Sob Rock is a solid album. Been playing it daily in my house since it dropped. From the first song to the last, it’s such a wholesome album ❤️ Feels like a nice breeze of cool air.
Join me as I listen to Sob Rock for the first time and learn some of the guitar parts! 🙌 You can skip around using 'chapters' to find your favourite songs where I'll teach you some of the guitar parts. What's your favourite track from the album?
This is perhaps the only channel where comments section doesn't say anything negative things about J. M. Your followers seems all nice. I really dunno understand why ppl hate him sm. I like him for his song writing and great guitar skills. Dun care about his personal life.
He’s also gotten really sly at hiding great licks too in recent memory. Go back to In The Blood’s last chorus and there’s an incredible lick during “should I rise above the flood”
Wild Blue is probably my legit favorite of the album. First time I heard it what came to my head was Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line. Really nice groove and vibe with obvious influences from JJ Cale, Dire Straits and Fleetwood Mac among others. Absolute banger! Til the Right One Comes was another banger as well. My 2nd favorite for sure. My only tiny problem was the solo. I guess I just got used to John playing that minor pentatonic/SRV style over that major chord progression but it just didn't sit well with me considering that he already started with a really nice line before the solo. I wish he stuck with major there it would've continued the vibe of the song. Very minor detail anyway. It also sounded like Graceland at the beginning of the song there too. Why You No Love Me was interesting because the chord progression was really spicy like you said. If only the lyrics were not that cheesy there was so much potential for the song. However I do remember John's interview with Zane Lowe in that there's a reason why those were the chosen lyrics. It's really interesting something that sounds so shallow has a very deep meaning when you open it up. Also I'm still trying to remember what song I've heard that progression from or even just the general feel. Maybe a Chicago or Boston song? Idk. I didn't like it the first time I heard it too but it grew on me after listening to it a couple of times.
My favorite is Wild Blue. I love that Mark Knopflerish strat tone and licks, also remminds me a little bit to Send her my love by Journey. New light is actually one of my favorite songs since came out some years ago, and the I guess I just feel like solo is gold.
Nice react and review solo of john mayer.. i think this album of sob rock an every song in this album is perfect. This ambience bring me to rock ballads 80’ music like toto or duran duran. Just my oppinion 😊
Why You No Love Me grows on you trust me. Day 1 I didn’t like it and now that’s my freaking jam. Watch his interview with apple and he explains why it wasn’t meant to be a joke so seems less strange after that
Darryl! You clearly put a lot of effort into this video so thank you for that! You’re videos are always a highlight of my day when I see them pop up! And and since I always check the description to videos, I noticed you have to update your gear. Now you get to add Suhr Mateus Asato Signature Classic T. Many congrats on that once again! Looking forward to more videos. Thanks for everything Darryl!
Thanks Andrew! This one was tough and tedious to put together, so I’m happy to hear that it doesn’t go unnoticed 🥰 Thanks for reading the description and letting me know - it’s on my long to-do list to update the descriptions 😃 Thanks Andrew!
i think John said one of the principle inspirations for the album was Tarantino's 'Once Upon a time in Hollywood'. Darryl your content is up there with the best on YT, thank you for this awesome video!!
Loved your video. Really nice that you actually listen to the songs before commenting. Well done. I agree with you, Wild Blue and Shot in the Dark are my favorites. Why You No Love Me is my least favorite. But I really really like all of them.
"Guy Bobs Head to John Mayer for 43 minutes" Haha JK great video! I do wish there was more real time commentary while you were listening to the songs! The album is really growing on me
Agreed, I had to be careful because my cameras were balancing on things and I was t sure whether or not you’d be able to hear my commentary over the music so 💁♂️ It was my first video of this style 😋
I smiled at your reaction to wild blue coz that’s exactly what I did. I’m great full that you have highlighted some of the gems in the solos because I’m not a big fan of country rock and this album is a bit too much that way for me, still , John Mayer is a master guitarist, and so are you 💃🎶💃🎶
I’ll never get how some of you musicians can hear a song the first time and know the exact notes and play along. By the way, Wild blue is my absolute favorite from the first listen.
