I also just want to note that the way Persona music is mixed these days very much appeals to me, as a bassist, because they tend to make it so much more prominent than, say, if we compare with tracks of the Persona 3 era. Yes, they use synthetic bass but my point stands.
Really gives the tracks more body, groove and character IMO.

Bass is arguably my favorite part of Persona tracks, I've commented on that I think on just about every song I've heard. Love that it's heard clearly and carrying the song rhythmically.

I'm guessing it has a lot to do with how much better compression is these days, too. Lossy compression kills bass first and there are not many restrictions when it comes to sound nowadays.

I remember seeing something about how the audio quality of Persona 3's soundtrack was an intentional thing to match the audio quality of the protagonists ATH-E7M earphones which is a nice little detail if it's true but I can't even recall where I saw it. I like to think it is though because I can't see any real technical reason for it considering how Atlus managed to get really good audio quality on the Digital Devil Saga games after Nocturne was absolutely cursed with awful music quality.

Fun fact. "it is going down now" was originally revealed just for a few seconds in the original trailer and recorded from a phone, live. From those few seconds, people friggin loved the vibe but atlus wouldn't release more seconds, much less a full version of the song for MONTHS AND MONTHS. So the fandom, as crazy as they (we?) are, began cleaning that version up. Whenever atlus released a new trailer with a few (and I mean FEW, 2 or 3 new seconds), people would add those seconds and clean up the voiceovers from the trailers and they would post a new "It is going down cleaner version *date*". New trailer, new "cleanest version yet", and so on until Lotus Juice posted the full song himself. It was hilarious.

The new singer is Azumi Takahashi, and this game is her Persona debut. All of the original P3 soundtrack was remastered and rerecorded with her vocals for this game as well. And yes, that is Lotus Juice, both rapping and singing for the first time!
As for P3 fans, almost everyone I've seen loves these new songs. People are more mixed on the remade versions of the old OST (surprise surprise), but the new songs all seem to be popular.
Full Moon Full Life is the new opening song for the game, and It's Going Down Now is the new battle theme.
Also, these are not Shoji Meguro, these are Atsushi Kitajoh, who has mostly taken over for Meguro and worked on the spinoff games.

Burn my Dread - Full Moon Full Life (both are intro themes)

As other's have said New Moon, New Life is the new opening song and really Atlus was cooking when they made it. It's like a companion to Burn My Dead. It's going over three themes of the game (both lyrically and musically) but from a slightly different point of view.
The same is true of It's Going Down Now to Mass Destruction. It's Going Down Now actually is one of two regular battle themes which plays when you get advantage when entering battle with a new recording of Mass Destruction playing when you don't. It's a nice touch that euros perfectly.

Gamedev here! About "remake" and "remaster", they do mean different things.
A "remaster" is specifically when a completed game is taken, improved, and re-released. Starting from the same engine, game code, and the likes. Similar to how mastering and remastering is in music.
A "remake" is when a studio rebuilds a game from the ground up. Generally, they follow the same beats and stories, but are rebuilt from scratch. They often have new VAs, music, sfx, game engines, code, etc.
A "re-imagining" is when a studio does a remake but does not feel tied down to the original design and strays far. A good example would be the Rachet and Clank game for the PS4 or what FF7 seems to be doing with their new trilogy.
Of course, these terms are often used interchangeably by fans and sometimes devs, so their hard distinctions are blurred at times. But generally, that's what makes each one unique. Hope that helps!

I'm so glad they went with the direction they did when remaking this classic, all the new quality of life stuff is so nice and the music brings me right back to high school, when I first stumbled into persona for the first time. I'm just happy that a whole lot more people will get to experience this game and the message it's writers and directors tried so hard to convey, that my teenage self really needed to hear at a time when it felt like the world was collapsing in all around me. Thank you Jesse for giving us the opportunity to experience your reaction to these new track, they really are like a time machine but also modern in some weird way.

  • @vindex7309
    @vindex7309 8 месяцев назад +1

As a Persona fan, the first song has the DNA of P3 but it’s a massive shift with elements gained from P5’s success. The use of string flairs is an addition that really elevates the experience. Lotus Juice is just being Lotus Juice which will always capture the essence of what P3 was (at least to me). I mean, Mass Destruction was my favorite song only elevated with the release of FES and climaxing in the P3 movie. I especially love the callback to the original P3’s opening of Burn My Dread at the end. I hear some of the electronic elements that defined P3’s early music, but I love how it has been modernized for the audience. After all, the point isn’t a perfect recreation. It’s about building on the story that has already been told, and let me tell you - this music elevates this to Tartarus levels.
I wouldn’t say the music is “seamless”, as I mentioned, the music has 100% evolved with influence of P5’s style. If anything, it’s even better than before. Listening to P3’s original soundtrack, I noticed the quality was lower (to be expected with technological constraints), but beyond that uses its toolbox better. The call and response of the singer and Lotus Juice in the first song, the transition from rap to singing to rap to the rapper singing in the second. They just did a much better job utilizing their tools to make something amazing. I can’t overstate how good this music is. I might be a bit biased having seen its evolution and being a Persona fanboy (especially with this game in particular).

