Don’t do it. I know that is a very simplistic view but my opinion is that I don’t know these people, I don’t know what’s going on in their lives and I have no say in their relationships. So even if marketing is pushing it, don’t ship actual people.

Thanks Terrence! :) "We love them, hate them, but ultimately we take away their humanity" - so perfectly put; alongside audience entitlement there comes a sad point in an artist's fame where their craft fades into the background in favor of the sensationalised image the public projects onto them. Britney Spears was a highly talented singer/performer, before the media quickly turned her into a mere sex symbol and the tabloids turned her into a weekly "freakshow" for their own gain. Likewise, a lot of the actors I looked into for this video seem frustrated in merely being reduced to love team fantasies or cutesy/squeaky-clean role models for audiences when they are and can offer so much more.
Weirdly enough, I think it comes from the same play of gaining audiences. Specifically audiences that crave (romantic) connection. Instead of an "established" couple, the potential connection is between the celeb and the fan.
True! I would say they're two sides of the same coin though; fans would still likely obsess over these performers' dating choices once word _does_ get out about their potential romantic relationships.

I´m from Mexico, and while we don´t have love teams, there is a huge trend of politicians marrying telenovela actresess and or influencers. This marriages strangely tend to end as soon as they leave office
As someone who's aromantic and very honestly does not care at all about romance this is fascinating in a "I feel like a martian studying earthlings" sort of way because... man, I don't understand this at all. I'm also a firm believer that actors and performers deserve their privacy and do not care to know about their personal lives. I'd much rather just know that they enjoyed working on the projects that I enjoyed watching, and see them talking about said projects. Personal lives are personal. So that this is even a thing is just "... why?" on so many levels to me and I feel bad for the people whose profession leaves them trapped in these sorts of situations.
Very much agree with entertainers deserving their privacy like everyone else, and I wouldve thought this was common knowledge 'cause like... they're just doing a job like the rest of us. Sadly we live in a world of celebrity worship, and this particular industry literally encourages and profits off that very behaviour. It's sad, and I fail to fully understand the mindset behind it all myself.

As an asian American, I always feel like the Filipino culture and people get looked down on compared to other asian cultures. Although, I am not as connected to my Filipino heritage as I would like to be, having a deep dive look into it is something related to my heritage is something that I always am drawn to. Cruz and Geronimo came from other love team tandems themselves before they were paired up, and Geronimo's initial - and main - claim to fame is her singing. But yes, good point - not all are equal in the love team fluidity landscape apparently. Cruz and Geronimo are two examples of fans accepting their more "fluid" assignments.

I discovered Filipino movies a couple years and the concept of ‘love teams’ was so weird to me but I was still stuck in by it 😂 I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them besides the toxic fans. They remind me of BL shippers, which is why I avoid those communities now. Great video! I haven’t seen any commentary videos on Filipino culture and this was so interesting!
I've been seeing quite a few comparisons to the general BL genre with this trend! Yeah, I think the concept on its own is innocent enough - it's more so what it mutates into in the general culture (and I think both toxic fans and industry managers play a role in this). I actually was featured on a Pinoy romcom called "On the wings of Love". I drew a caricature of the lead actors Nadine and James on their date scene filmed at Pier 39 in San Francisco . It was interesting watching their interactions . The Nadine hit James when he tried to peek at the drawing.😅
@@ana-isabel The production company was filming in San Francisco that week. They came to Pier 39 to shoot and the director came to the caricature booth I managed . They asked to purchase a couple caricature and wanted to film the artist illustrating Nadine and James. Since I was the best dood there that day I took the order. They came later that day and set up the scene at our stand and I just drew them as normal. I didn't think I was actually going to be in the show but I was on camera for like 7 minutes. I did the drawing, stopped filming, paid for the drawing and they told me the episode wouldn't air until May that year (filmed it in February) so I forgot about my appearance. May, rolls by and I was playing worship at a pinoy church . After church we had dinner and all the girls started saying " Brother Brandon's a TV star!" I was like huh? Oh yeah the show premiered on TFC. That was funny but, that Monday and months after , Phillipeano folks mobbed our caricature stand and wanted to get drawn/take pictures with me because of the show.
First off, welcome back to the Tube of You. This is what I enjoy about your content Ana, you can take a subject I am totally unaware of, and make it interesting. The funniest thing might have been the moment of Skype nostalgia.😆 I've seen this sort of rabid fandom pop up in numerous areas outside of the Philippines, music fans who get wound up because their favourite band isn't wearing the same outfits as they did 5 years ago, or aren't writing the same style music as they did 5 years ago, or aren't playing their old music live anymore. Instead of supporting the artists in their actual artistic direction and growth, they mostly express the wish to control the way they look or what they perform. Fans get attached to the stage persona and ignore the fact that there are vital individuals behind those stage persona. Toxic fandom pops up all over the place in a toxic society. Another enjoyable video Ana, your presentation was again well considered and confidently delivered.
One of the best compliments is hearing I can make some obscure subject matter interesting to someone - so thank you! I think general fan entitlement sadly pervades entertainment cultures across the globe due to the commodification of celebrities and public figures. They become just as much a product as their art through stage personas and brand imaging, and invested audiences (often subconsciously) attach to a rigid idea of how they should look, act, and feel. It's toxic for sure, and definitely isn't limited to the Philippines - though love teams are certainly a concentrated instance of this culture.

