8 seemed to really love Super Circuit. Every track taken from the game (except Sky Garden) really felt like the developpers evolving the ideas of the original track without the limitations of the GBA keeping it down. From the y-axis used, to the remixes to stuff like Boo Lake having a lake, they really have set a bar for retro tracks. Sidenote: I think it's really cool that Ribbon Road has basically the same theme but in widely different styles and speeds making them somewhat indistinguishable.
One aspect I love a lot about ribbon road is that apart from matching color, the gameplay gimmicks of each section also match the toy castle you drive through. Red section has signs showing it's peach's castle, so it's the simplest and easiest with toads on the side. Green section is bowser's castle, so it has the enemies in the form of mechakoopas. And blue section is rosalina's castle, so it is anti-gravity, floating, and has wavy sections, like the galaxy games, or rainbow road.
GBA tracks always make the best retro tracks and I think the reason for this is because they are flat and outdated, but unlike SNES tracks they have very strong themes and interesting layouts that you can do a lot with and improve upon.
surprised that you didn't mention how the different sections of Ribbon Road are themed with the red ribbon having a Peach's Castle look, the green being Bowser's Castle, and the blue having a Rosalina/Galaxy aesthetic
Something cool about the ribbon road remake is that rather than being in one giant castle like area you go through multiple different castles throughout. It explains why there are mechakoopas on the green ribbon.
One concept for a level by level video could be comparing similar tracks in the game (i.e. Ninja Hideaway and Dragon Driftway, Cheep Cheep Beach and Dolphin Shoals, The Mario Circuits, etc.)
Yeah, GBA Sky Garden got the short end of the stick. Track Layout has been heavily simplified, and it has no anti-gravity in which, theme wise, would make perfect sense.
8:53 i have to agree with you on this. all though they did change the authentic they didn't change the look like they did ribbon road. i have to say that is what make ribbon road better is that it is the more detailed of two tracks. plus i haven't played the gba version of mk so i have only seen clips of the two tracks in various videos
I once told a friend about how good Cheese Land represents Mami Tomoe from Madoka Magica. She claims to be the cheese, and the chain chomps are there to represent her beheading
The GBA tracks (except sky garden) in general I feel so much an amazing job. But ribbon road was the absolute peak so far. I'm glad to see super circuit finally get the appreciation in the retro selection after being abused during the Wii and 7 era.
I prefer Ribbon Road, although I still don’t understand why Cheese Land is so hated. I understand they removed the moon aesthetic but it’s still a fun track with cool glider cuts
14:36 Not gonna lie man.. I do really like Shy Guy Beach in Wii, I think they translated it pretty well and the approach to the art while different makes it interesting enough to justify it being brought back. I still love the video though! I love both Cheese Land and Ribbon Road’s remakes a whole lot!
this type of level by level is significantly better than the level by levels of mario odyssey in my opinion, i think its because what you go through in the odyssey levels really doesn't seem to help through just how linear you make a mostly open world game instead of something as actually linear like this game i'd like to say tho, either way these videos are all still just genuinely funny and informative anyway
As someone who still enjoys Cheese Land, I can't in good spirit claim it to be a good retro track. The original track was meant to take place on a cheese planet, with an alien starry night background and an infestation of little Mousers. The Mario Kart 8 remake just turned it into a generic daytime desert theme, removed the Mousers, and decided to randomly add Chain Chomps since they had the asset leftover.
Not sure if you mentioned this but I love that the blocks in the ribbon road shortcut are also the same colors as the blocks lining the super circuit tracks.
Great analysis. I think Waluigi Stadium rivals Cheese Land and Ribbon Road in terms of its remake. The beautiful look and the added upper anti-gravity paths elevates the track to new levels.
When I saw Cheese Land and Ribbon Road in the DLC for Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, I almost thought that these were completely new courses. Cheese Land went through a noticeable change, from a lunar atmosphere to a cheesy desert. It's not one of my favorites, but the upgrades are appreciated. I have a soft spot for Ribbon Road in Super Circuit; the brightly colored background and catchy bitcrushed music wowed me upon first sight in 2005 and continue to captivate in 2023. Even so, 8 did a good job sprucing up the vibe by having Ribbon Road take place in a child's bedroom. The background is adorned with all sorts of Mario toys that would have been the envy of 6-year-old me. A pleasant Level by Level video, Mr. Odyssey Central.
