer videos. Your hair is gorgeous.
Keep doing your thing !
ayyyy a fellow bronx girl lol. thanks so much for your kind words and thanks for watching! :)
Now I'm in highschool knowing the does and don'ts of curly hair, and try to help other curly girls at my school with their hair😍😁😁
you’re my sunkiss alba. my hair has always been super frizzy my whole life. my mom has a teeny bit of waves & my dad has curly hair, i’m finding out now that mine is a mixture of both. i was always confused on why my hair had body like my moms but was always so frizzy and messy. my mom didn’t know my hair was different than hers either so i’ve pretty much never been able to see my natural hair type. im on day 2 of using curly care shampoo 😂 it’s the only product ive switched, the only other variable i changed in my hair care routine was i stopped brushing my hair and i started lightly combining it when it’s wet. already i see a big difference so i’m pretty excited to implement better products and techniques for the rest of my routine. i never use heat on my hair and i just got a hair cut so my hair is decently healthy, im hoping this will go well and im excited to meet all the volume and texture my hair is about to get as i learn what works for me, thank you for making these videos and helping girls like you and i
Stfu
Thanks again!
thank you! I actually did do a video on my hair color and cut :) Check it out in my Hair playlist
I'm in rhe beginning stages. Just got my Deva Cut last Tuesday. Trying to hold on... Your video gives me so much hope!!! Thank you!!!
I'm in my 4th week of doing the curly girl method. It's almost been a month already :) my curls and waves have changed so much already
That's great to hear! Keep maintaining your curls- the results are so worth it! :)
I’m 52 years old and just now learning how to rock my curls...lol. Thank you for your videos and your kind spirit!
Ur story is so relatable to my situation ! One month two of my journey thank u so much for posting
Thank you for watching! :)
Just starting. Trying to find the right products for my curl type. Thanks for letting us beginners know that there is hope at the end. Your hair is beautiful!
Aww that's great! There's definitely hope! Thanks for watching :)