Marvel and the latest issue they are facing with Johnathan Majors and the assault allegations. Do they let it play out or will they jettison him before it is a PR issue? Entertainment corporations must be continually frustrated that their humans aren't as manageable as the characters they have created. 🙄

I's really nice to see this topic finally get a really good, in-depth analysis, top shelf stuff. I remember that AlDub was everywhere back in 2015, every girl in class were swooning.
I think people just starved for connection and relationship (covid and increased social anxiety may had something to do with it), so living it vicariously relievs some of that loneliness. Where it gets weird for me - is when fans ship streamers and internet content makers (some of whom are underage). That's just too much. Not to mention, that they don't have any publishers or companies to protect them, and have very young and very vocal fanbases. So maybe it could be an interesting topic to dive into! :) Oh, and great videp as always! Thank you! ♥

Jacksepticeye and Markiplier were actually one of my "case studies". Ultimately, I decided the whole love team trend was interesting enough to stand on its own - but I may continue to do a follow up video that focuses more on the former!

Also I too wasn't exempt from the random shipping/pairing with other people when it came to family parties lol; my relatives aren't actually all that into love teams, but man, it's _everywhere_ in the media back home. It's cool to see the indies in the Filipino entertainment industry dabble into other genres besides the typical rom-com stuff, so hopefully we'll see these types of films gain a bit more traction (especially with the rise of streaming services)!

Great essay. Really hits home, this one. Perhaps growing up overseas lets one decide more easily that such love team content is not for them, but it definitely takes a bit of defiance and/or a "whatever" attitude to think the same way if you grew up in the thick of it.
What you're saying is true. I'm from the Philippines, I grew up here and never have lived anywhere else in my 27 years on this planet other than this country. I grew up not really knowing much about love teams because I was privileged enough to have cable, while the majority of my peers did not. It made me feel out of place when they talked about their fave love teams from ABSCBN and I could never relate. This kind of media stunt is designed for the masses. I dont know if I call myself lucky for not being part of the mass which this thing appeals to, but really I still don't get it and I feel bad for these actors & actresses for having to keep up relationships they don't really want to be in just for the sake of keeping the fans happy. 🙁
Not my usual topic of interest but I am fascinated with how the differences of how these fans could perceive information from media. From what I've observed, Filipinos have an extremely strong family centered culture and that could focus the attention on the unit rather then supporting the individual success. I can see how one would feel trapped when the whole country is watching and expecting. Also your eye shadow is magical
Interesting link! Though I feel like it may be less our family-centric values and moreso decades of our entertainment industry fostering a highly profitable culture of "kilig" (romantic giddiness). Love teams thus become products that offer this in concentrated amounts, and viewers start to see them less as individual artists with unique talents to give and more as units that can provide an endless stream of kilig-induced dopamine. And thank you - quite proud of my eye look for this one actually :')

