@@rdkirk3834 Being ignored by irrelevant "awards" is not being "underrated." It's rated 8.5 on i m d b. Should be at least 9.5, so you may be technically correct, but not by much. If people rated it at 6 or 7, definitely. Maybe the word you're looking for is underappreciated.
@@BButcher-hg4nr That's not what underrated means. For something to be underrated, it has to be rated, first. Lower than it should be. It's not a huge deal, but it helps to use more precise language. If you find people who have never heard of The Expanse, I would stay away from them...
I swear, The Arborghast being disassembled is one of the cleverest, most creative, best executed scifi special effects ever. The hybrid being erased in the Roci's exhaust was pretty darn excellent too
That moment was one of a number that happens in this series which confirmed to me that the writers were really knocking it out of the park in terms of proper, imagination-feeding, truly "alien" behaviour concepts, and not just unexpected events purely for shock value. This is one of the reasons why so many people rate it so highly, but there are many reasons.
The hybrid "Firing up the barbeque" scene reminded me visually of the starchild at the end of 2001. It was one of those "Yes! Our crew is safe!" moments, but with a touch of sadness for the hybrid. This show does nuance REALLY WELL.
15:30 Bobbie has a great line in the books, I think in the scene before. It goes something like "without my suit, I'm a badass. With my suit, I'm a weapon of mass destruction." Or something to that effect.
Not only was all of that last scene beautiful, the dialogue, scenes, and music, but it is also a REALLY efficient use of time. They wrap up those other storylines while doing her monologue.
Discovered this yesterday, binged all these reacts and realized I’m up to date now and it kills me. Honestly rewatching this while watching you watch it blind is such a delight. And I completely know what you meant in previous episodes about Firefly and this. Both do such an incredible job of making the crew not only relatable but interesting and complex. And as someone who finished the series, I’ll say nothing spoiler related but that I’m loving the TTRPG analysis. There’s some characters that haven’t seen much screen time yet and of course more to come that I forgot only come into the fore in later seasons! All around, smart writing, amazing acting, epic cinematography and wild emotions.
This is episode 2 of 16 of the show's incredible hot streak. Naomi's monologue is great by itself, but it might have the greatest set of "B-roll" film ever assembled. Seeing the Arboghast disassemble like it did continues to amaze me to this day. And Bobbie's majesty speaks for itself.
Bobbie isn't just a Martian Marine, she's Force Recon. She's a green Beret, Seal Team 6, and Rambo all rolled up into one. She almost doesn't need her power armor against private security forces. 😯
NO SPOILERS; in the books, she knows that her Gatling Gun will tear through the security, and the bulkhead behind them, and the bulkhead behind that so she gets... creative. I won't spoil how 😀
I’m loving how much you actually react. The emotions, the comments, I’m here for it man. Feels like I’m watching it for the first time all over again cause I get those same feelings watching your reactions.
Great reaction and analysis! So many great moments in this episode! Naomi's monolog over the scenes of Bobbie in her suite wrecking Mao's goons and the Arbogast being disassembled! Amos's conversation with Holden.... to good! I'm sorry but I cant side with Naomi not destroying the sample. She betrayed her family. Hard for me to get past. Looking forward to season three! Its a banger!
Of note; cameo by Adam Savage of Tested/Mythbusters on the Arborgast over Venus. He's friends with a lot of the production staff. He got a bunch of behind the scenes interviews with actors, prop makers and costumers but they contain minor spoilers for season 3.
As usual, it's so rewarding to see someone very intelligent watching this series, and giving deep & insightful commentaries. My fav of this one: "To pick a favorite episode of The Expanse is a fool's errand". Beautifully said. One note from my own perceptions, and I may be wrong. When Mao's man was offering terms, I always thought that the look on Cotyar's face wasn't that he was considering agreeing to them, but rather that he was just told that there is a racing ship available. I always assumed that was him thinking, "Ah, a way off this ship..." and trying to think of how to use this new information. I'm so looking forward to sharing Season 3 with you. Imo, the best season of all. Have a great week! And thank you again for showing your love for this series, in so many ways.
Thank YOU, my friend, for all the kind words! Cotyar is one of my favorite characters in the fact that he acts like you would expect him to react...and then are shocked when he acts exactly the way you think he should act :D Have a great week as well!
