RODRIGO:
Ottien dunque da lui di partir per la Fiandra.
Taccia il tuo cor, - degna di te

In mezzo a gente oppressa a divenir un Re!
DON CARLO:
Ti seguirň, fratello.
RODRIGO:
(odesi il suono d'una campana):
Ascolta! il santo asil s'apre giŕ; qui verranno
Filippo e la Regina.
DON CARLO:
Elisabetta!
RODRIGO:
Rinfranca accanto a me lo spirto che vacilla!
Serena ancor tua stella in alto brilla.
Domanda al ciel dei forti la virtů!
DON CARLO E RODRIGO:
Dio che
nell'alma infondere
Amor volesti e speme,
Desio nel core accendere
Tu déi di libertŕ.
Giuriam insiem di vivere
E di morire insieme;
In terra, in ciel congiungere
Ci puň la tua bontŕ.
RODRIGO:
S'inoltrano.
DON CARLO:
Oh terror! Al sol vederla io tremo!
(Filippo, conducendo Elisabetta, appare in mezzo ai Frati.
Rodrigo s'č allontanato da Don Carlo che s'inchina
innanzi al Re cupo e sospettoso.
Egli cerca di frenar la sua emozione.
Elisabetta trasale nel riveder Don Carlo.
Il Re e la Regina si avanzano, e vanno
verso la cappella ov'é la tomba di Carlo V,
dinanzi alla quale Filippo s'inginocchia
per un istante a capo scoperto;
quindi prosegue il suo cammino colla Regina)
IL CORO
(di dentro nel mentre passa il Re):
Carlo il sommo imperatore
Non č piů che muta polve:
Del celeste suo fattore
L'alma altera or trema al pič.
RODRIGO:
Coraggio!
DON CARLO:
Ei la fe' sua! Sventura!
Io l'ho perduta!
RODRIGO:
Vien presso a me; piů forte il core avrai!

Insiem vivremo, e moriremo insieme!

Ils sont juste magnifiques , merci pour ce partage. Ces deux très grands artistes nous transportent au sommet de leur art … merci à eux .. Dimitri nous a quitté mais sa voix est immortelle … 💫
A Russian and a German singing in Italian and doing an incredible job, there must be a lesson here !

Splendid duet of Don Carlos and Rodrigo = from the opera “Don Carlos” by Giuseppe Verdi two talented representatives of opera music = Dmitry Hvorostovsky legendary opera singer = one of the brightest baritones of the Planet and Jonas Kaufman of one of the brightest European singers of the world stage. Virtuosity mastery of the two soloists = tenor and baritone fascinated the audience with their magnificent performance. Rodrigo calls upon Carlos to come to the aid of the Flemish rebels against Philip II. Carlos and Rodrigo take an oath to live and die together, swear eternal friendship and loyalty to the freedom of oppressed Flanders = and perform the famous duet "You, who sowed love in the hearts of people." And the farewell words of Rodrigo = “I am leaving with a light soul. Happy and proud that you are saved by me. May the homeland bloom with you. Goodbye Carlos ... I'm doomed. " Amazing! ... A wonderful orchestra with wonderful musicians with perfect technique and great playing under the guidance of Konstantin Orbelian = the best vocal conductor of our time. Triumphant success!

Merveilleux opéra de Verdi, magnifiquement interprété par deux artistes au sommet de leur art . L’un des deux a rejoint le Paradis des artistes le 7 novembre dernier jour de la Sainte Cécile, patronne des musiciens. Jonas Kaufmann est là pour nous consoler.❤️❤️❤️

Un ottimo tenore ma un grandissimo baritono, che purtroppo il destino ha stroncato troppo presto. Da appassionato di lirica ho video e opere di lui e ascolto tanti suoi brani, ma manca e non solo a me il suo timbro di voce, chiaro e potente.

I agree. Jonas is certainly a tenor, but very baritonal. It is not the best match contast-wise. But I like it.
If somebody says that DH can't sing Don Carlo, they are deaf. It is his signature role, he sang it three million times plus all concerts, galas and tributes. Heck, he won Cardiff with it!!!
He was brilliant at Cardiff. I watch that video regularly.

Hvorostovsky and Kaufman are equally balanced in this recording. That’s what makes it such a great duet from Don Carlo.

I was there when Hvorostovsky won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World with this and consider it the finest baritone sound I have ever encountered in live performance. I would go as far as to say he has been THE outstanding Italianate baritone of my life time (even including the wonderful, irreplaceable Tito Gobbi). Kaufmann is the equivalent among tenors and to hear these two together is beyond what we might dream of in human operatic art. The only fault I can find is that the microphone makes Kaufmann sound a bit under-powered next to H. This may be true, but the mikes could have adjusted. But this is a tiny nit pick. Jonas still has plenty of voice!
Where and when did you hear him? After Cardiff I heard him again in Geneva both in recital and in the opera house. On both occasions he was electrifying and his concert encore of "Cortigiani!" was huge in every sense.
For the Cardiff Singer I was fairly close but what struck one was the sheer size of the voice (as well as the extraordinary beauty and fabulous technique) compared with the other finalists, one of whom was the lovely Monica Groop. For the Geneva performances we were near the back. Perhaps his vocal stamina has diminished seriously since 2000
( I think I last heard him live around 2003) though his continued presence at the Met would suggest that he still has what is needed for that excessively large house.

A stunning example of great singing from both artists; my only complaint is that it is in the wrong language. Even so with such great artistry I will overlook the language issue

Now that San Francisco Opera has slipped into only hiring regional grade casts I expect to never have the opportunity to hear either of them live, But judging only by recordings like this one. These two as good as any who have ever sung - ever. I cite this on the authority of the greatest opera authority I know of - me.