As a Swede, having lived my entire life in Sweden, I can't say I know much about Filipino culture, so it was very interesting to get this glimpse. Having caught my loyal viewership with well-made and interesting videos about stuff that I am at least somewhat aware of, I'm glad I clicked this video as well.
The gay love teams thing is interesting to me because on one side, it's great that the lgbt people are being welcomed into such a big part of the popular culture but on the other..it's a very toxic part of it. Like, it shouldn't be lgbt people getting more love teams, but rather both the existing lgbt and heterosexual love teams should be dying out and the lgbt should just be accepted in everyday life. But I don't know, I'm a heterosexual guy with an aversion to all types of shipping celebrities or any irl person for that matter (I'm not Filipino, but you can find these behaviors pretty much everywhere), so maybe it's a matter of perspective.
No I definitely agree; if I'm being completely honest I do feel like the whole "love team" concept is worn out at this point, and our entertainment industry could fare a lot better without it. Though realistically I feel like it's here to stay for a long while, and it's at least nice to see them start giving non-hetero relationships the spotlight too. My mom was hooked on watching Fil soaps and rom-coms while we still had the Filipino channels subscription. I could only pass by in confusion when I noticed the same actors always cast together because I could not understand Tagalog, so this finally clarified something that seemed so manufactured to me.
Finally, someone said it! Sometimes, from what I noticed, other pairings are pushed to just be in a relationship in real life because it is good for the image and for the bank account. At least that's my theory on JaDine. XD But thank you for saying something about the weird love team fandom here in PH.
Ooh I also came across theories in my research about JaDine all being a ruse, which I guess wouldn't surprise me. I'm honestly with James Reid on the whole thing, its a gimmick that I feel has overstayed it's welcome - though I realistically don't see it leaving our industry anytime soon what with all that cash rolling innn 🫠💸
@@ana-isabel that is true. I don't think it's leaving any time soon as long as people from older generation and younger & newer generations are exposed & sold this type of media. Lucky for me, I never really had to be fed this type of media given I was in a higher privilege than most, we could afford cable back then, so instead of watching Teleseryes & Telenovelas in which these love teams were blasting, I was watching Western Cartoons. But for most people in this country, it is the kind of entertainment that is attainable by the masses, therefore, it is the media that sells a lot. It is the only type of media that influences majority of the population (especially the younger ones). I don't blame anyone for not having the type of privilege I had growing up, I blame the people who created this.. I feel bad for people in Filipino showbiz having have to face backlash for having a life outside of media. It is both toxic and dangerous for the love teams and the fans.
Shipping real folk you don't know will always be wild to me. Hell, even if you know them, as someone that recently kinda got a taste of what the experience it's like in an odd way i won't get into lol. I'll always maintain that shipping real people is off-limits unless it's an obvious joke (like "shipping" Seagal and Putin). As an outsider, I don't get the appeal of Love Teams at all, but then again I'm not the target audience. It's super obviously highly manufactured guff to inflate interest in these celebrities so they can sell more merchandize and media. I'd be okay with it if people were "in on the joke" (like how wrestling fans know it's all manufactured but pretend that it's real), but people take this stuff way too seriously and forget that they're actual real people with real lives.
Exactly! It teeters into pretty dangerous territory, and I can only feel bad for the artists subjected to it (many of whom likely entered the industry for the sake of pursuing a craft, only to find themselves roped into this marketing ploy).
The way this entire system is just about identical to Thai Koojin is kind of wild. I wonder if one influenced the other? The only difference I noticed is that members of a koojin arent really prevented from acting with other actors...they just have to keep doing events/fanmeets/concerts with their most popular pairing. (Yaya and Nadech are one of the most popular examples of this, though they finally admitted to being really together.)
I totally get hoping two people will get together or work out as a couple, but I have always been against shipping real people because there are always gonna be people who start harassing those people
This isn’t in anyway to wipe off the accountability of the shippers for being entitled, but I also think that the media going out of their way to make that ship marketable should at least shoulder some of the responsibility. At the very least lighting the flames of the passion that people have for the ship. The “conspiracy theories” about the personal lives of the actors sounds so familiar ala Larry Stylinson. It honestly sucks their actual personal lives are fucked and their profession are restricted.
For sure. I didn't mention it enough in this video, but the management companies definitely aren't free from fault. They surely can't be blind to the consequences (especially with certain artists themselves speaking out), but I guess the dollar signs are a higher priority. And yes! I mentioned it in another comment on here, but this video was originally meant to cover the broader ethics around real-life shipping, with Markiplier/JackSepticEye and Larry Stylinson being my two case studies. I miiight do a follow up video on this maybe, since the phenomenon (for Stylinson especially) is both as fascinating as it is scary.
Love teams nowadays are overrated.. but yes it's still one of the most effective and lucrative in marketing artists.. it goes back years ago like rico yan and claudine barretto, jerico rosales and christine hermosa. It's true what they say, one of the fastest ways to fame is to have a love team.. one example of that is liza soberano, very few know she was once the third will between kathniel love team tv series (got to believe), no one recognizes her(unless they search for it) until she got a love team with Enrique gil.. without love team, your the third wheel.. i believe the same goes for Enrique gil with kathniel in the tv series "princess and I" .. one example of this is Diether Ocampo . He was always the third wheel between love team rico yan and Claudine Barreto and love team jericho rosales and christine hermosa. And with this comment, realizing I'm old... 🤣🤭
Haha yes - I saw that Enrique was actually paired with another actress before he hit a winning formula with Liza! It would be interesting to see our industry mix and match love team partners more - maybe this could further relieve the ongoing fan obsession of the same two actors _always_ having to play each other's romantic leads.
This reminds me of t.A.T.u. When I knew they were not a real couple it broke my heart. Now it only breaks my heart that two young women were basically coerced into a fake relationship to make executives more bucks.