I feel like these songs are a perfect combination of the original soundtrack and the new more groovy feel and sound that came from Persona 5. It’s got a lot of bits from original Persona 3 music. It’s good stuff

Hello, new viewer here. I am a long time big persona fan, ever since persona 4, this franchise has been my favorite of all time almost solely because of the music. (Not to say the games arent enjoyable)
A lot of persona fans reactions to the new singer was mixed to say the least. Personally i think that Azumi did a fantastic job, especially so in the new additions to this revamped soundtrack. Ive already logged 20 hours in the game and not a single moment of it has my foot stopped bouncing from the music, they do fantastic work over at ATLUS.
    That’s my 2 cents.

Love the song. Not many seem to appreciate it as much as the original OP especially because the female Persona singer has changed, but I'm already used to the new singer. I already have P3 for PS2 but I'll get this one in a couple months when I can just relax and play.

In the opening movie, at the start it gives some hints of the song that you can hear motifs in Full Moon. In my opinion the mos recognizable is Burn My Dread, if I not remember wrong it was the title song from the original version.

Hey new viewer here! Its Lotus Singing in the 2nd song when you seemed unsure. I love that part It has a vibe that really reminds me of like late 90s Krazie Bone for Bone Thugs. Specifically his song Shackled Up. Also Yeah Lotus did record his vocals for this new songs. I am not sure if he was just remixed or if he was rerecorded the OG songs.

A few days into Persona 3 Reload, and I have to say it's fantastic all around. The new songs and re-recorded ones are all good. While Shoji does have his own independent studio now, he usually consults on all the music involved. Lotus Juice has been involved on the composition side as well, as far as I know, with Persona 3-5 as well. It's kind of amazing how much Shoji and Lotus' DNA and style is encoded into all the music in the games.
I have to say - they did a great job making this fit with the style from the 2006 game. Not bad for a total remake of the game (from the ground up). If you ever do decide to play the Persona games, this one is a perfect starting point.

God, Reload's soundtrack is so good, I've had it on repeat pretty much since they started teasing it. So happy that the full versions are finally out.
The whole thing is such a love letter to the originals, so many different call backs and little motifs being brought in and expanded upon. Burn My Dread is referenced a lot, the dorm theme is in there, even a lyrical mention of Way of Life... I'm sure there's more too, I swear there's stuff that sounds super familiar but I just can't quite pinpoint where else I've heard it. Plus with what it's referencing in regards to the actual story of the game, it made me kinda emotional! In a lot of ways it reminds me of the feeling I had when I first heard the Persona 3 Dancing opening, but even better because it's significantly more direct to the original sound while dancing was very much a poppier/electronic spin off track. Fresh but familiar, seamless is a very good way to put it because it manages to be both new feeling yet very nostalgic with how well it plays with the original game's sound.
This time it actually wasn't Meguro, or at least not most of it, he's gone off to freelance (although his first freelance project is still with Atlus, Metaphor Refantazio. It's got a whole like orchestra, religious based sound with Buddhist sutras, I'm sure it'll sound wild when it comes out). The composer is Atsushi Kitajoh who's worked on a lot of the Persona songs especially in the spinoffs. I think you've done videos of some of his stuff like Break Out from P4 Arena and maybe one of the dancing remixes? He has a lot of good stuff in his catalog for the series. My favourite is maybe Road Less Taken from Persona Q2, I think it's the only song with all three of the main Persona vocalists and Lotus together (outside of the live concerts).
The singer is new, Azumi Takahashi, and if there's one little gripe I have with the new soundtrack it'd be that they didn't incorporate the original singer, Yumi Kawamura, in some way. I know she's getting up there in age and a lot of people were speculating that they chose not to bring her back because her range is more limited now, but still, she's so iconic to the legacy of the originals that I think at least a little cameo would've been warranted.
And Lotus Juice singing is pretty fun lol. Colour Your Night also has a bit more of that and it also surprised me (in a good way!) the first time I heard it.

Lotus Juice is a Persona fan on his own (there's been a few cute posts on his Twitter about it, for example) so he probably immediately jumped on the chance as soon as he caught wind of Reload's existence. I wouldn't be surprised if he was part of the insiders who were asking for Persona 3 to be remade.

I've been playing this game, and even with the new music and visuals and even gameplay it feels like I'm playing the original. Like they've gone to extreme great lengths to make it feel like the original thematically. Listening to the music is like listening to a track straight out of 2006, I mean it sounds different of course, but it's got that same vibe.

I absolutely love the new tracks P3R added and Full Moon, Full life is my second favorite opening song for the franchise. I still like You are Stronger from Strikers a bit more, but this one is an easy 2nd place and a VERY close second. Also the "cleaning" arc the persona fandom went through for It's going down now was absolutely hilarious and I loved every time we went crazy because it got a bit cleaner.
