Man the shot at 6:00 is lovely! Would def love to see a video on how you expose in those dynamic lighting situations on film.
Thank you, man! With situations like this, if I'm using the internal meter in the camera I'm using (always lol) I'll find any kind of "spot" in my scene that has relatively consistent light values on it and read the light off of that as if it were a gray card. It's never actually a gray card so I kinda have to imagine how much darker or lighter that area is than a middle gray, essentially as if I were using the zone system. Like this shot here, I know I got in close with my M6 and metered off of Elliott's skin, which is obviously much brighter than middle gray. So I took my reading and then compensated by overexposing a couple of stops so that my highlights were actually highlights and not being exposed as middle gray.
I really hope this makes sense. Haha. I should probably do a video on something like this!
@@mattdayphoto Gotcha thanks! It does haha just gotta read through it a few times. I usually meter with a grey card in most situations.
This picture is beautiful!
@@mattdayphoto I do the same. It's wicked fast lazy zone. It works. :D
Got to admit I smiled all the way through this vid. Seeing you enjoy the discovery of your own photos was beautiful and sums up what makes film photography so much better than digital.
Happy to hear this! ❤️
Hey Matt,
Great video! I just love the kind of photos you make. If you go through social media, alot of times it's all about making flashy photos that get the most attention. But in the end they are just empty. Making photos of loved ones, and making GREAT photos of loved ones. That is just the best way of using photography.
I appreciate that! You said it best. If I'm making pictures that mean a lot to me and to the people in them, that's all I can hope for!
Matt, the way you shoot your family is unbelievable to me. You're able to capture special moments, but compose them so effortlessly-it's honestly mind-blowing to witness. My baby girl is just 10 months old right now, but I hope I eventually can make images like these when she grows up. Thanks for this video, and can't wait to see what's in your backlog! This was such a good idea.
Seeing the pure love and joy on your face as you go through those moments you capture is incredibly heartwarming. I can only hope to have a family and be a rad dad like you someday.
Doesn't get any better than this.
This felt like an old school Matt Day video 👌🏻
I love these videos! Having followed you for years it is cool to see where the kids are now. Elliot looks like a small man - when I first started watching your videos he was just a tiny boy!!
I look forward to more videos of this kind 😊
You have no idea how much that means to hear. The last 6 months or so have felt like I've found me again after a few years of things not going so well. It's a process.
Appreciate you being here. ❤️
Lovely shots Matt! Beautiful video and beautiful memories.
Man this video made me wanna pick up my camera again after a few years of hiatus. It reminded me again how fun it is to documment my daily life. Thanks man!
It's amazing, I've never watched one of your videos or seen your work but I really enjoyed this view into your personal life and hearing you talk about your family
That picture of Eliot at kin 6.40 looks awesome, I also liked it a lot. Just how the light is hitting him and combined it with the shadows it creates a very pleasant image.
beautiful photos beautiful video. I've been thinking of the importance of having a family lately, this speaks to me
Thank you so much!
love this video. I understand exactly how you feel when seeing the photos of our loved ones while editing. It's this revealing process that really touches us and to know that we have these photos recorded. They are so precious.
Truly! Although so far in my developing of this backlog, I'm wondering if my eyes are getting worse because focusing seems to be quite the issue these days 🤣
@@mattdayphoto I don't see any focusing issue with the images, they are quite sharp! You are so humble :D If I may try to help, the problem is not whether you nailed the focus because you did nail it. The problem probably is releasing your right hand too fast after you pressed the shutter. I had this episode using the Leica and wondered why my shots wear slightly blurry even if the shutter speed is high enough for handheld (my usual shutter speeds). We sometimes get comfortable with the camera that we forgot the basic of holding that breath when pressing the shutter. :D I might be wrong but I am sure your focus is perfect Matt. and whether its sharp or not I think your photos are still amazing!
I love when you do videos like this Matt. I’ve said it before but it gives me the vibe of a proud dad back in the day pulling out his slides to show the fam. We have a little girl on the way and I can not wait to do this. Thanks for the inspiration
Thank you so much! best of luck with your little girl! ❤️
The Leica is delivering some fine quality - did not expect that
Watching you react to these scans might be the most wholesome video on RUclips.
