What do you think is the greatest live guitar moment?
Buckethead nunchuck fail
Eruption, live without a net
Nirvana live at reading love buzz
Eddie
When Kurt cobain sang hey as you are or when he hit a guy with us guitar.
Prince also has this cool moment where after he steals While My Guitar Gently Weeps, he throws his telecaster to high heaven and walks away like a boss
Thats a great guitar moment
I always wondered how that guitar didn’t land
That's my favorite one on the list.
This is the correct answer.
Just about to comment the same thing. I thought that was gonna be number 1 lol
Keith Richards hitting someone with his Tele as if it were a baseball bat and then immediately continuing to play it, is probably the best advertisement and endorsement Fender ever received for the Telecaster. Thing just tanked that blow as if it was built for that shit :D
NEVER HAPPEND WE HAVE THE TAPE HE NEVER HIT THE GUY ! LOOK IT UP . HE ALLMOST HIT THE GUY !
Built like a tank, swung like a master. :-p
Probably the best advertisement for the Rolling Stones, too!
Quite disappointing the guy hitting a fan, what a douche
I support Keith Richards on this one. After Mark David Chapman, these guys have to be cautious. They can no longer assume that anyone getting within an arm's reach of them, has good intentions.
Dude, Clapton's "backing guitarist" was Robbie Robertson from The Band. It was their show - and the whole point was that he took over for Clapton and absolutely wailed... He's also one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Also one of the greatest Concert DVD's of all time, directed by Martin Scorsese. Have it on DVD a long time, fellow Irishman Van Morrison stole the show in my opinion. Which is amazing considering the line up.
Fax I’ve seen it as well I believe it’s called the last Waltz or sum But it’s a great Doc And Robbie Robertson truly is underrated
never heard of them dont care
Robbie Robertson turned out to be a piece of crap as a human being he was just a little boy when the band took him in he claimed he wrote all those songs and screwed all the other band members
@@patrickfrancis33 yep The Last Waltz, quality.
John Mayer grabbing a fan's guitar, plugging it in and finishing the Gravity solo with it, signing it, and sending it back to the fan is an all time guitar nerd moment for me!
The jam introduction of « Californication » by RHCP at Slane Castle still gives me goosebumps even after all these years
I have watched the whole show several times its just freaking incredible
When JF and Flea lock into a musical and physical groove, it's magic.
@@RoloTomasie and with the synchronized audience clap, magic
So you Play Marvel Contest Of Champions? 😂
Lets gooo
I think this is the first time anyone has called Robbie Robertson "Clapton's backup guitarist". This was from the Band's last live show, and Eric was there as a guest musician. If you haven't seen it, you should watch the concert film "The Last Waltz". It's directed by Martin Scorsese, and the music is top notch. A who's who of 60s and 70s awesomeness.
Just saw your comment after I made similar one. Music Is Win does some great stuff but he slipped up with this. Let's forgive him though because his content is usually very good.
@@mr.stevejones1947 yeah dude I got a little defensive when he said that about Robbie😂. It’s okay because Tyler is a great human
Glad someone said something lol.
How could anyone who's into music not know The Band?
I was thinking the same thing! How the heck has Tyler not seen “The Last Waltz”?! The first great concert film?! Enjoyed the video though. Thanks!
Hendrix sacrificing his guitar to the guitar gods and his playing of national anthem at woodstock were some of the most important moments of music history
When SRV breaks a string in my little sister and the roadie switches out the guitar, strap and all within a bar.
I was thinking of that one during Clapton's "strapless" performance. Guess he could only have one per list and the magazine figured him getting booed and still playing amazingly was more important.
That's a crazy smooth move, must have practiced that a lot.
srv broke my little sister’s hymen
I was looking for this comment. would have postet it otherwise... have my like
Credo che chi stesse fischiando stevie ray vaughan non sapesse altamente a chi stessero fischiando
Prince's solo to "While my guitar gently weeps", live at the Rock n roll hall of fame is probably one of the sickest live solos I've ever heard. To take a masterpiece, take it apart, and replace it with your own masterpiece, that's what made Prince an absolute genius.
Not just what he played, but the way in which he played it gives me goosebumps every time I re-watch it.
I think who he's on stage with too, there's some crazy talent there. The fact he just outshines everyone, and everyone just leaves him to it: some of their faces suggest that they hadn't rehearsed it either.
@@leerobbo92 Yeah, up on stage with the rest of the Wilburys, Steve Winwood and Dhani Harrison playing a tribute for his dad. The smile on Dhani's face when Prince fires up is just gold.
Prince doesn't nearly get the recognition he deserves as a guitarist. As a composer? Sure. But as a masterful guitarist? That's rare.