I love your playing and analogy of the album. But for me, they are simply nice smooth rock songs with a lots of lush verbs and pads. I'm missing the creative acoustic genius of John's early works. Songs like Neon, Why Georgia and Gravity are maybe good examples. Newer tunes like Assassin and the infectious pocket of Vultures, will remain more of my favorite John Mayer tunes. They have a bit more edge, something that's missing from Sob Rock.
I agree in a way, and look forward to more of that in the future. For now though, I appreciate John demonstrating that good music doesn’t have to have epic technical guitar. Once in a while it might be cool though, I hear you 💁♂️
@@DarrylSyms Yeah, the days of "guitar shredding" are over hopefully. You're right, John's work is really tastefully done here. I guess his tongue in cheek approach to this album with an 80's vibe works in that respect.
hey man i have maple fretboard and after playing for few hours it gets really sticky i clean the strings before and after playing wash my hands too and also use fast fret after playing but still its not helping .can you please help me
It could be a number of things, but I can assure you that it’s not the fretboards fault. Perhaps you live in a humid environment? Perhaps your finger oils are prone to stickiness? Maybe there’s residue on your fretboard from a previous owner? Or perhaps you just haven’t liked this video yet? 🤔🤪
Really cool video, love your stuff in general, but on a side note, does anyone find after playing guitar for a long time that you start to hear melodies in terms of the fretboard, I find this kinda an issue when trying to learn piano (in fact I suck at it), anyone got advice about how to break your ear out of this trap, idk could just be a me thing :)
If you mean visualizing melodies as a fretboard movement instead of understanding what scale degrees are being played, I think you can make it work towards your advantage if you simply understand what interval each movement corresponds to. Don’t think of it as a problem, it’s just an extra tool in your mind!
I think this is close to what I am experiencing, more in scale formulations and intervals but in terms of the fretboard in general, I tend to see things in terms of not scales and intervals but more in terms of I guess 'notes in sequence' for lack of a better word, I tend to see things as visualizing the fretboard in relation to the chords and melody idk how to describe it accurately without sitting down and properly formulating a paragraph. But I guess that it's more like I am locked into theory by patterns and my limited knowledge of scales (which is probably not as advanced as most of you).
@@DarrylSyms maybe that is the wrong wording for my issue, I cannot hear licks/melodies as clearly as you (note I do not consider myself nearly as proficient as you at the instrument), I still need to sit down and figure licks out, more so i tend to visualize licks on the fretboard rather than recognizing intervals and using my ear 'correctly', (it's kinda hard to describe but this is kinda my best explanation) sorry :/
I’m still a bit uncertain on your question, but I can comment on the very last statement about being “locked into theory patterns”. I think it’s about perspective. You may think that you’re locked into patterns, and you might say it’s because of the theory, but I think it’s about perspective on theory. There are multiple perspectives that we can have about the same topic, but some feel more constricting than others. Find perspectives that grant you freedom. Also train your ear to associate intervallic distances with certain emotions. Another top tip in any case is to learn more songs! I find that many players don’t spend enough time learning music. Players tend to skim over songs, but the real takeaway is from MASTERING songs 🙌
Hey man! i cant find ur patreon and i wanna get your tabs for your Mateus Asato contest, please give me a way to pay for the tabs, paypal or another way plsss
Lol idc if you work a “real” job. You do have time unless you’re working 80 hour weeks but you’re using excuses not to pursue something that you don’t really want to do to put others down out of jealousy. Very hurt
Wild Blue is so Dire Straits' first album. Love it! Hearing a lot of Don Henley and U2 vibes from the album as a whole. What else?
I agree!
"Shot in the Dark" is so Don Henley and then by the end super Fleetwood Mac. So tasty
Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton are definitely in there...
Wild blue has the same vibe of newlight from his old album

I find it the most obnoxious song on the album by a mile. The lyrics and instruments are so cliched and why you no love me sounds like an asian joke
