Great vid Spi . Never realised those "home made firelighters" burned so well for so long and were as easy to light . Definitely gonna try that pal . Last thing ya need when ya pi$$ wet through in a survival situation is to be trying to work your frozen digits to strike the lighter 5 , 7 or 10 times with the factory made fire lighters . TBH I think the wax and PJ mix lit so easily off the first strike of the ferro rod , it fooled you into thinking it lit off the wax one .
    Much love for doggo 👍🐕😍😍😍😎

Thank you buddy, I carry them in my fire kit since Feb this year, they are great but had no idea they burnt as long as store bought ones, was an interesting experiment to do on video.. I think this video will be one that grows over time

I've tried using some via a toilet roll and used kitchen oil. I'll see how well it works. It's bloody cheap and a decent use of old oil tbf too

Stick your knife in the top of the cube turn in circles a few times and light the shavings. You can also shave some off the sides and light.

home made fire starters are ... surprisingly common.
I am a huge fan of the Wax infusion method.
Wax and cotton (my preferred method)
    Wax and Sawdust (second)
The one that I settled on is a wax infusion of Dental cotton (The fire plug), because it is compact, water tight, can be easily fluffed up for easier ignition, offers 5 minutes of flame, and is simple to Make and use. I am working on the blend but my research says 2:1 of Wax and an oil should be right.
I am still using my first batch of my failed blend because it meets my 5 minutes of fire requirement (My batches are 50. I got a box of 250 dental cotton plugs for around $10).

I made a video of the wax sawdust bit failed miserably so never published it.
The dental cotton is very interesting, I've never heard of that - is that available at the pharmacy or supermarkets?

I have only been able to find the Dental cotton online, the use is not as mainstream as other medical supplies. I am pretty sure Amazon has dental cotton for sale. I suggest searching around because there are a lot of offerings and you should be able to find something that fits your requirements. My quick search came up with a pack of 200 for less than £7 (I think that is the right currency).
I tried my hand at Sawdust and wood tender. I liked my results but due to the hassle I decided that if I needed more I would buy them.

Have you ever tried this using cooking shortening? I have some because I was trying "extended burn candles". One guy took a "mason" type jar, put in the shortening, and stuck a candle down the middle. It burned for over 4 straight days, and then went out early, because the wick fell over!

I’ve just developed an idea in my head of how to drastically improve this! Instead of cotton balls, just start keeping the lint produced by your clothes dryer. Fill a freezer bag with it so it’s full like a pillow. Dampen it, seal the bag, and place a heavy plate or brick on it after squeezing the air out. It will dry compressed and compacted. Once dry, break off small chunks and dip in the wax/pj solution as you did with the cotton balls. These should burn much better and longer. You’re welcome 😉
