A fun fact about this song, when Shoji Meguro brought Lotus in to record the lyrics for this song he read them and said "Nah man this is wack, this beat goes hard though" and proceeded to freestyle the first verse completely. When they decided to make FES, they just had him write the second verse instead of someone else

Reasons why this one is particularly popular are
    1) It's kind of an old meme, so it managed to be discovered by more people than usual Persona fanbase.
    2) It's the ONLY standart battle theme in P3. Bosses have their own ones but whenever you're in the main dungeon Tartarus, this song is the only song you hear in battles. Tartarus have 264 floors.
3)Extremely basic and catchy chorus. You can't go wrong with no context BABYBABYBABYBABY

So when it comes to story, SMT is infamous for being very dark and super serious, the Persona games however are slightly less depressing...within contex cuz bad things happen in all games, Persona 1, 2 and 3 in particular, but even if the series started going in a "Brighter" mood from P3 on, even P4, arguably the most cheerful and positive Persona game ever, is still a Murder Mystery with named characters dying.

    1. Like you said the song is very well made, its catchy, its fun, its an enjoyable experience all around

    4. Memes, this song got very popular for awhile due to the BABY BABY BABY BABY part at the beginning

Deep Breath (the version one from the train mission) and Changing of the Seasons are my favorites from 3, I love all of the Persona soundtracks but I always appreciated how P3 embraced an unapologetically weird niche fusion of trip hop, hip hop, pop, and house that can sometimes feel like a more poppy prototype of 2010's era industrial/abstract hip hop at times. P3's music always kind-of felt to me like it was a big risk with the general crowd of Persona fans and I'm happy they took it because it's very nice to have the one that appeals most to my more core tastes to point to when persona music comes up.

Hell yeah, time for BABYBABYBABY to blast through. As cheesy as it is in a lot of ways, it's still probably my favorite normal battle theme in the series. I never got tired of it, just this hip hop beat coming through while desperately fighting to the top of Tartarus. Good stuff.
Also, maybe it's not the right place to ask, but has there been any consideration to maybe listening to more tracks from Undertale or Deltarune? Hell, maybe even playing them? They're relatively short indie RPGs with absolutely phenomenal music. Gameplay, characters, and story aren't a slouch either. They're popular for a reason, though some of the songs Toby Fox has put together, like Hopes and Dreams, A Cyber World, Field of Hopes and Dreams, the track literally titled Undertale, and, of course, Megalovania, all of them just take the games from good to amazing. Really would love to see you delve into those games, either through a music reaction or actually playing them. God, watching you play them would be a blast, to see your reactions to the music in the moments they play.
Either way, always happy to see more Persona on here.

Persona 3 came out at a time when the landscape of gaming was changing pretty dramatically. Then next-gen consoles were coming out and boasting huge production values and pretty insane visuals. It felt like a lot of older styled games were going to be left behind in this new era. Then Atlus released a turn-based JRPG on what was considered a dead platform, and people who went out and played it instantly fell in love. It had an unmatched art style, incredible music, and a style of gameplay that felt familiar, but new. Mass Destruction is the centerpiece when people mention the music mainly because it stands out so much as it's the main battle theme, but also because as others have mentioned it's been memed into relevance over the years along with "Specialist" from Persona 4.

I used to do the same thing. I had a demo CD for pc games that had a few great tracks (I think it was Chaos Overlords and Muzzle Velocity.) I also had a Top Gun: Hornet's Nest cd that I would listen to in the car. The game was okay but the rock was unparalleled.
I don't know the answer to your question but I'll say this. The Persona 3 soundtrack makes you feel cool, like one of those cool kids I'm sure you've heard about. I love how some games take an unexpected music format and set a battle to it (Mrs. Krista Yoslav/Assault Horizon much?) and this game is no exception. You're grooving into battle feeling all cool with your gang rather than... something else. Like, let's say, the "meat grinder" mentality of Doom or some epic orchestral thing. This is good too, but very different in that it doesn't really get you hyped up to take down this boss (at least not me). Maybe you feel like dancing with it instead. Speaking of which... you haven't done Deja Vu/Mrs. Krista Yoslav from Ace Combat: Assault Horizon yet, have you?

