13 Things I Cut From My Budget With No Pain

  • Here's 13 things Hanna and I cut out of the budget that we don't miss at all. Listen to all of them and I think you'll be surprised at the ideas these make you think of and what things you could cut out.
The goal with spending money is to maximize your spending on the things you care the most about. That means things we only kinda sorta want should be cut out ruthlessly. After all, why would you spend money on something you only kinda want when you could spend that money on something you really want?
That's why I share these 13 things with you. I want you to think about all the ways you spend money and what matters a lot vs. what matters a little.
While you may not cut out the same things that we have, I guarantee you can think of something you currently buy that isn't worth the money.
Give it some thought, and be sure to leave a comment below telling me something that you've cut from your budget without missing at all.

I cut fake fingernails out of my budget. I purchased nail polish and paint my own for special occasions. I miss feeling like I look professional, but I feel more professional knowing my budget is better.

Same here on the cable. I originally got it to watch football then realized I was spending my Sundays indoors in front of a TV...what a waste!! Now I use my Sunday to make breakfast for my family, spend quality time with my wife and educate myself via RUclips!

This is funny because we just discovered American Eagle at the age of 36 and it's the only brand my wife will wear now. I still haven't bought myself a pair, I'm always in work clothes... 😂. But we buy clothes so infrequently it doesn't dent our budget at all, really. That definitely made me laugh tho!

This past Christmas was my first since being out of debt. I started looking and buying in the summer as things caught my eye. Doing it this way even permitted me to cash flow the whole thing. Waking up New Year’s Day still debt free and debt stress free was one of those unexpected, “champion of the world,” moments that I intend to make into tradition for years to come!

Paper towels and tissues, cut. We now use cloth napkins and cloth handkerchiefs and just wash them weekly with our wash. We also cut out store bought cleaning products. Vinegar, soda and lemon juice will do just fine, in fact, steeping lemon and orange peel in vinegar for weeks will make you nice cleaning solution for kitchen, bathroom, tiled floors, etc.

1st: cut cable back in '14; 2nd: I use a beauty college for haircuts & go when it's unmanageable (abt 18 months); 3rd: stopped coloring my hair bc I was terrible at it & I'm going for the 'silver fox' look; 4th: recently decided to not buy meat to cook in my place, which reduces money spent, frees up space in my freezer for things like ice cream 🍦😱 😛 but I will order meat while at a restaurant, so I don't have to store, cook or clean up afterwards.
Lastly, it's been a few years coming but I'm saving a lot of money by not participating in holidays. I also offer to work during holidays so another can be with their family.
I've recently found your channel & subscribed, I like what I've seen so far, keep up the good work! ☺

I cut cable and now watch RUclips TV, Philo and Netflix. We also installed an antenna for local news ( & college football). I stopped going to expensive grocery stores. They have tons of items where I would always spend lots of $$ on things I didn't need. I now shop Aldi, Dollar General and even Walmart. I buy meat at my local butcher. By the time I've piled on spices, herbs and sauces, the food still taste delicious (and isn't that the goal). Oh yeah, and since I've retired and do occasional consulting work on the side, we cut down to 1 car! I used to earn 6 figures, was stressed out beyond belief, on the consumer hamster wheel, and it took a heart attack & open heart surgery to figure out what was really important. Love your video's!

Dang! That's crazy about your heart surgery and attack. I'm glad you seem to be okay now. I love all these things that you've cut. Those are awesome! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your cuts Suzanne :) I really appreciate it.

Bummer you never got to go to Cedar Point, one of the best amusement parks in the country. I liked your idea of riding to waiting thought and you’re definitely right about spending money to wait around. However some tips if you decide to make your way over there again: Best time to go in my experience is weekday in early May. Ride times are ridiculously shorter, like 0 to 45 min for most if you time it right. They have an app where you can go to the rides with the lesser wait times and they do significantly vary. Idk if its because the park is long and skinny but when you first go, hitting the rides all the way in the back and working backwards is always a good idea! You can eat your own food in the parking lot and they have a pavilion too. I enjoy the food there and like to buy something I can bring into the line. Lastly, avoid halloweekends!! Its INSANE busy, like 2 hr waits for small rides...
Hope you reconsider, love the videos. You taught me how to ynab haha.

I recommend getting some cloth napkins! Maybe harder for you guys in the trailer, but since I bought cloth napkins (for us when eating) and a set of 20 dishtowels (for most messes) I have cut down my paper towel spending to almost none! I still have them though, for those disgusting messes. It's also much better for the environment and produces less waste. I found my napkins at goodwill and they were a steal! BEST PURCHASE EVER!

