For context, it seems that the entire house has been cursed for a long time. The darkness can either kill or possess anyone in their way. The creatures seem to be part of the curse as well.
From the looks of it, there are technically two outcomes. Either you succumb to the curse itself (by killing everyone) or purify it (by saving everyone from their potential deaths) before your Dad comes home.
Does the cat need to die for the purify ending?

You don't have to kill anyone, not even the giant rat. For the cat, you can give it the milk, then use the water bucket to put out the fire at the piano room. Cat's safe and sound.
Note: These are all the endings at the moment, but the dev is planning to add more secrets, activities and endings soon (including a pacifist ending in time for Halloween).

Could make sense - she might be trying to put her daughters to sleep peacefully, so when the father gets home they wont feel fear or pain when he kills them

Probably the dad killed him. That’s one of the few things that kinda made sense.

To avoid becoming a monster? Because she knows about the curse, she plays the flute to lift it.
Plot twist: the cat is actually the demon/eldritch abomination/paranormal whatever that put the curse in the first place, that's why the girl kills it everytime.

I don't get the lore of this game can someone explain to me?
I think there's a curse on the house that turns the family into monsters. So the girl has to either help or kill them.
from how I see it, in the demo the father is the monster and because we see his corpse here, the house is caught in a sort of a curse where they’re in a loop that in which if they die, they’ll turn into undead/monsters so the little girl has to either save them or relive the loop again

@@somelolicon293 the dad most likely killed the kid in what i'm assuming is his study (wouldn't a basement be in one of the side rooms as opposed to his room only? also explains the desk and chair). i'm unsure if the father is an alcoholic or not or if maybe he drank and the house then took advantage of his lower will to make him kill toby, but it seems to be implied with the bottle in the study and the bottle on top of his closet. we also know there's alcohol in the house as the mother drinks a bottle of wine after making the sandwiches and passes out in the kitchen as a result.
But you didn't have to cut me off make out like it never happened and that we were nothing and I don't even need your love but you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough and you didn't have to stoop so long got your friends collect your records and then change your number and I don't even need that though now you're just somebody that I used to know
This reminds me of that lovecraft's story. With creepy cursed house, and succubus-maid.
Fortunately that curse, like most things in our worls, was weak to fire.

What i remember about this particular one, is that a young man with his his bride (?) stayed in a creeapy house with a hole, that is a some sort of a 4th-dimentional pocket space, or smth.
Also there were a creepy maid, that is actually a succubus.
And also his uncle tried to kill him. It could be another relative, but with Lovecraft, it's 90% murderous uncles.

This seems VERY heavily inspired by Lakeview Cabin. They share the same survival-horror premise of trying to save everyone from horrible monsters, and the same trial-and-error puzzle mechanics.

This sort of has coraline vibes but this is a really cool game it’s not something u see often... a little girl going against her own family mutating into horrors, the closest thing I could think of is that old school gretel and hansel series

I had the same feeling when I watched spirited away the first time, there was an intense feeling, and strange memories lkke fragments, it felt and seemed so fucking real. It felt like I had seen the movie before during my childhood. Which obviously was impossible.

I think this is a prequel or reboot of the newgrounds flash game that goes by the same name, it was a pretty popular game when it first came out so you probably played that and didn't remember the name

Seeing how this game changed in years it's strange, I remember that the sister was locked in the room and the mother wasn't in the game.
And the toilet wasn’t so lethal.
The lights on/off music reminds me of the overworld/spectral realm music from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Cool and nice to listen to (on) with a distorted and uneasy side (off).
Even your intro is quick and straight to the point. No fancy edits or crazy music. Its nice to keep it simple.

I love the indie horror games that have that feel of a RPGMaker/WolfRPG Maker horror game. They always have some weird abstract things with the environments and characters so that every time you think nothing is out of the usual or you're out of a bad situation, you find out things are not as they seem.