Haha! Thank you. 🤝
Your family photos are inspiring!
Delta is my GoTo film for professional work. It holds up well if you print in the darkroom. A 2.5 to 3 grade print covers most situations, where some do need split tone printing.
I really enjoy your videos, Matt. I've been working on some new projects outside of family photography, but honestly I think just documenting the people around me is and will be enough to keep me going. It's always great seeing someone on RUclips show how meaningful and important those sorts of photographs can be.
I appreciate that, Sam! I have lots of ideas and goals for different projects that I can work on throughout the rest of my life, but these will always be the ones that matter the most to me. ❤️
Great, this is where you really shine... just the banal, sometimes boring but always intimate every day life documented on bnw 35mm! Love it!
This is such a great vid Matt, seeing your reaction when you initially saw the images is a beautiful and relatable thing. Definitely keen to see more like this, keep it up :)
I appreciate you! Had a lot of fun with this, more on the way. ❤️
Great video! I really enjoyed the “first impressions” format and hope you do more. It was nice to see your genuine reactions and emotions in response to the photos. Keep it up!
...got time for Matt Day all day. Never really considered digitisation as an option but you have got me thinking again. Outstanding work, man - that 6:00 business is as real as it gets. Chapeau.
Man I feel like a broken record but I freakin love the intros. Instant hook and great vibes
The way you’re letting each frame just breathe is super refreshing.
These videos get me excited for the long distant day that I become a Dad lol, Love your work, love your videos keep it up.
Thank you!
I really feel taken back into my time as a student when I shot a lot of film and developed it myself. Thanks for bringing back those sweet memories! ❤ BTW did you ever do any densitometry of your processing? Maybe its the scanning but the results to me look as if the they would profit from an increase in exposure and a decrease in development: More detail in the shaddows, less blocked highlights. Negatives which look "good" are usually overdeveloped. They have to look soft and greyish to be perfect. Learned it the hard way...
Lovely shots! Love seeing the expressions on your face as you see the photos come to life.
I've shot with Delta 100. I have not tried the 400. I can say the 100 is excellent. The results have blown me away.
I shot some Delta 100 in 4x5 but I don't think I've ever shot it on any roll format before. Might have to give that a try this summer.
It was awesome to see you react to your pictures :) thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching!
Hi Matt. You look a lot better these days. And your videos seem to be laced with enthusiasm and joy. Almost like a resurgence. After watching your videos for some time and admiring your Leica M6, I finally managed to get 2 Leicas: a M3 and a MA. The M3 was a beat up and scratched version but the viewfinder and the internals seems almost new. Thank you for all that you do.
I love this style of video. I could watch it all day long!
A beautiful and warm video. Feels like a healing session. I loved it.
That’s a really beautiful thing to say, I appreciate that so much. Past couple of weeks have been mentally tough, tried to film a video for 2 days and just couldn’t do it. First time I’ve ever experienced it that bad. I was thinking today that maybe doing another one of these episodes instead of the video I had planned, it could feel therapeutic in a way. This comment was what I needed, thank you. ❤️🤝
More of this please! So fun to watch you light up looking back at these memories.
More on the way! Thank you!
This was the most enjoyable video. Thank you
Thanks so much, man!
Fantastic photos. Thanks for sharing these memories.
Great video! I really enjoyed it. You have inspired me to develop and scan film.
Thank you! I’ve got some old videos here on the channel going over the process, I’ll be sharing more soon. ❤️
Let’s gooo. He’s back babyyyyy
how the hell is it almost May 😅
Enjoyed seeing your photos as well as learning a thing or two about scanning and tweaking during your image post production.!
That was the goal, so I'm glad to hear it! ❤️
Beautiful and fun video Matt !
Thank you!
Strawberry snapper for sure
got that POP
Love delta 400 for portraits ❤
I'm thinking that's gonna be next when I get some in. 🤝
really liked the video MD. lovely photos
thank you!
thank you for sharing - love this kind of vids
Wonderful watching your kids grow up. As far as film, Delta is my go to series in B&W and I wish they’d have a 50 ISO version as an alternative to Pan F.
