Pok Gai hom ga chaan, means drop dead and your entire family also dies as well in Cantonese. That actor who talks to Keanu is James Hong is an ABC. He is born in Minneapolis and his ancestry is Cantonese.
It was very awkward to hear them both speak mandarin to each other. Sounded so unnatural. Would have been better for them to speak cantonese to each other.
Oh my god, I'm so glad you picked that clip (1:55) and explained what it means, because just a few days ago I read a fan-translated Chinese novel, and the translator probably didn't know this phrase and left it unexplained. I was so confused why in the middle of an important battle someone was talking about wanting to fart!
Just a fun fact. The Cantonese term Hum (Whole) Kar (Family) Charn (slaughter), was the worst thing you want to hear from coming from emperor. It meant your family clan or lineage would be titally wiped out. Same goes for Keanu, when he says it, John Wick will wipe out your entire family, to cut the grass, you need to get rid of its roots. 😂😂😂
Are you familiar with James Clarke? He is an Australian who recently performed in Mandarin, the Chinese version of play ‘Shawshank Redemption’ in Shanghai? You can listen to his most recent interview on SBS Mandarin Australia. He would definitely edge Kevin Rudd out.
For Eric Bana's confusing mandarin part, I guess, could be " Xue de xiao ni de zai jian"(学的校你的再见). Although it doesn't make any sense by grammar, it might mean "it's school time, goodbye!" and then his daughters (are they?) answer" no papa!" to express they don't want to go to school.
@ Thanks for replying~ But actually, from my experience, sometimes native Chinese speakers will omit pronoun in daily dialogue. By grammar, of course it should be" "爸爸,我不要", and "爸爸不要" will cause arbitrary meanings, but oral Chinese is also a language related to the situation. I would say " 爸爸, 不要!" is understandable to Chinese if there is a tiktok video filming scene like this.
You should also check out the South Korean actors speaking Mandarin in South Korean movies. Some are good, some are atrocious like their Western counterparts.
Most Westerners tend to speak Mandarin with some Cantonese accent with strong tonal sounds where Cantonese have 7 and Mandarin only has 4. This is because they were influenced by their tv and media from the old days till now because Hollywood and others don't know what Chinese sounds like in China and as such picked up the sounds of the Chinese language in Chinatowns where many overseas Chinese are mainly Cantonese.
This was really interesting not that i am a chinese learner nor do i want to learn chinese but this was in my recommended and it was worth watching, but out of all actors that can speak chinese, you forgot John Cena or in chinese Zhong Xina ahahaha still, very good content.
Read, write, use spaced repetition, flashcards. Follow the HSK levels, most learning resources are focused around that standard and it'll give you an idea of how much you should know at each level. Build a general foundation and then use language exchanges or tutors to practise speaking. Speaking is one of the most vital steps because it forces you to expand your active vocabulary, which is the essence of language understanding. This is the backbone of language learning, how you perform each step is individualised. Just avoid learning from textbooks.
First learn the basics with text books, flash cards and a teacher. Then get into an environment where you are forced to use it. I.e. go to China or Taiwan for like 6 months to a year.
All the movie star speakers were rubbish. The two gentlemen in this video are, on the other hand, amazing. I am native speaker of Cantonese and Mandarin.
Bradley's mandarin was absolute disaster, sorry to say. I remember watching that scene not understanding what the heck he was saying, not a single word, I thought he was mocking the language...😅 I speak very well because of my mom, she constantly talks to me in mandarin so I wouldn't forget!😂
You are quite strict, haha. I would switch Amy and Tom, though. Rosamund sounds excellent! Tom's sentence is short, but the pronunciation and tone is quite correct. Keanu is like, "most foreign actors in Chinese dramas speak like this"

Keanu Reeves’s grandmother is and speaks Cantonese, and spoke Cantonese to him when he was young, that’s why he speaks better Cantonese.
Ahh, makes sense 👍
Bet he heard that bit of dialogue from Granny often!

Rosamund Pike definitely sounded the best. Her pronunciation was pretty close. And I learned a new Chinese expression from China!

Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke have two sons, both fluent in Mandarin.

James Hong, the older actor with Keanu, is first gen American but grew up partially in Hong Kong.
I think within China, there are also regional pronunciation and tone differences in spoken Mandarin.
There are! 😁
Absolutely
Yup. For example, Taiwanese Mandarin sounds distinctively different from Beijing Mandarin.
中文说十里不同音。Different pronunciation for ten miles, different customs for hundreds of miles
😂😂😂 great job 🎉. Learn Chinese is a ❤loving experience
I’ve been waiting for this lol

Although Loki's line was short, it was pretty good. The pronunciation and tone actually sounded better than Keanu Reeves.
I'm first 😂 i don't know much Chinese but this is definitely a good channel. Keep it up 🎉

Very helpful channel
Keanu Reeves is so cute. His Cantonese sounds more natural than Mandarin
Has Mira Sorvino been considered?
I read that she have studied in China before!
Please do a grading of the contestants for the Chinese Bridge competition.
Fun Fact: Rosamund Pike's son won that.
Just love you guys. Thank you entertaining absolutely 🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
Rosamund’s definitely the best, close to perfect if not already.
6:49 that sounded like a normal, natural southern Chinese/Canto accent

I have zero clue what he was saying... If you have figured out, wow, you should be a mind-reader 😂
ah, yeah, something like that. And following that logic they should have said "爸爸,我不要“ Daddy I don't want to (go to school) not just 爸爸不要
@ Hahaha~ 100% guessing! I have no clue either.

Timothee Chalamet crushed it in the 1st instalment of Dune. I was hoping that you'd include him.
Oh I forgot about that, I watched that on a plane recently. Well, I guess part 3 will have to be made
How is Don Cheadle in Rush Hour 2 not on this list! Most fluent Cantonese I heard.
It is the sloooooowwwww speed that separates the native speakers from the wannabes.
Yeah the Chinese in that limitless movie backfires big time, textbook of how to make a fool of yourself lmao

Keanu Reeves was an alien in this movie.