    I've waiting for this!
It's super iconic, i mean, the people who now persona for persona 3 it makes special because is "the first" to change the formula, it's a fabulous game, with fabulous music, and with so many memes
"BABYBABYBABABYBABY" it is the most popular, maybe is because that
    Good song+meme

100% agree with your feeling that Persona 3 has the most standout, iconic/memorable music. I'm biased since P3 is also my favourite of the Persona series, but while I love the music of all of the other Persona games very very much... P3 just has the highest highs for me, both musically, character-wise and with story beats.
As for the gameplay, I'll just say this - Persona 3 was the game that convinced me I could like turn-based combat. Before, I much more favoured and enjoyed real-time combat games. But SMT and Persona have enough complexity in the demons/personas, fusion, skills, the challenge of battle, elemental affinitys, buffs/debuffs, etc etc etc that I didn't feel bored like I had with other turn-based JRPGs I'd tried. Now I'd call SMT and its various extensions (some of which do branch out into other gameplay styles) my favourite series, and P3 remains one of my top three all-time games.

The difference between these two versions is the lyrics in the rap... FES is almost an entirely new song except the chorus section. Hell, even the title Mass Destruction is not there anymore.
Persona has sad songs (some of them I like more than the happy ones) or songs that make you uncomfortable on purpose (like the one you obviously disliked, made to simulate a panic attack) but those are not the first ones people remember.
About the gameplay, they are as special and mixed as their VGM xD
Combat is a turn based rpg like OG FF7, but outside of it you have the schedule management genre, because you need to do a lot of things with the time you have, a full school year:
-You need to get good grades as a student or is game over
-You need to grind exp in combat to be able to win the battles
-You need to spend time building relationships with people around you, with the chance of romance :P
And kind of visual novel genre with all the stuff you have to read. Stuff that you will remember and will move you, but still a lot to read xD
I joke about how one of my best friends got into Persona thanks to me and loves the games, but what if we fight horribly and stop being friends? It would be a horrible thing to be linked to, because maybe he won't be able to enjoy the games the same way any more by association.

It's alright. Being a secondary is not that bad. That bad. The song is popular because we played the game. Being the battle theme we listen to it quite often. The thing about video games is that both gameplay and music play along together. Experiencing one without the other is just having half of your meal. It might be why you didn't like that previous song. It plays along the mood of the scene and the gameplay.

Ah yes, mass destruction; we are finally here.
While Burn my Dread was the first thing that jumped out to me as, huh this is great, this game has likely got more great music.
However, while Burn my Dread is good, Mass destruction was the one i will consider my favourite from P3 - It could be because i love music that can keep repeating indefinitely, but that is hard to say for certain - You do hear it a LOT since it is the main battle theme, so it could get old for some people during gameplay, but somehow i have never really heard bad things said about it.

    "It's almost barely a remix"
Honestly, it's the subtleties of it that make the FES version so fun, so I don't blame the Dancing game for just combining the two for a verse 1 and 2 medley.

Fun fact, the protagonist in the original Persona 3 (middle human character in the first video's picture) wears headphones a lot of the time. It's pretty much accepted to be canon that he's listening to Mass Destruction during battles! He's got pretty great taste in music, if the game's OST is anything to go off of lol

So yeah, this battle theme blew expectations... And so did the fact that you'll hear it a lot due to the Tartatus size, normal monsters with instakills, party members guided by AI (fixed on Persona 3 Portable), and game over trigger if the protagonist dies. Still catchy tho.
And as someone pointed out, P3 FES version is like P3 FES itself. Almost true to the original, but instead making the role of a sequel.