    • @kellymhanson
      @kellymhanson 3 года назад

I've done the same thing. We use no tissues, no napkins, and minimal paper towels for gross things (i.e. when the cat throws up). I didn't buy cloth napkins though; we re-purposed some old t-shirts and literally just cut them up into napkin-sized squares (napkin-sized when folded in quarters). T-shirts are great for it because they don't fray, so you don't have to finish the edges. And if you were going to toss the shirt anyway, then you're not afraid to use it/potentially stain it. It does add to the laundry, but like you said, we never have to buy napkins or tissues and it's that much less waste going to the landfills.

Coffee Pods - when setting up our YNAB budget looked back to figure out how much $ for the Coffee Pod category. Figured wouldn't be that much as I always bought on sale and the recyclable type etc. While adding it up reached $600 and hadn't even gone through the year yet, had no idea was spending so much! Needless to say purchased a fill your own reusable pod and a $10 tin of coffee which has lasted 3 months and still going!

Great tips, I do a lot of these too. Thrift shopping for clothes has been a huge blessing for our family of 5. I rarely buy new clothes anymore, except underwear and a few specific other times. So new clothes would be something we cut. I get compliments all the time on my outfits, some items cost as little as $2 at my local thrift shop, like new/with tags. It's worth the effort to root through and find those things. Spending time shopping but saving a boat load of money

Thank you for sharing so many useful tips! Cutting hair is definitely too expensive on a monthly basis. You can totally cut hair at home if you don’t look for a super fancy style. My husband and I cut each other’s hair at home. Got all the tools under $40 from Amazon and found a video that makes sense to me on RUclips. And I really enjoy watching my favorite show at home while getting my haircut. No need to tip or to socialize with the hairdresser. It’s really not that hard to learn. If you like yogurt, you can substitute it by homemade frozen yogurt. Adding frozen fruit and whip cream will make it taste better.

Doing my nails myself saves so much time and money and I don't feel guilty about buying a new polish every once in a while! Making my coffee at home not only saves me money, but also the environment plus hazelnut almond milk creamer makes it taste 10x better than any Starbucks I've had. However, my partner and I definitely struggle with our eating out habits, that's the next thing to tackle for sure!

IMO, the best family amusement park is Knoebels in Elysburg, PA. Free parking, free admission, shows. You only pay for the food you eat (you can bring your own food as well), the rides you go on, and the swimming pool with water slides if you want to swim. They also have campgrounds and picnic areas with grills you can reserve. Once or twice a summer, they have a B1G1F all day ride pass as well. It is built into a groove, so there are lots of trees, which means lots of shade. Check it out in your travels.

I recently signed up for daily burn and have been enjoying that so much more. Also on ice cream... I got a hand-me-down ice cream maker and started making my own! Things we've cut and don't miss: our big house and two acre property to a much smaller home and yard really close to my husband's job, buying most paper products, fancy cleaners, many name brand food labels, a ton of convenience foods off the grocery list, going to the movie theater, and eating out once a week. I love that with YNAB, you prioritize your spending, and your priorities don't have to be like anyone else's. For example, amusement parks are something my family loves, so every few years we save money and go to a big one. We try to save as much money as we can on the trip using tips and tricks (one time we spent 10 days in Florida - original cost $10k, our cost $2k). It's not essential, but we prioritize it because it's something our family of 6 enjoys together. We've cut other things that matter less to us and haven't missed those one bit.

playing it forward helps a lot with spending i think. if you have a goal that you really want to reach it's not hard to do without to get there. most of the things that we cut out din't bring us that much joy they were just habits or routines that we were use to doing. seeing us get to our goals is so much more rewarding than any of the spending we were doing.

    • @mappedoutmoney

Instead I'm walking and biking with Chris and friends and loving it. Same here - we'll see what happens when winter comes. I have horrible self control with ice cream too - amen! One thing we've cut from our budget that we don't miss - make up. I've been going make up free for a while. Trying to love my natural self! People are actually luckier now when it comes to "not having to dress up-" for most jobs. Back in the day, we had to wear very nice clothes to most jobs and they didn't care if you made enough to cover it. Thrift stores and frugality were laughed at (I''m talking about the greedy 80s). I've noticed now you can dress down or the company supplies you a uniform. That's a win.