Ribbon Road is def the better of the two imo, it feels completely knew while still paying homage to the original respectfully. I disagree with Cheese Land however, I personally prefer the parade of the whole ‘moon is cheese’ thing, and the removal of the mice and replacement with Chain Chomps doesn’t make much sense to me. Also the track lends itself to sandbagging (I think that’s what it’s called anyway), which I’m not that fond of with those 2 last minute shortcuts. I can see why ppl love it, but I’m more on the negative side personally. Still, another excellent watch, I love seeing other people’s views on things like these so I found it enjoyable, have a nice day to whoever reads this!
Fun fact: the red section in ribbon road is styled as a princess peaches castle or mushroom kingdom, the green section is styled as a bowers castle and the blue section is styled upon a rainbow road space theme. All you have to do is look at how the walls and entrances to each part to see why. It’s a fun detail that no one ever seems to notice or bring to attention. I adore ribbon road for this
As much as I like the Cheese Land remake, I definitely prefer the cheese moon aesthetic of the original. I think it would have worked really well with Mario Kart 8's anti gravity. It would've been really cool if the entire track was in anti gravity to fit the moon theme. I still definetly liked all the gameplay changes I just wish they kept the moon aesthetic
@@noahppinkrevail The greenish planet or moon as well as the stars gives it a space aesthetic. There are also flags reminiscent of the flag on the moon. The moon being made out of cheese is also a fanciful belief that appeared in fables and proverbs

8’s GBA Ribbon Road is probably my favorite track in the series, besides maybe RRWii. The aesthetic was nailed, the attention to detail is off the charts, the difficulty is perfect for the Bell cup, the shortcuts are risky but satisfying to pull off, and the pacing is wonderfully smooth. If it wasn’t for Neo Bowser City, Bell cup would have been my favorite cup in the series.
I’ve never played Super Circuit, so actually seeing the specific differences makes me appreciate the retro tracks a lot more for doing so much. However, now that I learned about the rats on Cheeseland I wish they were still here 😔😔
It’s pretty clear why the original retro tracks are better than the booster pack ones. The booster pack tracks are just basically taken from Mario Kart tour. When they originally made those retro tracks, because it’s a phone game they weren’t able to put in as much detail. Obviously Nintendo could have just actually re-made the tracks or atleast put in more details for the tracks when they get out on 8 deluxe, but they didn’t so…
I agree a lot but I think something important to point out is that tracks from games that are more similar to 8 have less opportunity to be changed. Mostly talking about courses from 3DS and wii, you can't really do a whole lot with them, so while they are "worse" in that they don't update the track as much, the track really couldn't be altered that much without fundamentally changing it. Other than very small sections like the moon given anti gravity.
Anyone who says the original version of ribbon road are probably the same people that say "the original one is always better no matter what" Also known as Blinded by nostalgia
Fun fact: A small colony of mammoths survived on Wrangle Island, a small island way up in the arctic. There were as many as 1,000 mammoths living on the island up until around 1650 BC. This is nearly 1,000 years after the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza
I’m glad they chose to reserve the bigger GBA retros for the next game so they can get glow-ups akin to Ribbon Road and Cheese Land over the limitations of the BCP. Lakeside Park, Broken Pier, and BC4 are all definitely being saved
I hope Mario Kart 9 gives us GBA Bowser Castle 4 which would be completely different from the original like these tracks are. That track is so big it could even be turned into a 1 lap track
@R S J Bowser Castle 4 is so unsettling. You're just in this giant rook with a high ceiling and no windows or anything. And then the room is filled with tons of lava and giant industrial gates and 2 giant glowing balls with Bowser's face on them with tons of cables going into then going around the whole room. This track in particular would be so great with a glowup to see the background better and see what the devs do with it
these 2 track is literally the reason why i wanted SNES and GBA tracks to be a high priority to became retro tracks than the ones in DS, Wii, or 7, with enough creativity these tracks can be soo good that it could be a brand new track on it's own now, can we have justice for Sunset Wilds and Sky Garden
Odyssey Central I hope GBA - Bowser's Castle 4 comes to Wave 4 because this retro track can really work by changing the Track with some elevations (like they did with Cheese Land, Ribbon Road, Snowland and Boo Lake). They can also change some parts of Track with Anti Gravity, adding spin boosters and a flying section. And also they can add electric zappers, Mecha Koopas and lava Geysers for this New remake version. 🙂 [Opinion] - And Please Nintendo make a great layer that we can finally see Bowser's Core... 🥺🙏
Cheeseland is my favorite track in the whole game. It's trickier to navigate than any of the Rainbow Roads and its music is the whole reason I bought a soundbox.
