    Afternoon everyone! Hope you enjoy a little bar install video, the Avanti Cheap Bike Challenge build will be out tomorrow (part 2/3) 😄🤙

    My first impression when this bar released is that the bar ends should be longer so that it can be used for another hand position (as you said), it should be lighter maybe made of alloy instead of cromoly and that Surly should release a silver version for us restomodders.

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад +3

      They definitely should be! And yeah a few people have mentioned that. I don’t mind the weight, but it would increase sales if they made an alloy version I’m sure!
      Definitely agree, silver complements the retro bikes out there really well 👌
      I would go through the effort of stripping it, if it was going on an 80s/90s mtb 😎🤙

    • @bosanderspublictheology
      @bosanderspublictheology 2 года назад +1

      I'm assuming that you figured this out eventually (a dangerous thing to do) but if you mount the brakes and shifters from below (bring them up the drops) then you have an actual hood position and the shifter works WAY better.

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад

      @@bosanderspublictheology they’re an awesome handlebar! Yeah I tried them in lots of different positions.
      I’ve ended up with the levers down below and with the shifter and dropper lever up “top”-above the join.
      This has worked best for me, along with an extension of the original hood position which I use on some uphills and long straights etc 😎🤙 very comfy bar, loving it still!

    Being a fan of board racers this is all good options on position of controls aside Surly have no doubt restarted a journey to north road bars, which back in the day you could have one way up for touring then unspent the qr wing nuts an reset for race drop position, this was often seen on 1930s to 1960s in U.K. I gravitate towards path racers what you know call gravel bikes, first time I rode a proper period race path finder on loose gravel an cinders you immediately notice how slow an cram the steering is so much less nervous than modern rides, I've tested a cycle cross bike by sunn against a Iona lava dome against a jmb path racer from 1926 the jmb was the calmest down a steep long hill 30 ish mph it just enables you to deal with constantly moveing on the surface your riding part geometry of frame but also very much the bars an your body position being more prone you can rest your elbows on your upper legs as a steady sort of.if you can find true period drop bars sorta north road in appearance only issue tend to be narrow but very elegant to look at, I hope Surly produce some of that style in a quality material.
    For anyone trying this, if you have enough high rise from stems you can use beach cruiser bars upside down that give the width but a tad to much drop, I'll try these Surly corner bars on my Kona cheers for review.

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад

      Thanks heaps for sharing! That’s one thing I like about them, too. That path racer look 👌 the Corner bar is certainly wide enough and it’s treating me well so far. Hope it goes well for you, too!
      Are you putting them on your Kona Lava Dome? That would be a great match!

    based from my experience with these, the drops are where i spend most of my time on the bar. with that said, i placed my shifter to the drop portion of the bar instead of on the hoods, so it's easily within reach. it was an added challenge when we had to put the bar tape on, but it paid off in the long run.
    without a bar end extension to make the hood more viable, i don't find the hoods very comfortable to ride this with.

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад +1

      Hey, thank you! I’ll be doing an updated video next week but basically I’m running it as intended (shifters etc up top) but extending the upper knob/hood part so there’s more room.
      It’s the comfiest that way for me, with my setup and my sized hands etc.
      Splitting them (brakes down low, shifter etc up top) is pretty good too!
      I’ll go over a few things in the video next week and show how I’m extending the bars (without welding) 🤙

      It is a 22.2 bar but it might depend where you put it. It would go on the “hood” part as it’s straight but it might not slide up the bend on the lower portion. I don’t really know, it is a shallow bend so it might 🤔

    I'm not sure if I like where the shifters sit. When I look at these they seem to force you to use the drops for braking. Seem like the shifters would be better somewhere on the tops but you can't install them that way. Only time a lot of riding will tell. One final note these would hard to use navigating between 🌳 and tight twisty trails but good for maybe commuting ( kind of iffy there)

    • @toastyrides
      @toastyrides  2 года назад +1

      Yeah they’re aimed at using the drops, mainly. You could install shifters up top, depending what you have, if you wanted.
      But mine will stay down low, accessibility in the drops is my goal.
      They provide plenty of leverage for cornering, climbing but aren’t quite as wide as some other bars out there (and the bars I swapped off for these) so clearance hasn’t been an issue for me.
      I’m loving them 😁👌 my only gripe is the horns/hoods area isn’t long enough, but ah well- they can be extended.