20:00 Prax is the best. BTW, in greek mythology, Praxidike is the goddess of exacting justice. In the book, Prax tells how people used to make fun of him for having a woman's name, but it turns his parents named him after the jovian moon Praxidike. Which, of course, is in turn named after the goddess, but he says his parents didn't know that.
Maybe you could collab with Nerdy Nightly as he’s also planning on an Expanse TtRPG soon. They finished reacting to the show earlier this year. Another great reaction. Can’t wait for the next one ❤
8:22 😂 Avasarala, out of her element, pissed off at Errinwright: That motherf**ker. Cotyar, pinned down, bleeding out from a gunshot wound: Language, please. God, I forgot how _fantastic_ the visuals were in this show. The sequence of the hybrid climbing around on the outside of the Roci was mind-blowling.
This is the video that I look forward to every week, thank you so much for putting out this content, for your diligence and thoughtfulness as a watcher of the show
This show simply has more pinnacle level of excellence episodes, than any other series, period. The ratio is absurd, and the worst episodes of TE are still brilliant- no moment of screen time is ever wasted. There are almost no wasted plots or exposition for no purpose.
26:08 there is that o-face again. There will be alot more in Season 3. The last two episodes are the beginning of what i call the roller coaster that last until the end Season 3. You won't believe the twists and turns in the story.
This episode got some really juicy conversations! and as you said multiple times, the show is just showing off some amazing special effects!! the wrap around outside the Roci, the disassembly of the Venus shuttle. just eye-candy galore! I can't wait to see your reaction to moments and reveals coming up in season 3! keep in mind though, this waiting years on the next season is relatively new, back on network times, you only had to wait during summer break, 3 months for the shows to come back on air.
38:00 - Let me tell you, as you will now enter Season 3 - when we were on that first-wach journey through season 3 waiting a week for the next episode felt like a year.
I always have to tell reactors... this was actually the very first episode I watched 😂 So bizarre. I was flipping channels and there was an Expanse marathon going. I saw Cortazar, whom I knew and loved from Spartacus, and decided to watch him... Bad timing, but also good timing because I was hooked. The marathon started over and I kept watching. I love your Amos love. Almost all reactors have him in their top 5, which makes me happy... but you have the same adoration for his character that I do.
I started on ep 4, in a way. I saw a video of a breakdown of the donnager battle. I didn’t even finish watching that, I knew I had to watch the whole series. I knew it was coming, but I was surprised it happened so soon in the season!
The betrayal by Naomi here... aarrrgh! She almost always does the right thing and has the right idea, and so it's easy to get used to thinking of her as the moral center of the crew, but she has a severe case of "my way or the highway." If anybody else makes a decision she doesn't agree with, she's all over them. But here, the crew took a vote to destroy the protomolecule sample, but she decided on her own to disregard that, and she lied to Holden's face about it. And then she decided, on her own again, to give it to Fred. She fesses up here, but she's still rationalizing that she did the right thing. We'll have to put a pin into it here because potential spoilers, but this isn't over.
Naomi has lived with the constant subjugation and repression of her people and just recently witnessed a genocide against them. A holocaust. Do you really blame her for trying to prevent that happening again? She faced a moral dilemma. Betray her family or betray her people. Consider Alex's line in the bar to the absent Amos about being the kind of person who does nothing to help, or allows horrors to occur by one's inaction. Consider also that she was the Belter outvoted 3 to 1 by Inners. It's a great big juicy moral maze with no right answer. Part of the strength of the show. Doesn't actually happen that way in the books.

"Is there a plan B?" Remember...Holden never has a Plan B. Back when Bobbie regained consciousness on Ganymede, we saw the drone hover overhead and blink a red light. Then the hybrid's chest began glowing and exploded as Bobbie turned away. But somehow the hybrid on the Roci knew about the failsafe bomb and ripped it out. When Avasarala, Bobbie, and Cotyar first got on the shuttle to Mao's yacht, Cotyar was late getting on. He said he was attending to their "luggage." That would have been Bobbies armor. That loose torpedo warhead on the Roci was the warhead they had removed from the Protomolecule torpedo. When I was active duty, we used to say, "When the elephants start dancing, the mice need to leave the room." That's what Mao's goon was talking about. Prax may have delayed for a moment to see if there was any humanity left in the hybrid, but he also had to wait until the very last second to make sure the warhead was always within the hybrid's reach until it was too late. If he'd tossed the warhead too soon, the hybrid would have gone back to the reactor. Remember Naomi had the Protomolecule torpedo on her computer screen as the Somnambulist was being challenged by the Martians. That's when she sent the coordinates to Johnson. They gave us enough information to know where Strickland and Mei are.
