- "Le Boudin"
French lyrics/English translation
Français/Anglais paroles
---
"Le Boudin" is a reference to boudin, a type of blood sausage or black pudding. Le boudin colloquially meant the gear (rolled up in a blanket) that used to be carried atop the backpacks of Legionnaires.
While the tune was composed prior to the Legion's departure for Mexico in the 1860s the lyrics were progressively composed after the Franco-Prussian War, since Alsatians and Lorrains flocked to the legion after these regions were annexed by Germany. The song makes also repeated reference to the fact that the Belgians are "lazy shirkers", this comes from the fact that the King of the Belgians, who wished to remain neutral in the Franco-German conflict, asked the French government to not commit the Belgian Legionnaires into the conflict. France agreed to this request and the Belgian Legionnaires remained in French Algeria (the Legion's home), to the dismay of the rest of the Legionnaires. This is why the song says that there's no blood sausage (boudin) for the Belgians. The song also mentions the Swiss who constituted the most important foreign contingent of the Legion in the 1870s.
The song relates the feat of arms of the Legion in Tuyen Quang (1884-1885) and in Camerone (1863), the date of which (April 30) is celebrated as the Legion's anniversary.
---

"Le Boudin" of the Legion song is NOT a "blood sausage" but the sleeping gear rolled as a sausage that legionnaires carry at war. Regarding the Belgians - who cannot have the boudin anymore, according to the song - it could come from the Franco Prussian war; Belgium being a neutral country no Belgian participated to the war alongside the French legionnaires. By the way, It is time to underline that we, French people, have nothing against our Belgian friends :) Vive la Legion! Long life to the Legion!
What is the wine concentrate issued to legion? Driving me crazy!

Bonne précision. 🇫🇷
IDK. "Blood Sausage" definitely gives the song a certain flavor that seems to fit in with the rest of the lyrics.
Thank you for that explanation. Now it makes much more sense.

After 9 yrs in the USMC I contemplated going the Marseille and enlisting in the French Foreign Legion. What an adventure that would have been.
Yes, Marine & FFL training heck of a military background. They were formed in 1835, they hadhecin Mexico 5seversl yrs.
Imagine being a Belgian and singing that
Been there done that , first time I saw the sergents laughing , then I started laughing and got told ‘en postition’ 🤣
You are not Belgian when singing that. They are all french in that time.
Do you know why they sing that in the song. Cause allot of Belgians join, allot of Belgians, flemish and french speaking. Know the language better. So allot of the Belgians have more adminstration jobs in the legion. And the other solders thought is was a easier job. And that´s the reason why they sing that. ;) it´s more a joke. And the real history of the song.
Imagine being a Belgian. Having to wake up every morning, look in the mirror and realize you're still Belgian.
Belgians in Foreign Legion have to sing that

I recall doing uk para training in early 90s. One recruit had been in Legion and was asked to sing this. Can't believe now as a fat 50 year old I used to do tabs and runs with ex legionnaires 😀

History with the legionnaire is extraordinary. One that is documented throughout history.
For my entire life I thought it was a reference to the Bedouin, i.e. their arab foes during the Legion's golden years. I guess it's true you learn something every day.
The phrase "tireur au cul" must have a slangy idiomatic connotation, because word for word it's a bit crude.
merci....vous,etes.....un.personne....grand+et-plus....tu..comprends,ma-frere-de-geurre

Semper fidelis. most respect, fellas. USMC.
Vive la France 🇲🇫
Uh, "shirkers"? Non. "Ce sont des tireurs au cul" means "They're ass shooters", but the gist is the same. The king of Belgium refused to send troops for a crucial battle which the French were fighting. That's why they are immortalized in the song.
Vive La France!
Vive la Legion.....

Jean-Claude Van Damme had to sing this for his movie Legionnaire. The rest of the cast kept teasing him for being Belgian.

I don't understand: The French lyrics offered state: "Pour les Belges y en a plus." My limited French translates this as "For the Belgians there is some." The translations state: "For the Belgians, there is none." The latter, in French, as I understand French is "Pour les Belges n'y en a plus". That is the negation of "there is some". (there is some = y en a plus there is none = n'y en a plus) What happened to the negation, n'y en a plus, in the French song lyrics? Why is the "n' " missing from the French lyrics?
"y en a plus" is basically the short version of "il n'y en a plus"
In everyday langage we don't prononce the "n" of negation. "Plus" has two meanings (more and no more) , when it means "more", we prononce the "s" (y'en a plusse), when it means "no more", we don't prononce the S (y'en a plu).
The subtitles are wrong, so don´t let them fool you! The historical backround is this: In 1870 King Leopold the 2nd of Belgium wrote a letter to the commander of the french foreign legion with the request to not send belgium legionaires into the conflict between France and Germany! Why he did this, well Leopold iswere a member of the house saxony / coburg and belgium were neutral like the swiss.... The commmadatur of the foreign legion appreciated the requested and didn´t sended a single belgian into the war.
The text of the song has nothing to do with "blutwurst" or "black sausage" ! it means, no "Sturmgepaeck for the Belgians" because they will not join the war, thats what du Boudain means...
Du Boudain were a part of the equipment the legionaires carries with them, when the marched to war.

The legion is a 9k men army in the french army with executing around 90% of all military mission for France.
The rest of the army is doing what all armies around the world do, the protect the county by their existence not by execution tasks.
Under this point of view, the foreign legion is a special force, like the SAS, the navy Seals, the KSK or the Spetsnats.
Special forces fight, even without an official war, and not to protect borders...
... term for this is preventive or preemptive Strike
Hope this helped to enlighten you a bit....
