No, the (5.56mm, 7.62mm) assault rifle and its associated ammunition was developed to be a more usable and compact light weight weapon than the full high power rifles used in WW2 (.306, .308). Most gunfights in WW2 occurred at less than 400 metres or so, where the less powerful round is still highly effective for killing humans. the weapon is lighter to carry, more comfortable to fire and you can carry more ammunition for the same weight. I state: these weapons are extremely effective military weapons, ( even in semi-automatic mode.) they were designed to KILL humans and humans only. for that purpose they are extremely effective, to this day.