I would love to just roam in an RV, perhaps when my 3 girls are out of the house. My brother slept in his car on the way from WA to IN. I was like, um? Worked for him.
Oh, theme parks, to 'save' we get the season pass, but we have a few pretty close here in PA - Dorney Park and Hershey. We did end up getting the season pass for Universal case we have family about 2 hours from there and it was 'cheaper' to get the passes and go a few times a year than a 1 time visit which just didn't make sense. We've been 3 times already so and will be down again in the summer for another visit or two.
Yes, hotels are pricey. We typically stay at Holiday Inn Express and earn rewards. My husband traveled a lot and earned tons of points so sometimes we get free stays. I didn't know that 'non-truck drivers' could pay for showers. Very interesting. I would definitely consider that if I was on my own as an option.
No cable here. Way too expensive for only 1-2 channels I actually want to watch.

    • @mappedoutmoney

RVing is a lot of fun, but you definitely have to have the right life setup! Would be much tougher if we had three kids haha. That's great about the season pases on the themepark. Would definitely make it cheaper each time if you go a lot. I like that.
And yup! Non-truckers can totally pay for showers :) We do it all the time. It's a great option. That's cool though about your husband getting a lot of points. That helps a ton.

We'd bring our own bottle of water and stop at the store on the way to grab movie-theater sized snacks that we could smuggle in rather than pay for concessions. All of a sudden a movie went from about $40 ($12/ticket x2; $7 soda; $8 popcorn) to $15 ($5/ticket x2; $0 water; $5 random snacks). Not huge savings except when you take into account that we used to see upwards of 2 movies / week at full price. Sheesh.

The longest we waited was probably 45-60 minutes for one of the rides. We ate at the Leaky Caldron and both got kids meals and shared a butterbeer, ended up being I think $20-30 instead of $40+, plus the kids meals were honestly enough to fill us up until late! If you wanted to do the whole of each park, now that's when I understand you'd want to have 2 days. We did both Harry Potter worlds, including each ride, then walked around each park and rode another 2 rides, then were gone by 4-5pm. We used Uber, so no parking fees for us there.

I am *so* with you on working out. I hatehatehate having to go someplace else to work out. (Exception: I take Kung fu classes, but to me that feels totally different than going to the gym because I'm connecting with a community and also learning new things.) I also don't buy tissues or napkins. I usually have paper towels on hand for things like drying off a piece of meat before I cook it, but it takes forever for me to use up a roll. I also use toilet paper too, of course, but otherwise I'm a good gen-X'er helping you millennials kill the wood pulp paper industries. I have to ask, though: How can you stand to blow your nose with paper towels? They're so rough! I picked up the habit from my dad of using handkerchiefs to blow my nose - much kinder and gentler on facial skin. I also have a bunch of cotton bandanas that I got from REI that I use as cloth napkins - I got that idea from a restaurant here in Seattle. (They are larger and look totally different from my handkerchiefs, so I don't get them mixed up.) I've had my handkerchiefs and bandana-napkins for *years* and they're still going strong.

      @arguchik 5 лет назад +2

P.S. Just because my dad was hilarious and I miss him, I'm going to add (and thank you for indulging me here): he used to call his handkerchiefs "schnozzledusters." LOL. In addition to his motley collection of "real" handkerchiefs, he also used to repurpose his cotton undershirts as makeshift handkerchiefs when they got too ratty for him to keep wearing. He was raised during the Great Depression, and grew up very poor, so he was full of ideas about how to stretch a dollar by just not spending it. (I should have paid more heed to his wisdom when I was a young adult!)

@@arguchik Totally agree on the gym and the classes. I actually used to take Kung fu classes when we lived in Chattanooga. Now that we're on the road, I don't obviously, but someday when we settle down I want to get back to taking a martial arts class. Glad to hear that you do that and enjoy it! I think its great to learn and like you said, join a community. As for paper towels, yeah, IDK. I just do it lol. Been doing it for so long that I don't notice the "roughness" i guess. But I like what your dad said about the Handkerchiefs! I really appreciate you sharing that. Its really cool. I think we could all stand to listen to our parents a little more when we're young adults, I know I should have (still should!) haha. Its amazing how far people can stretch a dollar when they need it and how flippant we often are today with them.

I’m pretty late to comment on this video… But I’m going to cut out disposable coffee cups and lids.
I am also a big fan of Diet Coke. But I know I should be drinking more water. So goodbye Diet Coke for now.
    $30-40/mo savings.

Thomas Hammond this is great. I think it’s really common for us all to spend money on daily drinks here and there that we’d be better dropping.
Love this Thomas. No reason to buy disposable when you can wash and reuse.
      Thanks for watching!

I have cut cable TV for last 10 years. I get my news from internet free without the drama and entertainment from Netflix/RUclips