Thanks Matt
Thank you for watching!
What a wholesome video!! Refreshing
Thank you!
Matt this is superb. LOVE the unfiltered reactions!
Thank you, Ben! Had fun with this one.
really liked this kind of video, would be cool to see more of this, and also great photos as usual 👌🏻👌🏻
loved this one Matt! seeing your immediate reaction to photos is a joy!
You should totally do more vids like this. Made me super happy to watch!
Love to hear that. More on the way, appreciate you watching!
Love these videos, Family is everything.
100%
And thank you!
Super cool vid - nice to chill and watch the process. I need to get to it soon too! and....
Oh man! It's wicked seeing the Delta exploration train must be 6 or 7 years ago you were always going off about HP5 and I'd never shot it (mostly Kodak for years n years when I did shoot B&W) so after you going on I tried some. Really liked it, but never loved it, but since I'd been buying Ilford and shot Delta 100 a number of times I tried Delta 400 and pushed it a stop on a few rolls, just like this. A month later I bought a can of it! It's been my regular ever since.
You have to a be a little nicer to Delta400 - it'll crush the black quicker when pushed, but +1 in XTOL is my very favorite everyday B&W look. The sharpness and but still with a bit of that HP5 grit (when pushed), but tones for daaaaaaays. Love Delta. Cheers
Good looking out! I might have to try pushing some Delta soon, that sounds great.
That feeling when a new Matt Day video appears in your feed but you’re at work and your lunch break is still more than 2 hours away… 😬
Haha, I hope it's worth the wait!
Ended up having to wait until the end of the day 😬 Well worth the wait though! Love the day-to-day family life photos.
6:11 yeah ❤
Loved this dude, I recently have been shooting primarily delta 400 on 35 and 120. Love the less contrasty and greyer tones!
It's really nice! Now I'm curious how I'll feel when I develop the other 35mm I have here because it's all HP5. Ya never know!
Love these videos, Matt! Would love to see the rest of your rolls like this.
Thanks, man! More on the way!
More of this. Please.
Its amazing how timeless these pictures look. Even if you're saying that these were just scanned as snapshots. Man... I'd love to get results like these :)
Thank you for sharing and all the best from Berlin/Germany
Thank you! I appreciate that. Plenty of duds in every roll, but if I get one or two photos to be happy with each time I sit down to scan, I'm happy. ❤️
Loved it but what a task you have set yourself Matt. :) Molly looks fab and a little hint of young Suzi Quatro at around the 9.25 part.
I'm shooting Delta 100 120 at the moment and have some ready to develop but haven't had time. I think I am gonna like it.
Stay happy.
She does! Good call.
Appreciate the support, hope you've been well, Morris. 🤝❤️
That was fun. Some great photos there.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing Matt. Love these images, keep working on that backlog. Hope you're well.
Thank you, Bill! 15 rolls developed yesterday, we're getting there!
I’m in the process of a move from Colorado back to Texas and have a dozen or so rolls to catch up on. Can’t wait to see what I forgot I took pictures of
I'm 20 rolls in so far. It's been great, comforting, frustrating, all of the things I remembered. Haha
Interested to see the coming video on your scanning set up. I have a converted Minolta enlarger which is great and Negative Supply Film carrier mk1 and 5x7 light source pro 95. Have had some issues with negatives not being held perfectly flat and as I scroll the negatives through shifts more to one side as too much play in the guides inside plus light is not quite as bright as I thought it would be. Using Sony A7r3 and Canon ef 100mm f2.8 macro. Enjoyed your delightful photos.
Great video Matt! Your candid family photography is really inspirational!
I would love to get your take Lee Friedlander's book:
"Family in the picture"
Take care
Thank you! I have a couple of Friedlander books but not that one! I'll have a look and see if I can track a copy down!
hi yes please don't stop
making these videos and don't stop making photographs.