@MattNolanCustom Thing I've not got an answer for is how they had the armour in the first place, Bobby didn't have it when she escaped the Martian embassy & requested asylum.. 🤔
@@Markus117d the Martian delegation brought the armour to the peace talks as supporting evidence for their story. They wheeled it across the conference room, behind Bobbie, in its crate and the UN took it away to inspect. Remember Errinwright asking his techs over the comm to go over it again and look for exotic biologicals after Bobbie blurted out about the "enemy" not wearing a vac suit. The UN still had it when Korshanov was poisoned.
"But somehow the hybrid on the Roci knew about the failsafe bomb and ripped it out." The protomolecule collects all the data from it's constructs within the Solar System, including the hybrids. That's why it reconstitutes human bodies on Eros better than on Phoebe, and that's why protomolecule was more interested in spaceships on Venus, rather than human bodies, in which it already had not much of use anyway at that moment. So, in time the new hybrids simply learned to get rid of their failsafe detonators. Pardon my English, I'm not a native speaker.
@@Markus117d The armour was stripped of ammunition and any inconvenient data logs, and transferred to UN government for analysis. If you remember, Errinwright was pretty thorough in his attempts to get any new data on Mao's project from that exact piece of armour. I suppose, Chrissy snatched it out after that.
@@pspirto8014 basically yes. The authors and show runners admit they drew a lot of inspiration for the general setting, tone and style for The Expanse from the original Alien film.
Fabulous! I knew you'd pick up on lots of the nuances in this also action-packed season finale. Very advance warning: I see a number of other reactors at the moment hitting copyright blocking problems when they hit S4 and S5 (probably S6 too, we'll see). NBC Universal have the physical (DVD, Blu-ray) distribution rights and it seems they're coming down hard on people using clips from the Amazon funded seasons specifically. Fair Use terms are vague. I think you may be fine (or may have no trouble if you appeal a block) as your ratio of added content to replayed content is higher than many - keep those preambles and post discussions long! But, if it really comes down to it I would recommend reaching out to the writers / showrunners. Ty Franck and Naren Shankar in particular. They understand the value and promotion that good reaction channels bring to the show and the books, and have intervened in the past to help overturn copyright strikes (many of which are auto-generated by algorithms which match bits of video or audio). Keep up the great work, and good luck!
So short sighted. If more people saw quality reactors loving the show... and even if it does not drive more disc sales, the people watching this are already fans, they aren't missing out on any sales because of a guy in a Beratnas Gas jumpsuit! 😀
@@pssthpok I kind of get why companies who have paid for the rights to make money from the exploitation of intellectual property often act like this against people who are making something (even if it is just notoriety, and not money) having not paid for that right. But it rarely makes actual sense in the big picture view and is often actually self-sabotaging. Perhaps there is a "give them an inch and they'll take a foot" fear about it too. Streaming of music and visual media has massively devalued them in the public's view and these publishing companies are feeling it.
Originally this might have been where the series died as it suffered the Netflix curse of being cancelled after this. THankfulyl then Sci Fi picked it up for another season and after the third Amazon then took over for the next three seasons. And now we are waiting to see if anyone else will pick it up to finish the last two books.
Not at all what happened, and Netflix never had anything whatsoever to do with production of the show. Alcon Entertainment owns the IP and produced all six seasons of the show. The first three seasons aired on Syfy, with Netflix acting as distributor in some regions where Syfy doesn't air. Syfy dropped the show after three seasons because they were losing a ton of money on the deal due to not having a streaming option and that's when Amazon stepped in and picked it up. (Amazon actually picked the show up before season three finished airing on Syfy). Just like Syfy and Netflix, Amazon only acted as distributor. They had nothing to do with production either.