From inside information from friends in the industry (and have been in love teams before)….they say roughly 90% of love teams are fictional and all for marketing. As for what I think of ‘Love Teams’….yeah not for me, too corny and cheesy
Yep, our industry has this tendency to hire "mestiza" (foreign looking, typically Eurocentric) artists because they believe the look sells better. It's fed into some pretty colorist standards of beauty that still pervades the culture today (there is a very prevalent obsession with looking "whiter", more caucasian). Apparently Nadine Lustre, who I mentioned in the video, initially faced discrimination in showbiz for having a darker skin tone... so yeah, it's a problem.
Just asking to understand: when Filipino audiences see movies from US or Japan do they assume that those actors are dating as well? And how are love triangles viewed?
Since the reel-to-real romance trend is less of an expectation in those countries, I don't think so. They may ship some in real life but I feel it's much less of a thing than it is with actual Filipino "love team" actors, where they specifically put on the image of "actually dating". The love triangle thing is interesting though. They've definitely done this in Philippine media but I've yet to look into how love team fans would typically perceive this (particularly those who've formed a parasocial attachment).
Depends really on how Western artists portray their relationships. Like for example, Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez. It was pretty established & publicized. It wasn't just Filipinos and Americans reacting to their breakup but all their fans around the world. But in a cases like Emma Watson & Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright & Daniel Radcliffe, Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdam, etc. there onscreen romance was not paraded around off screen, so Filipinos don't really assume they're dating in real life. However, there are cases now with younger generation shipping co-actors together in these weird unhinged TikToks. There are still Filipino actors & actresses who have onscreen romances but we dont think or assume are dating in real life at all. Like that movie where an actor named Empoy & Alessandra De Rosi (idk if im spelling that right), although the onscreen romance was so real and wildly shipped, they never really actually shipped the actual actor & actress together.
I’ve never heard of love teams before watching this video, but it kinda seems like career steroids. You do this incredibly unnatural thing that massively boosts your popularity initially, but there’s a myriad of inevitable consequences waiting for you in the future.
What If one of the love team is exposed as crook, a nonce, abusive, or just a dick? Say, he’s caught stealing stuff from the set and selling it to fans, how would that affect the Love Team?
I'm aroace and honestly find romance movies/plots anywhere from acceptable (if they also are friends), to boring, to outright repulsive 😅. But I remember my cousins shipping stars like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens as well as Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Interpreting everything as a sign of their "eternal love". Love teams, to me, sounds like a terrible idea. Making an artificial codependency and a heavy burden on the people involved. What if one was abusive to the other and they had to pretend nothing was wrong? Also, before I started watching, were there apparently very aggressive Emile/Chuggaaconroy and Jon/ProtonJon shippers watching the Runaway Guys. Some of them even sent death threats to Jon's girlfriend and later wife Reese/Lucahjin. I remember one not exactly coming with death threats but still "but Emile and Jon are perfect for each other! I don't hate Lucah, but she and Jon are more like a brotp to me"... Um... That's not for you to decide! Which is why I think that in some years, proshipping will be declared a mental illness 😅 Yes there are some people I think could make each other happy. There's two streamers I watch who like similar games, have similar humor, and both are really kind, are around the same age, and looking for a partner. But... They aren't asking for my help and frankly it's none of my business. They're both strangers to me, so I have no right to tell them what to do.
I am actually fine with love teams One of my favorite love teams are another unexpected pair from an afternoon soap opera Ken Chan and Rita Daniela of My Special Tatay Fun Fact: Rita Daniela was supposed to be an antagonist who, like most soap operas, will give Ken Chan a living hell. But unexpectedly, Ken Chan's cute dialogues and funny way to court her give fans some "Kilig". Turning Rita Daniela from an antagonist to a "Tsundere" type of supporting character to now the leading lady that slowly begins to fall for Ken Chan On the other hand Arra San Agustin, the supposed to be the leading lady, now became the supporting character that kinda gave Ken Chan some sort of Desicion making to do in the end So popular that a new Rom Com series, now Rita is the main character, also paired her with Ken Chan Unlike most fans who stick with the same partner, I enjoyed experimentation with pairing, which will work and not, like Rita & Ken BTW, You visited the Ph Ana? Also, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, and Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey (who were having an affair IRL even though he was married).