That moment where BB King breaks and changes a string mid performance definitely deserves a place on this list!
I was thinking about it when I read the video title
Was thinking about that too. 👑
Exactly what I came here to say too.
David Gilmour's solos on Comfortably Numb on the Pulse tour. Saw Floyd in San Antonio on that tour I think in 93 or 94 and my jaw dropped. My greatest live guitar moment by a mile. It was mind blowing!
Prince throwing his guitar up in the air AND IT DOESN'T LAND at the end of his awesome "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" solo.
People are still asking where it went
The best in my opinion is Jimmy Page’s double neck solo from Stairway to Heaven in The Song Remains the Same!
Agreed broo!!
For real. It was that song & DVD that got me started playing guitar.
one of the best moments on the DVD
How about him playing violin bow solo in dazed and confused
Regardless of all the great sections in that DVD and all those Zeppelin performances, Page is God. I would shit my pants if Tyler got him on the Guitar Villains podcast
Prince really was super underrated as a guitar player. He got the credit for songwriting, but as a guitarist he was just legendary. Id argue that he's up there with Hendrix. Every solo just pours out so much of his soul
I agree
yessir, one of my favorites
Prince. Period.
I don’t know man. Hendrix is a very high peak. I need to listen to more prince if you say he’s that good
@@underskillednunderpaid prince is an amazing guitaris
Man, Prince’s Super Bowl halftime show - Purple Rain in the actual rain was godlike.
The thing with Stevie Ray performance is the crowd was expecting acoustic blues and jazz. Instead, they got their faces melted off by the greatest blues guitarist ever. Idk bout you but I wouldn’t be complaining if I were them
Greatest blues guitarist ever??? Was Hendrix there?
@@subzero308 I’m definitely in the minority but to me hendrix is a guitar tech compared to srv
@@subzero308 maybe Hendrix wins overall but SRV wins in blues
David gilmour when he appeared on top of the wall at a waters concert!
The Pantera ‘domination’ solo and breakdown live in Moscow… absolutely amazing!
David Gilmour playing the comfortably numb solo on the 1980 the wall tour!
it would be great if there was good footage of the tour
The best thing about the Keith incident was that he had the presence of mind to turn his volume down so not to interrupt the song
Probably either Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock or EVH - Eruption Live Without A Net 1986
The greatest moment imo was when evh played at les Paul's tribute show . And him and les were together on the same stage . 2 innovation masters together at the same time
my favourite live moment is probably Hendrix's Purple Haze at Atlanta Pop festival because it's the first live hendrix performance I've watched and just the finesse of the performance.
SRV at El Mocambo. Epic to say the least. Him at his best.
That version of Texas Flood is probably the single greatest live performance ever recorded.
@@SimpleManGuitars1973 100% agreed. That as well as Joe Walsh are the two main factors that got me into playing guitar.
@@cookieman876 Joe Walsh may never be mentioned in the "greatest ever" category but he is DEFINITELY in the running for COOLEST ever! Anybody that can spend 50 years tolerating Don Henley and Glen Frey would HAVE to be and I'm saying this as an actual Eagles fan! Don Felder is also excellent.
Tc electronic named a guitar pedal for that presentation
Can you told me, what happent with srv in this video? If i understand they dont like SRV?
One of my favorite moments is when SRV breaks his string mid song and does the cleanest guitar swap in history
Prince's solo in While My Guitar Gently Weeps is pretty iconic
Prince playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The solo is fantastic and it is just a mind blowing performance.
I don’t really know about moments, there is a ton of incredible and unforgettable ones. But there is something about the Alchemy live version of Sultans of Swing. It’s just perfection on every single level:)
One of my favorite live moments was Rush in Rio: the huge crowd singing along with YYZ.
One of my favorites is when Ronnie Van Zant walked Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, and Gary Rossington onto the "forbidden tongue" when opening for the Stones and Allen Collins went ahead and blew everyone away with the Free Bird Solo.
My aunt and grandma was at that EXACT Jimi Hendrix concert where he lights his guitar on fire. My grandma died before I was born so my aunt told me. They went to see the Monkees and Jimi Hendrix opened for them. I never listened to the Monkees so I guess they were softer music and when the saw Jimi Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire and smashing it they thought they were having a nightmare! My grandma was so terrified LMAO! But little did they know they would witness a LEGENDARY moment! Nice video!!!
Stevie wasn't getting booed by "blues purists". He was getting booed by jazz fans. He was at the Montreux Jazz Festival. That was when David Bowie discovered him. A few years later he headlined that festival.
