You are so right that a budget gives you freedom and peace of mind. I cannot imagine going back to the days of worrying whether I would have enough money to meet all my needs, let alone wants.
I see my barber weekly, not because I need to get cut that often, I just enjoy the experience and the benefits that much. I like feeling as though I look a certain way and so I plan for it. I had the thought just yesterday while at the ATM withdrawing the funds for my hair cut: "Do I need this? I could put it toward something more important." Almost immediately that thought was crushed by the realization, "No! I planned for this! Why should I not get it?" It feels great to watch this video and feel like I am starting to truly understand how to think about my money, because those were the words my brain elected to express that sentiment to itself, "I planned for this."
BOOM! Love this David. Huge fan of this thinking. That's the whole point of budgeting! Getting to spend on the things that you truly want. I had the most amazing haircut and beard trim in Boise Idaho last year. I paid $50 for it, and it was an amazing experience. I would go there every month if I had one around. All about the priorities. Thanks man!
Great points. We have fun money so we can have whatever we want within that each month. Tgen we have bigger goals that take longer to save /wait for. It works for us x
3:48 haha! you are so right. setting up a budget and tracking expenses takes TIME. i watch every one of your helpful videos about 3 times before i get it. learning new things takes time but can be so rewarding emotionally and, hopefully, financially!
Thanks for this awesome content! I have slowly been working on my budget. I always feel guilty about how much money I spend on my very expensive hobby of glassblowing. But it’s my favorite thing and I just need to budget and let go of that guilt since it is something I really love and want to invest my time and money into. :)
Absolutely Shayna! Budget's are supposed to work with you and let you do more of what you want to do :) SO glad to hear that the video was helpful and encouraging for you :)
Great info as always. Looking back to when we started a budget, after scouring the internet for various tools and testing some of them out, I landed with a template for open office that I liked and still use. Don't want people to get discourage from starting one because most of your time I have found is spent on that initial setup which with the template I am using is mostly done for you. I enter the monthly take home income or other streams of revenue, interest earned on things, it has a field for all those, etc. Then the template has all the things and categories needed to track spending. Even investment contributions are on it. It auto sums/subtracts as you enter money spent and also sums what will be in savings at the end of the month, next month, year end as you go through the year. Really helps with seeing how much you will have or where you are spending your money. So for those thinking it takes a lot of effort to maintain, it doesn't. I spend 5 mins a month on the budget and tracking things. Once started, it should be easy to keep going. For instance, last night we went out to our fav pub to meet friends and when I came home I put the receipt on the desk. This morning, I entered that amount in the "beer-wine-Alcohol" section. That was our only expense that day. 3 or 4 expenses another day, tap, tap tap.. done. It takes seconds to open the form add a couple numbers, save and close. Then after years of doing it, you can go back and at a glance see trends in spending....like - me to wife- Ok honey. I can cut your hair and save a bunch by doing so... To which she just laughs histerically.. Don't know why but something is funny about me offering to cut her hair.. :) haha But really, the take away is - Control your money, don't let your money control you. Keep up the good work.
I love my budget! When I actually follow it, I reach my financial goals (currently paying off debt). But it has taken m a long time to slowly lower my budget allocations to get them down to a minimal amount that actually feels do-able!
Totally Rachael. Budgeting should be fun when you're reaching your goals :) Glad you feel like you're finally finding some balance around what feels doable. That's the whole point. Finding that line that's doable and exciting :) Thanks for watching as always!
I love your videos and your viewpoint on money and budgeting and I always look forward to the next one! Thanks for all the info and encouragement you provide.
so true!!! it's all about the mind set. great point about changing the word budget with the word plan, so many get hung up on the word budget. 900 more!!!!! by next video i bet you hit it!!!!!!
Loooove your viewpoints and mindset- as always. You have a great way of making people think about the “why” behind what they do. This is effective. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hello Nick! thank you for awesome content! Quick feedback - can you add overview of tips or thing you are talking in your video in description, in case if we missed one or want to see what the video is about.
Hi, I have a question: how do you manage not anymore needed categories? like i have a debt payment category and i payed it off. If I delete the category, past values will be off? and past charts also? or if i delete in may, before may it is still there? I dont want to see it anymore, just in the past:)
Haha I get it! I actually have a category group that I created called “categories I no longer care about” and I keep that group at the bottom. And then I drag the category I no longer need into that group. And keep it minimized. Out of site, out of mind :)
Balazs; if you're using YNAB you can right click the category and put it in "Hide". Everything you've hidden will be in a separate category at the very bottom of the budget. You can unhide it at any time and it will go right back to the category it came from. Don't delete categories or it will mess your entire budget up.
Hello Nick, I have a question I overspent 130$ last month in my budget, and somehow in this month I don’t see any “red numbers” though my credit card balance increased, I have red numbers in past month, Should I budget like for past month to disappear that red balance
Yevhenii Melnyk If you go into a new month having overbudgeted in the past month YNAB automatically subtracts last month’s missing dollars from your new To Be Budgeted.
You are so right that a budget gives you freedom and peace of mind. I cannot imagine going back to the days of worrying whether I would have enough money to meet all my needs, let alone wants.
Heard that! I totally agree with you there :) The freedom and peace of mind accounts for so so much.
Thanks for watching :)

Woot woot! So glad that it was helpful for refocusing! Definitely get that plan in place :)

Off topic question. The two pillows in the background, do they have an artists signature in the lower right-hand side? If so, who is it?
Really useful content man, thank you