Weirdly enough, I think it comes from the same play of gaining audiences. Specifically audiences that crave (romantic) connection. Instead of an "established" couple, the potential connection is between the celeb and the fan.
True! I would say they're two sides of the same coin though; fans would still likely obsess over these performers' dating choices once word _does_ get out about their potential romantic relationships.

I´m from Mexico, and while we don´t have love teams, there is a huge trend of politicians marrying telenovela actresess and or influencers. This marriages strangely tend to end as soon as they leave office
As someone who's aromantic and very honestly does not care at all about romance this is fascinating in a "I feel like a martian studying earthlings" sort of way because... man, I don't understand this at all.
I'm also a firm believer that actors and performers deserve their privacy and do not care to know about their personal lives. I'd much rather just know that they enjoyed working on the projects that I enjoyed watching, and see them talking about said projects. Personal lives are personal. So that this is even a thing is just "... why?" on so many levels to me and I feel bad for the people whose profession leaves them trapped in these sorts of situations.
Very much agree with entertainers deserving their privacy like everyone else, and I wouldve thought this was common knowledge 'cause like... they're just doing a job like the rest of us. Sadly we live in a world of celebrity worship, and this particular industry literally encourages and profits off that very behaviour. It's sad, and I fail to fully understand the mindset behind it all myself.

Cruz and Geronimo came from other love team tandems themselves before they were paired up, and Geronimo's initial - and main - claim to fame is her singing. But yes, good point - not all are equal in the love team fluidity landscape apparently. Cruz and Geronimo are two examples of fans accepting their more "fluid" assignments.

As for John Lloyd and Sarah Geronimo, they actually had 4(?) movies together following the success of one rom-com where their chemistry became a hit. You could say they were an anomaly in the whole landscape of love teams though, since as @TypeVertigo pointed out - love team "fluidity" isn't exactly distributed evenly.
I discovered Filipino movies a couple years and the concept of ‘love teams’ was so weird to me but I was still stuck in by it 😂 I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them besides the toxic fans. They remind me of BL shippers, which is why I avoid those communities now.

