Spy Hunter - You need missiles to destroy the helicopter. Also, if you go far enough, a bridge will be out, so you drive through a boat house and your car transforms into a boat.

My dad grew up in arcades these games were prevalent and told many stories about his and watching others. He really loved Joust and I remember he often could get a decent bit further in the game than I ever did. I preferred the physics of Balloon fight. Defender I remember had a lot of depth I struggled to get to as the skill gap is pretty unforgiving. A old quarter eater back in the day.

The Atari 2600 version of defender had far less visual clutter and was easier to tell projectiles from debris.

FINALLY SNOWBOARD KIDS 2, I THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.
Best soundtrack of any N64 game fite me, the game can be a little clunky but man do those race track OST's hit so damn hard
Also, you can parry items by doing tricks which makes for fun skill check moments rather than mario kart blue or red shell moments where you just eat asphalt for not having the proper counter item (which are also a backup here)

    • @colemcgrath644
      @colemcgrath644 23 дня назад +1

@ThatOneDude219 if you like mario kart then 100% and like I said it has a cool feature where instead of just being forced to eat red shells or whatever items thrown at you, you can skill parry by doing a "trick" flip or twirl and send it right back to the dude who shot at you and they can do the same although it gets faster each time it's parried.
It's such a simple but cool feature that makes it not feel like you get punished for simply getting bad rng in a cart racer.
The controls leave room to be desired and can be clunky at times because of the 3 stats for the snowboards "speed" "handling" and "tricks" which handling becomes a major factor because not having enough will have you crashing everywhere.
Later boards are better for all rounders or good split stats but early on always go for handling as you can make up for speed by blasting enemies yourself with items or using one of the maps many shortcuts you find
Also like I said earlier too, 20/10 soundtrack

I think my dad picked it up at the local game store but given that I had more free time than him, I played lots of it. it provided so much replayability because of the options menus where you could tweak all the parameters for the games as if they were real arcade cabs. Joust was me and my dad's favorite game to play together. He was really good at Defender and Tapper too, most of these were games he used to play in the arcades in college. lots of good memories with this game. the voice lines in sinistar used to terrify me, that was one of the only games I never really played much of, but I remember getting decent at spy hunter.

Retro games on the N64 feel a bit like a bad idea. The dpad is nice and big but the button layout is really only good for the game of games you expect to play on the N64. Still, arcade and vintage game collections were starting to take off and the N64 needed some of that action. Next console generation on the Xbox and PS2 would feature the best collection of Midway games released with Midway Arcade Treasures and this could be considered the grandfather of that.

SBK2 was one of my first N64 games and actually a reason I wanted the console. My brother and I took our personal meta on that game so far.
      1) we both use the Star Board because it's the "best" outside the broken ones like the Dragon and Hi-Tech Boards which we banned because they're not much fun
      2) He uses Linda (faster) and I use Slash (better turning)
      3) I move up to using Tommy (faster than Linda)
      4) He hits the incredible breakthrough of Tommy on the Charm Board instead of the Star Board (slows him down a little but if you can get into the lead and sit on an invisibility there is nothing that can stop you since neither ghost nor pan B-items can affect you)
      5) I start doing B-button "fakeouts" with the pans to make him waste his invisibility so I can hit him when he becomes vulnerable again
      6) Eventually I have to move up to Mr. Dog on the Star Board because even though his turning is trash he moves so fast I can sometimes pull comebacks through the Charm plus invisibility buffer
It was crazy. I think we hit relative equilibrium with his choice being Tommy on Charm Board and me with Mr. Dog on Star Board. He still wins a little more often but I can usually make a game of it.
Moral of the story, don't sleep on the Charm Board, it is secretly amazing in high-level PvP on SBK2 and maybe the best of the non-broken boards.

@@YourPalJamieEllis Number 5 is genius! Man those pans were such a rush of dopamine when you see that icon pop up. 2 player was always so much fun. I love racing for the ski lift, then seeing you or your team mate smack into the wall.

Shit I'm 36 years old and I can still remember the name of the kid in my class who managed to get to the part of Spy Hunter where the car turns into a boat.

There are levels in spy hunter. You were probably going too slow. I know eventually you get missiles to take out helicopters and at some point you get a speed boat. You are supposed to be like James Bond trying to escape bad guys. Also you need the music.
