"Have you ever talked to a pedophile?" Amos throws out a startlingly brutal line as though it's common life...which only shows what has been common in _his_ life. But he identifies Holden as "righteous." He recognizes a Paladin.
I just noticed Diogo has a very "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"--ish poster on his mirror.
Transcranial magnetic hyper-stimulation is a real thing. It's been practiced for a hundred years...but I don't think it's as specific as shown in the series. Amos was hoping lack of empathy was a condition that was curable. We know that Amos was raised as a child in brothels, now we've learned that
The lieutenant seemed to give Bobbie latitude, but I learned working with Marines that it's a stupid lieutenant who doesn't listen carefully to his gunnery sergeant and keep the gunny on his side.
They showed us that Julie seemed to have a near-death vision of Miller (in his hat) along with the bird. Something there seems metaphysical. I think we know enough about Miller's investment. Julie is not Miller's flame, Julie was Miller's spark. We need to think more about Dawes: "Underneath that ridiculous hat there is a Belter yearning to be free." That was Dawes talking, but it was also the writers talking.
I agree with you that Alex is overwrought about the situation. I think that is really a reaction to inner negativity of having abandoned his family.
Naomi is dealing with a real conundrum with Holden. She's a Belter. We see that whenever she's with Belters, she falls right into step with them. She loves Belters, she identifies with Belters, and to her Eros wasn't just a tragedy, it was a holocaust. The fact that Holden refuses to sympathize with his lover's own beloved people is a problem.

"Best liar on the boat". Lol Such a great reaction. Made me chuckle.
Amos was so interested in Cortazar because he had the same thing: lack of empathy. But it wasn't from a procedure, it was from his messed up childhood. A self-defense mechanism. I believe it's something he struggles with, and why he chooses to be with GOOD people.

@@WarpReactor just because another character describes her as "the best liar ON THE CREW" doesn't mean she's just a liar, and you have to take everything she says with a grain of salt - only that she has a greater capability to lie than than the other four (two of which are unusually honest people, and one that seems like a terrible liar who crumbles immediately upon interrogation). You haven't been shown Naomi being actively or passively deceptive much at all; she's been keeping her past quiet, but does come clean at least a little bit about it, and that doesn't seem like enough to have "deceiver" as a primary character trait. You have to weigh your paranoia against Occam's Razor sometimes when it comes to characterization.

Miller shooting Dresden: Dresden killed ~⅓ of the Belter population by taking out Eros, so think of a not-especially religious Jewish person running into, say, Himmler… also, really reminds me of the U.S. funneling Nazi scientists into U.S. R&D programs (like NASA) after WWII. Sure, they tortured and killed a bunch of people but the government just couldn’t bring themselves to “waste” all that potential innovation and Miller saw this type of situation playing out and nipped it in the bud.

I guess what Julie did for Miller is remind him and help him find his identity as a Belter who feels loayalty to his people. Remember he was the asshole cop who was born Belter but dressed like an Earther, working for an Earther corp that turned out to be corrupt, other Belters accusing him of being a traitor to his people? Julie was kinda the opposite. A privileged Earther who sympathized with Belters so much that she became one of them, even going as far as going against her family and dying for her believes. She was someone with a deep passion that jaded Miller had totally lost.

    • @Thanaeon
      @Thanaeon 5 месяцев назад +7

Also, I think the thing she gave him was purpose. When we first meet Miller, he's just going through the motions of life but nothing really affects him. Then he gets this kidnap job dropped on him, but the subject of the job starts intriguing him. Then the mystery that unfolds intrigues him. And before he knows it, his life has purpose again - this mystery and this woman are the most alive he has felt in years. Then, when pursuing them, the rest of his life - his job - gets taken away.
At that point, finding Julie and solving the mystery are the only things left in his life that matter to him at all. Without his job, he doesn't really have a future and he didn't like his life that much anyway. So this thing that he's pursuing is the only thing that matters to him anymore. And when he finds Julie dead, well, his mission just changes from rescue to revenge.

There are clues as to Miller's motivation. Revisit the scene where Julie sees Miller - hat, bird & necklace. It is the image of him looking for her. She was infected and desperately wishing for someone to come find her - someone from Ceres. Dawes wasn't looking for her but Miller was, and that's who she saw. She didn't see him as he was on Eros but as he was on Ceres. Recall the scenes of Miller watching the bird, or was it the bird watching Miller? Miller told Semi that he believes in her, "That's all I got." Miller doesn't even know why he's so driven. Now Miller is seeing Julie and we're given information about the protomolecule that shows it can send out some type of signal - possibly made from the people it consumed - that can be picked up at Tycho station.
Put all that together and shake it around a bit and ask again what is driving Miller.