I actually was featured on a Pinoy romcom called "On the wings of Love". I drew a caricature of the lead actors Nadine and James on their date scene filmed at Pier 39 in San Francisco . It was interesting watching their interactions . The Nadine hit James when he tried to peek at the drawing.😅

@@ana-isabel The production company was filming in San Francisco that week. They came to Pier 39 to shoot and the director came to the caricature booth I managed . They asked to purchase a couple caricature and wanted to film the artist illustrating Nadine and James. Since I was the best dood there that day I took the order. They came later that day and set up the scene at our stand and I just drew them as normal. I didn't think I was actually going to be in the show but I was on camera for like 7 minutes. I did the drawing, stopped filming, paid for the drawing and they told me the episode wouldn't air until May that year (filmed it in February) so I forgot about my appearance. May, rolls by and I was playing worship at a pinoy church . After church we had dinner and all the girls started saying " Brother Brandon's a TV star!" I was like huh? Oh yeah the show premiered on TFC. That was funny but, that Monday and months after , Phillipeano folks mobbed our caricature stand and wanted to get drawn/take pictures with me because of the show.
First off, welcome back to the Tube of You. This is what I enjoy about your content Ana, you can take a subject I am totally unaware of, and make it interesting. The funniest thing might have been the moment of Skype nostalgia.😆 I've seen this sort of rabid fandom pop up in numerous areas outside of the Philippines, music fans who get wound up because their favourite band isn't wearing the same outfits as they did 5 years ago, or aren't writing the same style music as they did 5 years ago, or aren't playing their old music live anymore. Instead of supporting the artists in their actual artistic direction and growth, they mostly express the wish to control the way they look or what they perform. Fans get attached to the stage persona and ignore the fact that there are vital individuals behind those stage persona. Toxic fandom pops up all over the place in a toxic society. Another enjoyable video Ana, your presentation was again well considered and confidently delivered.

I think general fan entitlement sadly pervades entertainment cultures across the globe due to the commodification of celebrities and public figures. They become just as much a product as their art through stage personas and brand imaging, and invested audiences (often subconsciously) attach to a rigid idea of how they should look, act, and feel. It's toxic for sure, and definitely isn't limited to the Philippines - though love teams are certainly a concentrated instance of this culture.

Marvel and the latest issue they are facing with Johnathan Majors and the assault allegations. Do they let it play out or will they jettison him before it is a PR issue? I's really nice to see this topic finally get a really good, in-depth analysis, top shelf stuff. I remember that AlDub was everywhere back in 2015, every girl in class were swooning.
I think people just starved for connection and relationship (covid and increased social anxiety may had something to do with it), so living it vicariously relievs some of that loneliness. Where it gets weird for me - is when fans ship streamers and internet content makers (some of whom are underage). That's just too much. Not to mention, that they don't have any publishers or companies to protect them, and have very young and very vocal fanbases. So maybe it could be an interesting topic to dive into! :)

Born in Canada so only really absorbed love teams by proxy but will never forget how OBSESSED the titas at the family parties were. Also I too wasn't exempt from the random shipping/pairing with other people when it came to family parties lol; my relatives aren't actually all that into love teams, but man, it's _everywhere_ in the media back home.
It's cool to see the indies in the Filipino entertainment industry dabble into other genres besides the typical rom-com stuff, so hopefully we'll see these types of films gain a bit more traction (especially with the rise of streaming services)!

Great essay. Really hits home, this one. Perhaps growing up overseas lets one decide more easily that such love team content is not for them, but it definitely takes a bit of defiance and/or a "whatever" attitude to think the same way if you grew up in the thick of it.

What you're saying is true. I'm from the Philippines, I grew up here and never have lived anywhere else in my 27 years on this planet other than this country.
I grew up not really knowing much about love teams because I was privileged enough to have cable, while the majority of my peers did not. It made me feel out of place when they talked about their fave love teams from ABSCBN and I could never relate.
This kind of media stunt is designed for the masses. I dont know if I call myself lucky for not being part of the mass which this thing appeals to, but really I still don't get it and I feel bad for these actors & actresses for having to keep up relationships they don't really want to be in just for the sake of keeping the fans happy. 🙁
Not my usual topic of interest but I am fascinated with how the differences of how these fans could perceive information from media. From what I've observed, Filipinos have an extremely strong family centered culture and that could focus the attention on the unit rather then supporting the individual success. I can see how one would feel trapped when the whole country is watching and expecting.

