It's so awesome how appa's original design at 1:14 is reused in The Legend of Korra as Korra's polar bear dog.
That's the first thing I thought as well!
It really was, I missed that part and holy crap. They really dug out some old concepts for Korra. I love that.
Korra's pet looks like it's about to say "Ed..ward" to me
Excuse me, my siblings do know how to bend! They bend my finger all the time!
That detail about making your character designs with the awareness that someone ELSE down the line will be drawing that character and so it needs to be efficient, is just so darn good! Mind blowingly good. Never thought of character designing like this.
As a composer myself, this reminds me of what my professors teach us about writing music for live musicians. Make it something that -- while not saying it needs to be only be easy music -- it should be easy to moderately easy to play. Repetition is key for us in the music world too.
Less is better for animation
@@Silencer796 Simplicity is also just more iconic.
bro what is this aspect ratio? does this even count as a short?
I think its a compilation of different shorts packaged together
"Mom can we get Prince Zuko?"
"No, we have Zuko at home"
Zuko at home - 2:55
I studied animation. Among the many classes I studied character design and I learned that rarely the first design is the definitive one. It's quite common for a character to go through two or three redesigns before entering production.
oh yes please do more concept vs final products for animation and talk about why they went with certain creative choices.
1:49 I can understand why they changed Appa, but gods i love that first look, the horns, his big nose and his overall shape... 💖
To be fair, I think the fire Nation in general still kept a very Japanese style in most aspects. In my mind the Earth Kingdom was more chinese-inspired specially Ba Sing Se with it's great wall motif. Meanwhile you see the fire nation being a very industrial country, with a large emphasis on their vehicles and well... Firepower (pun intended), not to mention the imperialist WWII style, militarized education system, and the very kabuki-like theatre genre.
I do agree that if you simplify a classic Chinese armor design (like with Disney's original Mulan) you can get a distinct plated armor style that "could" share a close look to a samurai style armor. But the fire nation armor itself is all around its own thing, combining aspects of various cultures. For example, the helmets do share a lot of the stylization and décor, you'd find in a Chinese high ranking officer helmet, but the face plate (even though you could make an argument about samurai masks) is actually a much more modern and western design akin to a gas mask you'd see on a soldier or a stormtrooper (be it germans or star wars). Then the iconic shoulder pads and chest pieces (and probably those pointy tipped shoes) are apparently inspired by ancient Thai armor. On the other hand, the garbs worn by officials and royals seems to be a combination of a Japanese and Burnese design (the latter specially apparent when it comes the layered and ornamental design of the robes).
Don't forget the 3rd guy who brought the story elements together.
do we all agree Avatar is a perfect series?
Half of me says: there can never be a completely ‘perfect’ series, but the other half (out of childhood bias) says: Heck ya it’s a perfect series!!
no.
Ya
It’s nice but “perfect” is well ehh
Yes
I very much want to see more behind the scenes of the Avatar, I would like to make my own cartoon with a pretty close style, becausw it has perfect balance between cartoon style and realism
"Fire Nation were samurai, but when the rest of the show became more Chinese, they had to change that." Lmao. Good thing they did, otherwise it would have become rather controversial.
It would’ve been cool though since samurai are badass
@@MysteriousGhost378 Badass for sure. But Nanking… Unit 731… Japans reluctance to acknowledge its own history… etc.
The Book with these images and info and way more is called "Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series"
i love that bummy's floppy is based on thr original appa
I like this. You should make a video on Moana's Concept art. I saw some on IAMAG and it would be cool to see you tak=ling about it since you also talked about the water on another video.
the concept art is so expressive. all avatar ever needed was a bigger budget with the same animation style.
I LOVE seeing how animations are made
I WANT MORE CONCEPT ART PLS! 🤩
The thumbnail makes me a little sad that we never got a zuko with more ethnic features
This show is based off of anime and has people with impossible eye colors like golden for some Fire Nation people or blue eyes for people based off of the Indigenes of Far North, what did you expect?
This was a fascinating video! I'd love to see more concept art from Avatar
LOK definitely needed more collaboration
I had no idea Appa's original design was that of a dog that would eventually become Naga in Legend of Korra. Fascinating.
omg imagine being the young monk in the video and the best show is based on you! so cool!
"In animation, nothing comes out perfect".. um avatar's perfect sir.
more!! actually I'm intrastent in how to grow a studio team
growing up is realizing how much Koreans carried and influenced Avatar
There is tons of none anime-inspired shows that also involve Korean animators.
They are rather precious.
so cool!
masterpiece :D good one
I've been tinkering with a character in my head and drawings, the character began as a loud barbarian teenage girl, which is now a 13 year old boy with a rocket skateboard, things change a lot sometimes.
This did not need to be a vertical video.
i would have loved to see samurai zuko
Amazing.
the fact that they recicle the design of the polar bear dog in korra, for Naga.
2:52 looked like a fuse
If video games have taught me anything, it is that the best work comes from many iterations, and that is what is seen in Avatar, the designs and story were improved until it became the great show it is today.
Interesting
Why is the video cropped like rhat?
You should see my concept art! I'm embarrassed to admit that their mine sometimes XD
That aside, this is why 2D animation is so special! Limitations often create very interesting stories.
they didn't want to make Zuko in a samurai style because they didn't want it to seems like Japanese colonialism in Asia during World War 2, it could be controversial
the japanese imperialism aspect is still there with the warships, but yeah it's toned down
I def wanna see more, but the phone layout is... Bad. Still gonna sub though :3
Ah yes, Avatar.
umm... why is this is portrait mode? ew
I rather have more werid concept art of the animated series than watch the Netflix show that's been released now.
« Fire nation developed into Chinese style » - there is literally nothing Chinese about fire nation as it is based on Thailand and Indonesia.
Have you bothered to search the etymologies of several of their names and toponyms?
Yes, they have names from other languages as well but Chinese influence is strong.
Though the same could be said for Japanese with regards to the Fire Nation.
"concept art "and "boring" are not fitting in the same sentence
I'm watching this on desktop and this aspect ratio is so gross, I hate the tiktokification of the internet I stg,
Can you stop with the fucking vertical videos?
fr
It's pretty stupid, to be fair.
My thoughts exactly
Avatar is great because it wasn't 'too many chefs in the kitchen' it was just two dudes who built this world. When you see the writing rooms now for big franchises it's just one big activist freak show.
Good video, but annoying format. Just sayi'n.
Okay but- the only good actor in the live action so far is Katara
the live action was trash; i was so hyped on episode 1 but after is garbage
katara was bland af, sokka's actor was the best. sadly the script was rubbish so it doesn't show much.
I liked Avatar, but Katara was annoying. I mean, people agree with me. She was. She always thaught she knew better than everyone else
that's one of her character flaws
awful format, fully killed my interest in watching sadly
This didn't at all explain why you think the concept art is weird