    Okay, some thoughts.
Firstly Errin-Wright is a patriot. He would always put 'Earth first' and would be horrified at anything and everything that threatened Earth. However, patriotism is the virtue of the vicious. So, he is willing to do evil that good might come from it.
Amos, is a product of his experiences. So he has not necessarily been 'modified' but he has been changed by the things that have been done to him. He would be interested in how such a procedure would be done and undone because it might be of use to him. As Naomi said, He's always just needed help with the world.

Regarding the Fred johnson Avaserala exchange: He sent her the coordinates to the wreck of the stealth ship from last episode (season 2 ep 2) the one that got shredded to swiss cheese by the roci in close quarters.
Its not the Data from Lopez. I don't think he ever told holden he has that (on screen anymway). He already used that information in his speech condemming earth where he proved that the stealth ships are earth manufactured based on their engine signatures and all that info he has from lopez. If i remember correctly that was basically dismissed by the UN as Fake (then chrisjen found blueprints for them in that martian ambassedors office on those pencil datasticks but has no way to come clean with it since its not saying WHO they are for. the Protogen link is missing to her till now. Without that evidence it would point at earth which well... thats her faction. makes no sense to shoot onself in the foot intil you can find the culprit to pin it to).
Also i think the Lopez data was used to make the Combat sim Alex trained in. reference was all the combat capabilities observed by the ships during the donnager battle. The position of weapon hardpoints, speed, Acceleration, RCS thruster placements, Projectile speeds of PDC and railgun, Charge time for that,.... all the information was right there to make an "accurate enemy model"
Instead this time he has a mich bigger playing chip he handed over to Avaserala: A Semi-intact in the flesh Stealth ship. Data can be faked. Try faking a perviously functioning Stealth ship matching all previously released data (like that it came from earth's Bush Naval Shipyards) including authentic battle damage and dead crew that has Records tracing back to Protogen (just like Cortizar's employment history)...
So yeah. He gave Chrisjen a Hammer and Protogen is the nail...

Travis being born on Earth means he's always going to get some amount of shit, but without the added tension of the strike on Deimos, there wouldn't be any real heat behind the words. You mentioned towards the end how Mars's government seems a lot more streamlined than Earth's, and that's something that struck me early on as well. I'm not going to call Mars fascist, because that would be reductive, but, from a historical parallels point of view, the first thing the Nazis did when they took power in Germany in '33 was to start their program of "Gleichschaltung," which doesn't have a good translation into English, but basically meant "an alignment of goals." Their idea was to give the populace a singular goal, and streamline all aspects of society (government, media, arts, entertainment, ...) towards that goal. In Mars's case, that goal is Terraforming (with a capital T), or turning Mars from a dead rock into a garden.
My point here is that if something happens that changes the way towards their goal, Martian society as a whole is going to turn on a dime and change direction, no questions asked. In the show's past, when the Terraforming project was threatened by a blockade by Earth, Mars turned from a society of builders into a society of war. They're still in that mode at this point in the show. But what would Mars turn into if there was another paradigm change? What would even happen to Mars if they somehow lost their original goal? Those are scary thoughts.

In this show Mars is a downright military cult. It does have a fascist bent, but it's more just a cult of military hierarchy.

@@TheDanEdwards so far, the only Martians we have seen are military people. It's not surprising that this is the conclusion that is drawn.

    Miller’s like… pick a ship, any ship?
Miller definitely picked an awkward choice, but it was an epic choice.
I guess he wasn’t technically on the ship, but he decided that it should go.

7:33 - Naomi was just as short-sighted and irrational as Miller here. Dresden was an unarmed mass murderer who was about to spill the beans on who had been funding his research, who else was involved, what they had discovered, etc. Rather than simply playing along and killing him *after* they had exposed the others, Miller ensured that Dresden took that knowledge to the grave with him - a decision which has far-reaching in-universe consequences. It was a colossally stupid thing to do. - I still love Miller though!

    • @davebcf1231

Not really. Dresden said he was only willing to cooperate if he was allowed to continue his research "unrestricted." He was directly saying he wouldn't give them anything unless he could continue committing genocide. He could simply just give them a trickle of information as they allowed him to continue his "experiments" in order to assure his safety. Both Naomi and Miller were correct that he'd never be held accountable if he was allowed to cut a deal. Just study history a bit and you'll find plenty of examples of people trying to justify pure evil with an "it's for the greater good" argument. As long as people don't see themselves as being part of the group that will be sacrificed for that "greater good" they are susceptible to that line of thinking. It's actually creepy how easily so many viewers are convinced by it. Miller and Naomi are 100% correct on this one, and it's basically the only time in the entire series that I fully agree with Naomi. Miller even says it. "I didn't kill him because he was crazy, I killed him because he was making sense." He knew that people are susceptible to being swayed by that argument if they aren't part of the group that's going to be murdered.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but Avasarala is basically not present in the first book. So much of her inclusion in the first season is original to the show or drags up in the timeline some book 2 plotlines
