When I started, I was wise enough (read lucky) to do a 5x7" painting every day. It was quick and helped me learn technique quickly. Now, I paint a 12x16 daily and after a while, may progress to larger pieces.

I love the idea of taping off the paper and doing several separate pieces on it. What fun!

Pealing off the tape is so satisfying!

I've been painting watercolor bookmarks every day. Three scenes on three 6" x 2" pieces of paper. The best part is that you end up with something useful and/or a gift. (People really like them) as well as lots of practice.

Thank You!!! 💖 This means I can get 4 for the price of one sheet of paper, too. And I can cut them apart and send them as cards! Win Win Win 💗💝

I’ve started an exercise like yours today Matthew, not plein air but from some photos just to give me confidence by doing smaller paintings on a large sheet but also practicing your 3-step painting process, which seems easy but needs to be done many times to get the wetness and middle value right ( the middle value being the most difficult stage). Thanks, so far so good.

such beautiful pieces! I really like your style! Esp. the 4 nature and the 1 with the two cars on the left side of the street👌🏻The ones in the book I also like👍🏻
Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed watching :)
I also like creating small pieces (mainly sketches with fineliner or a brush pen or gouache w/wo pastels). I even make them so small, that they can lie in my hand🥰 It is as you say - less time consuming, nerve wrecking... and one sees progress so quickly! I started doing them in series of 3, 6 or 9 so I can easily post them on IG

Thank you for this wonderful advice, Matthew! Painting four scenes on one sheet is a great idea.

Great idea! Paint more and worry less about having a picture at the end that you want to hang. I think we talk ourselves out of painting unless the end result is “museum” worthy. Even when you realize you are not a museum artist to start with. Like the small but worthy idea.

Ps I love that book. I love all of the ‘Wades Way’ film and book series. I learned a lot about wet color over color from him. Oh- and your paintings look fantastic as always!

Thanks for posting. Where did you get your studio palette? My coach says I should get one with a single large well like that to aid with color harmony.