Bunch of nonsense here. This was never a Netflix show. Netflix only had the distribution rights outside the US and Canada during the first 3 seasons. It was also never in danger of not being renewed for season 3. The show is made and owned by Alcon Entertainment. It was ordered and payed for by SYFY for the first 3 seasons. Then they didn't renew it for a fourth season, and Alcon was offering it to other companies (including Netflix who didn't want it), and it was then saved by Amazon after a big fan campaign, who financed another 3 season. However, neither SYFY nor Amazon produced or ever owned the show, and Netflix had nothing to do with this at all.
Great stuff. And you’re only halfway through book 2. As for favourites? These two aren’t even in my top five Your face mirrored Adam Savage above Venus after the Arboghast was disassembled “Because disassembly lends to different pathways”

Thank you for the kind words, my friend!
As for the TTRPG, I'm likely going see who would like to play (online via Zoom). Will have more information as we get closer :)
In the books, part of the luggage - Bobbie's power armour crate was labelled "Avasarala Formal Wear" 😂
"But somehow the hybrid on the Roci knew about the failsafe bomb and ripped it out."
The protomolecule collects all the data from it's constructs within the Solar System, including the hybrids.
Burning up the Hybrid in the drive plume was a nod to the ending if the original Alien film 😯
That scene is from the 2012 book 'Caliban's War,' book 2 of the series. Was it put there by the writers also as a nod to Alien?
@@pspirto8014 basically yes. The authors and show runners admit they drew a lot of inspiration for the general setting, tone and style for The Expanse from the original Alien film.
Ridley Scott’s two sci-fi masterpieces, Alien and Bladerunner, have provided inspiration for sci-fi in all media.
16:52 My God we need an intervention this man can’t handle this show
Thank you for the info, my friend! Will definitely keep the 'powers-that-be' in mind going forward :)
Really enjoying your reactions, good work😊
Thank you, my friend!
Originally this might have been where the series died as it suffered the Netflix curse of being cancelled after this. THankfulyl then Sci Fi picked it up for another season and after the third Amazon then took over for the next three seasons. And now we are waiting to see if anyone else will pick it up to finish the last two books.
Last three books*
It was never a Netflix series. The studio Alcon made the first three seasons with SyFy. Netflix were only the distributors in some regions.
If you enjoy TTRPGs, and the Expanse universe, another fun world is the Whitewolf Publishing TRINITY universe.
you're right about other scifi material having to be measured in comparison to this. it's my favourite show ever :)
Great stuff. And you’re only halfway through book 2. As for favourites? These two aren’t even in my top five
Your face mirrored Adam Savage above Venus after the Arboghast was disassembled
“Because disassembly lends to different pathways”
ABC FTW!!! Always!!
Beratnas!
I hit 450!!! WOOT!
Thank you, my friend!
Before you start the TTRPG session, I strongly suggest reading the books (or audio books)
Absolutely will, my friend, thank you!
If you are dreading the show ending, may i suggest the expanse books (audiobooks are also amazing)? The series is complete, and all books are out.
Plan to, my friend, thank you!
Oh man, what a great reaction. I follow you on Patreon to help the channel, but I prefer to wait for the RUclips release every thursday
Yes, you are right, the day that I saw the last episode of the Expanse, I run to read the book 7
No spoilers, but the last trilogy, specially book 8, is, how can we say it? Lets say that in line with what it came before
Honestly, I can't think of a scifi show that surpasses the Expanse. I can't even think of any show in general that surpasses it. On the same level maybe, but better, no.
You’ve probably been told already, but for season three DO NOT watch the opening credit scenes. There is a massive spoiler hiding in one of them.
Season 3 has a ridiculous pace, the show was firing all cylinders.
Good that you got in there early. We’ll all keep reminding as we build up to that episode
@@pablom-f8762it’s like S4 of Babylon 5. They had two seasons of material and one season to do it.
I'm not getting any audio on this for some reason.
14:28 I always thought that was cheap; we knew she’d survive
Bad news: Got unsubscribed for some reason
Good news: I got a whole season to binge
You're such a good reactor. Have you considered doing "Lost"?
Thank you for the kind words, my friend!
I watched the first 2 seasons of Lost but planned to go back and watch/rewatch the entire series :)