Interesting link! Though I feel like it may be less our family-centric values and moreso decades of our entertainment industry fostering a highly profitable culture of "kilig" (romantic giddiness). Love teams thus become products that offer this in concentrated amounts, and viewers start to see them less as individual artists with unique talents to give and more as units that can provide an endless stream of kilig-induced dopamine.

The gay love teams thing is interesting to me because on one side, it's great that the lgbt people are being welcomed into such a big part of the popular culture but on the other..it's a very toxic part of it. Like, it shouldn't be lgbt people getting more love teams, but rather both the existing lgbt and heterosexual love teams should be dying out and the lgbt should just be accepted in everyday life.
But I don't know, I'm a heterosexual guy with an aversion to all types of shipping celebrities or any irl person for that matter (I'm not Filipino, but you can find these behaviors pretty much everywhere), so maybe it's a matter of perspective.
No I definitely agree; if I'm being completely honest I do feel like the whole "love team" concept is worn out at this point, and our entertainment industry could fare a lot better without it. Though realistically I feel like it's here to stay for a long while, and it's at least nice to see them start giving non-hetero relationships the spotlight too.

Lucky for me, I never really had to be fed this type of media given I was in a higher privilege than most, we could afford cable back then, so instead of watching Teleseryes & Telenovelas in which these love teams were blasting, I was watching Western Cartoons. But for most people in this country, it is the kind of entertainment that is attainable by the masses, therefore, it is the media that sells a lot. It is the only type of media that influences majority of the population (especially the younger ones).

I'll always maintain that shipping real people is off-limits unless it's an obvious joke (like "shipping" Seagal and Putin). As an outsider, I don't get the appeal of Love Teams at all, but then again I'm not the target audience. It's super obviously highly manufactured guff to inflate interest in these celebrities so they can sell more merchandize and media. I'd be okay with it if people were "in on the joke" (like how wrestling fans know it's all manufactured but pretend that it's real), but people take this stuff way too seriously and forget that they're actual real people with real lives.
Exactly! It teeters into pretty dangerous territory, and I can only feel bad for the artists subjected to it (many of whom likely entered the industry for the sake of pursuing a craft, only to find themselves roped into this marketing ploy).

The way this entire system is just about identical to Thai Koojin is kind of wild. I wonder if one influenced the other?
The only difference I noticed is that members of a koojin arent really prevented from acting with other actors...they just have to keep doing events/fanmeets/concerts with their most popular pairing. (Yaya and Nadech are one of the most popular examples of this, though they finally admitted to being really together.)

This isn’t in anyway to wipe off the accountability of the shippers for being entitled, but I also think that the media going out of their way to make that ship marketable should at least shoulder some of the responsibility. At the very least lighting the flames of the passion that people have for the ship.
The “conspiracy theories” about the personal lives of the actors sounds so familiar ala Larry Stylinson. It honestly sucks their actual personal lives are fucked and their profession are restricted.
For sure. I didn't mention it enough in this video, but the management companies definitely aren't free from fault. They surely can't be blind to the consequences (especially with certain artists themselves speaking out), but I guess the dollar signs are a higher priority.
And yes! I mentioned it in another comment on here, but this video was originally meant to cover the broader ethics around real-life shipping, with Markiplier/JackSepticEye and Larry Stylinson being my two case studies. It's true what they say, one of the fastest ways to fame is to have a love team.. one example of that is liza soberano, very few know she was once the third will between kathniel love team tv series (got to believe), no one recognizes her(unless they search for it) until she got a love team with Enrique gil.. without love team, your the third wheel.. i believe the same goes for Enrique gil with kathniel in the tv series "princess and I" .. one example of this is Diether Ocampo . He was always the third wheel between love team rico yan and Claudine Barreto and love team jericho rosales and christine hermosa.