NEVER! Appreciate you. 🤝
I have been wanting to get back into shooting from taking an unplanned hiatus. I have been wondering if the investment would be worth it and this video really reminded me why I love film shooting. If the finances work out I will be picking up some film again. This video made me miss it so much. Thanks Matt, I loved this first impressions video.
im glad you came back ♥ im waiting for a video about developing and scaning ;-)
Thank you!
hell yea, good ol hp5. I miss mixing up the chems in my amber bottles. price of film and other life changes, sold my scanner and most of my developing gear.
this was Delta! Haha. but I can't blame ya there. It's definitely not getting any cheaper...
Wish I could like this video more than once.
I appreciate you! Glad you enjoyed it. 🤝
So much fun
don’t know how you wait so long on photos that good lol. loved them all
Haha, thank you, brother!
Great video!
Really nice process! Love these videos.
Do you scan with cameras or scanners? Which resolution?
I always reach for my FE2 after your videos. In the 80’s and 90’s shot mostly Kodak but love HP5. Off to shoot a roll now! I have two small boys and have so many images of them but not on film. Need to work on that! Thank you 🙏
I love to hear this! Have a good time and remember to get in some of the pictures yourself. 🤝
Such a great video Matt!
Thank you! More on the way!
awesome shots man, film feels so damn authentic and vibrant, even if its totaly inferior in a technical way
Thank you!
This is a lovely video, and makes me think I need to give delta 400 another try (I think my last experience was hurt by a bad thermometer I was using for developing, so my dev temps were likely incorrect).
Sometimes it's worth giving it another go! I've been turned off by film stocks before based off of poor lab scans or issues with my own developing.
Makes me want to have a family of my own. :)
I guess the next films I'll develop are gonna be that fun to discover (the first pictures of my niece).
It's the best!
Do you still have your old computer ?.. than go to your plugin manager and you find the serial under preferences for your NLP-plugin…
great video Matt!
Thank you!
Love this style of video.
Working on it, brother 🙏
Love the photos, beautiful family, great video…but I totally disagree with your crops. You frame really well in/camera so why not just go with it?😊
You're a very lucky man Matt
the luckiest.
Loved watching this Matt. I wasn't paying 100% attention in a couple of bits as my own kids were in and out during it and I let it keep playing so I may have missed it but could you talk a little about how you exposed the delta 400? Were you setting ISO at box speed? Over exposing a little? Pushing etc?
Haha, I get that. I find myself rewinding or rewatching things all of the time. I exposed everything at box speed, just tried to get a good neutral exposure unless compensating for backlit situations, high key scenarios, etc.
@@mattdayphoto thanks - that was my guess. I've just switched out a M9P to a MP so finding my way back into film. Have some Delta 400 ready to go so excited to see the type of shots you took as most of mine will be family stuff too.
Hey Matt, sorry if you mentioned it in the video but did you expose it at box speed or did you push?
This is awesome
Thank you!
I don’t think you’d be getting a proper conversion by hand. Even if you do manual adjustments. But I’m not entirely azure.
I'm surprised you don't analog print on an enlarger.
Great video! What happened to the SL2?
After I stopped shooting weddings and portrait work for hire, I decided to sell my equipment that I bought for that work specifically. Love the system, just too. much money in gear to be sitting there unused and not making any income like they once were.
Amen 🤘🏻
Thanks for watching!
So early to this vid. Love these kind of videos though.
Thank you!
Love this, dude. These images are awesome and so inspiring. Quick question, did you shoot the delta at box speed? Or did you push it like your hp5?
Thank you! All shot at box speed.
Thanks for this great video Matt! Would you say you prefer converting your bnw negatives using negativelabpro or do you like the manual (lightroom) way? All the best, Chris
Thanks man! To be honest, it's been a long time since I've used NLP, I've heard it's been updated since I last used it and it's been even more improved, but I don't know that personally. I kinda like the manual inversion because I see every step and know exactly what changes are being made. But maybe there's another advantage to NLP that I'm just not aware of or don't remember? All I can say is for color, I would never do it manually. NLP is a must for me when it comes to scanning color. But black and white? I can work with that.
@@mattdayphoto Thanks Matt!
Copy that, I'm impressed something's at 200 on your list. I feel less alone 😅
The list never ends, it only gets bigger.
Long time no see.
Thanks for watching!