You forgot about the shortcut in the original version of Cheese Land where if you turn left on the second jump and go over the wall there are some ramps to bounce off of
Like N64 Kalimari Desert and DS Peach Gardens, there is potential for GBA tracks to have the Lap change gimmick from Tour. Most particularly Bowser Castle 4 and Rainbow Road. If BC4 wasn't hectic enough in terms of Track layout, imagine adding even more extra turns that lead to new routes. For RR, instead of the narrow path being a faster route, have that part branch into a new path and have you drive backwards into the final lap.
Me personally i feel like the booster course pass makes retro tracks in the same vain as ds and wii (the era of mariokart i grew up with, moreso wii). Seeing as they feel Very authentic, like the tracks are from their original hardware, but in a new engine
Sky garden gets remade. They took out almost everything that made it interesting. Boo lake and snow land get remade. There incredible glow ups that managed to go beyond amazing. Sky garden
Yeah ever since Mario kart 8 GBA tracks have been honestly the best retros, it’s sad that both of these courses are heavily slept on, since they’re so good. Really makes me wonder how much they’d be different if they came out in the Tour/BCP style, and Vise Versa with the Tour/BCP GBA retros in the MK Original style!
I’m seriously hoping Airship Fortress is the last DS course too honestly. It’s got too much going for it to not be included. Also hoping DK Mountain is one of the 4 GCN tracks too.
@@Wondergayea113 I kinda wholeheartedly disagree with that. I was looking at every track in Tour that had the potential to be in 8 Deluxe and really DK Mountain has a solid chance of being included even if DK Summit is also added which I think it will too due to the leaks. Do I overthink things on rather unimportant life topics yeah I kinda do..
A wise man once said “If thou makes a video about the best, he must follow it up with a video about the worst so both ends are covered”. My personal pick for the worst is GCN Dry Dry Desert since Nintendo can’t seem to make good GCN remakes, and also because it’s not “dry” anymore with the oasis added in.
I honestly don't understand the hate towards Sky Garden they literally hate it for the exact reason why they love others: It changed. Why is it so bad lmao The GBA tracks had some really creative theme, cheese and ribbon are two really fun theming. So remaking them to live up to today's standards, these are gonna be some of the most memerable tracks in the franchise.
With Sky Garden it's changing the layout and design in a way that worsens the track for many people. The layout changes end up too simplified where the challenge of the original is taken out and is too simplified. While there are some cool additions (like going under the beanstalk shortcut) it doesn't have enough to replace the fun factor of driving in the original the original. Then the design aspect is ruined by replacing the path from the iconic mossy road and yellow clouds to a eh brown brick road and plain white clouds. Overall it doesn't stand out much, especially when a similar track like Cloudtop Cruise has tons of elements that were used in the 8/Tour version of Sky Garden (White Clouds, a short cut across leafs, bouncing on a platform, beanstalk), Alongside the fact that Cloudtop Cruise implements them much better and still has tons of extra cool stuff like driving on an Airship or dodging lightning.
Koopa Cape's remake in Mario Kart Tour was hated for simply having orange cliffs. If you ever say you prefer MKT's Koopa Cape to the original, be prepared for hate from Wii stans. (They did the exact same to Rock Rock Mountain, but no one complained.)