Haha yes - I saw that Enrique was actually paired with another actress before he hit a winning formula with Liza! It would be interesting to see our industry mix and match love team partners more - maybe this could further relieve the ongoing fan obsession of the same two actors _always_ having to play each other's romantic leads.

Yep, our industry has this tendency to hire "mestiza" (foreign looking, typically Eurocentric) artists because they believe the look sells better. It's fed into some pretty colorist standards of beauty that still pervades the culture today (there is a very prevalent obsession with looking "whiter", more caucasian). Apparently Nadine Lustre, who I mentioned in the video, initially faced discrimination in showbiz for having a darker skin tone... so yeah, it's a problem.

Just asking to understand: when Filipino audiences see movies from US or Japan do they assume that those actors are dating as well? And how are love triangles viewed?
Since the reel-to-real romance trend is less of an expectation in those countries, I don't think so. They may ship some in real life but I feel it's much less of a thing than it is with actual Filipino "love team" actors, where they specifically put on the image of "actually dating".
The love triangle thing is interesting though. They've definitely done this in Philippine media but I've yet to look into how love team fans would typically perceive this (particularly those who've formed a parasocial attachment).
Depends really on how Western artists portray their relationships.
Like for example, Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez. It was pretty established & publicized. It wasn't just Filipinos and Americans reacting to their breakup but all their fans around the world.
But in a cases like Emma Watson & Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright & Daniel Radcliffe, Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdam, etc. there onscreen romance was not paraded around off screen, so Filipinos don't really assume they're dating in real life. However, there are cases now with younger generation shipping co-actors together in these weird unhinged TikToks.
There are still Filipino actors & actresses who have onscreen romances but we dont think or assume are dating in real life at all. Like that movie where an actor named Empoy & Alessandra De Rosi (idk if im spelling that right), although the onscreen romance was so real and wildly shipped, they never really actually shipped the actual actor & actress together.

I'm aroace and honestly find romance movies/plots anywhere from acceptable (if they also are friends), to boring, to outright repulsive 😅. But I remember my cousins shipping stars like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens as well as Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Interpreting everything as a sign of their "eternal love". Love teams, to me, sounds like a terrible idea. Making an artificial codependency and a heavy burden on the people involved. What if one was abusive to the other and they had to pretend nothing was wrong? Also, before I started watching, were there apparently very aggressive Emile/Chuggaaconroy and Jon/ProtonJon shippers watching the Runaway Guys. Some of them even sent death threats to Jon's girlfriend and later wife Reese/Lucahjin. I remember one not exactly coming with death threats but still "but Emile and Jon are perfect for each other! I don't hate Lucah, but she and Jon are more like a brotp to me"... Um... That's not for you to decide! Which is why I think that in some years, proshipping will be declared a mental illness 😅
Yes there are some people I think could make each other happy. There's two streamers I watch who like similar games, have similar humor, and both are really kind, are around the same age, and looking for a partner. But... They aren't asking for my help and frankly it's none of my business. They're both strangers to me, so I have no right to tell them what to do.

One of my favorite love teams are another unexpected pair from an afternoon soap opera
Ken Chan and Rita Daniela of My Special Tatay
Fun Fact: Rita Daniela was supposed to be an antagonist who, like most soap operas, will give Ken Chan a living hell. But unexpectedly, Ken Chan's cute dialogues and funny way to court her give fans some "Kilig".
Turning Rita Daniela from an antagonist to a "Tsundere" type of supporting character to now the leading lady that slowly begins to fall for Ken Chan
On the other hand Arra San Agustin, the supposed to be the leading lady, now became the supporting character that kinda gave Ken Chan some sort of Desicion making to do in the end
So popular that a new Rom Com series, now Rita is the main character, also paired her with Ken Chan
Unlike most fans who stick with the same partner, I enjoyed experimentation with pairing, which will work and not, like Rita & Ken

Sometimes, love teams wear out their welcome, fren @ana-isabel . Yah, it has been toxic at times. I've lost faith in PH love teams since the 90s, unless it's purely organic.