Whoever was booing him weren’t jazz fans or any true fans of music. Jazz fans, at least the ones I know and played with, would LOVE to sit and listen and get into anything he would have decided to play. The people booing were, well, they shouldn’t have been there…
@@CliffHairston Sadly not everybody "got" his greatness as we do. Literally the dumbest statement concerning guitar playing I've ever heard is someone told me once that "Stevie Ray Vaughan is overrated". I literally laughed condescendingly and said "uh...no..." and they said "yes he is" and I realized they were serious. They also love death metal if that tells you anything... Lol.
I love that stevie gets booed off stage and all he has to say about it is “thank you very much”. A lot of people wouldn’t have remained so composed.
Best "Live Git Moment" I've EVER seen in person: Jeff Beck on the "There and Back" tour...October, 1980 at The Palladium Theater in NYC. At the end of a RAGING rendition of "Going Down"--his final encore tune--he raises his "Seymour Duncan Tele" over his head as if about to SMASH it on the stage floor!! The entire audience responds with an immediate and collective "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!". He STOPS...and instead HANDS IT to someone in the front row!! After getting passed around a bit, it eventually makes it's way back to the stage...living to fight another day!!
Seeing Edward van Halen live for the first time in 1978
I’m not sure Robbie Robertson of the band would appreciate being called a second guitar player
“His buddy”
Great songwriter
@@rjvanetten3123 he screwed levon helm and the rest of them saying he wrote it he was just a young boy when they met him and they took him in that's the real story it's not a nice guy
In all fairness when you're playing next to Clapton, you're the second guitarist...unless your last name is Hendrix.
@@joecurmaci5880 Levon was also petty as hell read robbies book to see it from his perspective. After I read it I was more inclined to take robbies side.
Please tell me the “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” performance with Prince in on here.
Gotta include Prince’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” solo
George Harrison's son actually said he felt that was really self indulgent on the part of Prince. George's son was playing on stage with them during that performance.
@@SimpleManGuitars1973 I mean, still really cool
For me: George Thorogood and The Destroyers. They were the musical guests on one of those weekend sketch comedy shows. Played Bad To The Bone. I said to myself, “I have to learn how to do that!” Been annoying my family for 40 years now.
When Kirk got his v ripped out of his hands mid solo!!
Johnny A's "One November Night"
One of the most underrated guitarists on top of that. The only guitarist on yt I've seen mention Johnny A is Ben Eller once
Man I can't stop watching your videos. Thanks for getting me through the work days.
That prince moment gave me goosebumps… thanks a lot for this !
It’s got to be Jimi at Monterey Pop for me. Besides him burning his guitar, it was legendary because it was his major show in the U.S. after becoming a star in the U.K. Not to mention, his set at the festival is just so solid. His version of Killing Floor is insane. Gotta love it.
I'd like to nominate the Seattle '89 live performance by Metallica in it's entirety. Absolutely brutal speed, tone and crowd.
The artwork on that Monterey Pop strat looked amazing to me. Would've loved to see it being played in more shows.
It’s good that you make videos so often!
I think Jimi Hendrix playing machine gun at Gilmore east is arguably the best guitar performance.
An apology is owed to Clapton’s “back-up guitar player” Robbie Robertson.
Another one of my favorite moments (it was more of a planned section) KISS when Ace Freehley did his guitar solo sections live and the smoke comes out of his pickups and then he sets it down while the note keeps ringing out and he walks off stage to get another guitar to finish the solo. I’ve believe several times the guitar flew up and then exploded when he gets his other guitar.
It is absolutely amazing!
Great vid man!
Just my personal pick, Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption at Live Without a Net
1991 Monsters of rock was a pretty interesting live show with around 1 million people and the Russia army as security. Pantera was damn good wasn’t there tho.
Now that is legendary
Is that where Dime ripped off the absolute perfect solo in Domination??
Dude. That prince clip never fails to bring a tear to my eye and shivers down my spine. It is incredible.
That’s actually Robbie Robertson of The Band who picked up after claptons strap broke, it’s at the last waltz
My favorite live guitar moment is the live version of kid Charlemagne by vulfpeck when they harmonized the solo that was amazing
The guy who played when Clapton lost his strap is only Robbie Robertson and ‘The Band’.
Jimi playing Machine gun at the Fillmore East and hardly moving an inch and really capturing the meaning of war.
David Gillmour's LEGENDARY outro solo from Comfortably Numb, live on the 1994 Pulse tour beats most of the moments on this list.