@@harrybest2041 I will say I easily prefer the grey cliffs of Rock Rock Mountain (as the orange feels like it ruins the naturalist feel of the original), but I don't mind the orange cliffs of Koopa Cape too much from just checking a quick video on it. Honestly I would say 3DS was the worst remake of Koopa Cape, mainly for being the culprit of removing the glass tunnel sections with electric spinners and water current, replacing it with a boring underwater section. At least Tour (despite removing the fun Koopa Sign pointing down) did some good stuff like a great starting line and a cool trick ramp that makes you go above water during the dull underwater section.
I hate playing cheese land In mk8dx. I just find that not only do I not enjoy the layout too much, but the road just feels horrible to drive on for me. @@Odyssey_CentralUmmmm actually I don’t have a dad ( he went to get chokey milk ) so I don’t know what that means, so HA checkmate 🤓🤓🤓
@@Odyssey_CentralI’ll defend you
bro forgot the tierlist 💀
Cheese Land appreciation you love to see it 🙏🙏🙏
Riverside Park is really good, maybe you should update this vid when we finally get to play it
9:56 ok, this isn’t a reference to The Little Panda Fighter, that was a reference to Kung Fu Panda. You should totally watch it it’s great.
My brother is going to be so mad at him.
2:53 How dare you!!!! Desert Hills is a fun track, as are most of the desert themed tracks.
7:06 This shortcut is still worthy if you do it shroomless, because it cuts a bit chunk of the track it can Boost from 4th to 1st without mushrooms.#🧀
I still wish that Ribbon Road was kept closer to the original (music, track layout, etc)
1:06 made my jaw drop, how did you survive
I’d be terrified if I made a Mario Kart track in my bedroom and tiny Chris Pratt and the gang just started racing on it while I was gone.
2:51, I’d like to say I am a proud desert hills fan
I never thought there was anyhing above a desert hills enjoyer.
Now dry dry ruins on the other hand Woo-ee!
Imagine the tears of fans if desert hills gets added to the booster course pass
Yeah ever since Mario kart 8 GBA tracks have been honestly the best retros, it’s sad that both of these courses are heavily slept on, since they’re so good. Really makes me wonder how much they’d be different if they came out in the Tour/BCP style, and Vise Versa with the Tour/BCP GBA retros in the MK Original style!
my hopes for the next waves or Mario Kart 9 are Sunset Wilds and Lakeside Park. They would look so good
Sunset wilds is leaked for wave 5. So tour graphics hopefully upgraded a lot
I’m already desperate for wave 4 to release, I’m hoping for Airship Fortress if there’s another DS track, and some goddamn Double Dash tracks
I absolutely agree
There's one last ds track in wave 4 and I think it will be airship fortress
I’m seriously hoping Airship Fortress is the last DS course too honestly. It’s got too much going for it to not be included. Also hoping DK Mountain is one of the 4 GCN tracks too.
@@rebirthphoenix5646 I don't think Dk mountain will be included since Dk summit was not only appears in the leaks, but is too similar to it
@@Wondergayea113 I kinda wholeheartedly disagree with that. I was looking at every track in Tour that had the potential to be in 8 Deluxe and really DK Mountain has a solid chance of being included even if DK Summit is also added which I think it will too due to the leaks. Do I overthink things on rather unimportant life topics yeah I kinda do..
Especially Ribbon Road. How did it go from sky level to kid room?
A wise man once said “If thou makes a video about the best, he must follow it up with a video about the worst so both ends are covered”.
My personal pick for the worst is GCN Dry Dry Desert since Nintendo can’t seem to make good GCN remakes, and also because it’s not “dry” anymore with the oasis added in.
I think they should have kept earth in cheese land
I would love to live in cheese land. Although living in ribbon road would just mean I become tiny so that would suck.
I honestly don't understand the hate towards Sky Garden they literally hate it for the exact reason why they love others: It changed. Why is it so bad lmao
The GBA tracks had some really creative theme, cheese and ribbon are two really fun theming.
The amount of bumps and craters means that on 200cc (which is what I always play on), no matter how well I turn, the road always sends my drift sliding around everywhere. Ribbon road is cool tho