Stevie ray Vaughan braking a string and his tech changes out the guitar on the fly. Amazing
I was also going to comment this. That should've been #1 on this list for sure
Prince throws his guitar in the air and it never lands at the end of while my guitar gently weeps
Omg, that old studio is fire🔥
John Petrucci's Hollow Years solo in Live at the Budokan never fails to give me goosebumps. And Derek Trucks making his guitar sing while sitting in between John Mayer and BB King brings me to guitar heaven every time I listen to it.
Claptons back up is one of the most famous song writers of all time and lead guitar player of the band
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb - Live 8
I also just saw John 5 live and pretty much every song goes on there. Between the crazy masks, crazy teles, effortless shredding and much more, it’s just so cool.
I worked at Hard Rock Cafe in 2002 and that clip from Satisfaction played on all the screens four times per day... every day. It's was wonderful.
Easily Fred Durst’s awesome guitar solo
You spelled Lil Wayne wrong.
Plot twist: he moved back to the old studio
Stevie Ray Vaughans first appearance on Austin City Limits. OMG! His version of Voodoo Chile! Epic. Total inspiration.
Angus young thrashing around on stage like a maniac
Plot twist: Joe Rogan gave Jimi some DMT before he went out to perform, and that’s why he burned his guitar on stage
That's crazy man
Joe Rogan was born in 1967
If Jimi smashed his guitar like that today, you'd have a bunch of kids on Twitter saying, "He could have donated that guitar to a music charity!"
Also, not a guitar moment, but I love when Maynard takes a Stage Invader during a Tool show and puts them into a choke hold... and keeps singing the song.
Basically all of the ones I thought should be on here were! Great list!
I'm 48 and a guitarist yet always looked forward yet the best playing was from the past. Thank you! I have a new direction now!!!!
Great video, I was at that Steve Vai gig! He was awesome as usual….
Ahhhh that blues purist line really hit me in my heart.
This is the soonest i've ever been. Also love ur stuff keep it up.
Very cool content! Thanks!
My pick is live without a net. Summer nights or the 316/Eruption solo. Eddie just looks like he's having so much fun. It just boils with enjoyment. I can feel his emotion with all of his smiles and awesome playing. I wish i could have been at just one of their concerts.
Forgot about the Prince halftime show in the rain. Thanks for showing✌️
"He also wouldn't have had a back up guitar player..." That comment was the honest side of rude or honest. I could not have giggled harder. Brilliant.
I remember hearing an audio that was supposedly Lemmy Kilmister telling a stage diver, well, "No stage diving!" and the thud heard was Lemmy hitting the violator on the head with his bass. "You want to get onstage, get your own band."
Hi Tyler, for me it was in Tokyo, at the Budokan 1999, Carlos Santana concert, Eric Clapton was in Tokyo for holidays and joined Santana for a 45 minutes Jam session, and I was lucky to see it
The closing solo of comfortably numb at Pink Floyd's Pulse concert gets me every time. Perhaps the most perfect phrasing of that piece ever, which is a masterpiece at any time, but was taken to another level there.
What a warm video
The Experience Music Project in Seattle had the Monterey guitar when i visited there in 2005. Super cool
Kashmir live at O2
They were around 65 but that was the highlight of the night and the best live performance of Kashmir.
Cool stuff!
I will add Hendrix Woodstock, not just for the performance, but for his epic guitar tone and total mastery of feedback. That tone is something many guitarists have been chasing for 50+ years.
I’ve been a classic country/bluegrass fan and amateur musician my whole life and yet I still can’t watch a Prince clip without getting somewhat emotional every time I see him. And not just for his contributions to music but simply for who the man was as a human being. We lost him far too soon. May he Rest In Peace 💜
Les Paul and Mary Ford! Thank you for making me discover it!
I saw Vai in Sacramento, California with that headset getup… it’s was very cool
Everytime Angus does his duck walk live on stage it could be a great guitar moment
The breakdown from "Domination" by Pantera in Germany and the concert where SRV breaks a string and switches guitars as he keeps playing are two of the biggest moments that stick out in my mind.
I wish Id been lucky enough to catch a Stevie Ray show!Love the channel, you rock
I have that same issue and can remember reading some of those entries, but here are some of my personal favourites
- Jimi Hendrix Experience at Woodstock 1969 (without a doubt)
- Queen at Live Aid 1985
- Metallica in Seattle 1989 (Live Shit Binge & Purge)
- The Beatles on Ed Sullivan 1964
- The Who Live At Leeds 1970
Saw Steve Vai once during the Real Illusions tour and he had the whole laser suit getup for Bad Horsie. It’s way more impressive than it’s shown in the video!
When I see that Jimi Hendrix footage I just think "Hey, If you really didn't want that guitar I could have taken it off your hands."
