The crash you see James may in the evo was from their recent grand tour episode ‘Scandinavian flick’ and as someone who’s been in a sideways spin crash like that, let me tell you my heart dropped when I saw that it took me completely by surprise. It’s an episode I’d recommend!
The trick to bring mays Evo out the lake was legit, Hammond has a new love of “winching” where you purposely “crash” or place a car into a position it’s stuck just to get it back out again
He had an accident while participating in a rally in Switzerland, the vehicle burned after he crashed it. The watch he had was a swiss one who was later found and send back in a transparent case saying something along the lines of : made in zwitzerland, "perfected" by a british, because it survived the crash.
Axle Tramp mainly used to happen with the old fifties and sixties, leaf (cart) sprung stuff. You'd put your boot down and instead of going forwards the axle would wind backwards with the springs going S shaped. for better traction and to counteract this, things like Anti Tramp bars were fitted under the springs to tame it, holding the axle upright. There's horsepower and there's torque, torque is more usable. Of course, a decent power to weight ratio is important so you find a lot of modern stuff has weight savings everywhere, even plastic (not glass) headlights! They can be a pain as glass is a lot clearer and stays that way. The lacquer used to make the plastic clearer usually yellows after a few years.
Odd that you say the big car manufacturers are Japanese and German. James May did two seasons of a show (top gear spinoff ) called Cars of the People. He started one episode by claiming “If you want to win at cars, you must first lose at war!”. The episode compared the German and Japanese car industry with that of US and UK, both of which have significantly declined over the years. Detroit was a key focal point as you can imagine.
He said "axle tramp". Axle tramping is what the car is doing when it's hopping up the steep incline. Something to do with the weight of the car shifting onto and off from the back wheel axle when going up steep slopes. Never heard of it before but very neat :D
Axle tramp is the axle casing trying to rotate rather than the wheels pulling the vehicle,it happens with leaf springs winding up. Transit vans used to do it alot.
Hi Connor, in answer to your snorkel question, the engine requires air to mix with fuel so it can be ignited, if you get water in there it will kill the engine, so you can install a snorkel above the car to keep it going even in flood water.
14:15 - watch The Grand Tour special LOCHDOWN where they drive 3 classic American cars across Scotland. They realize rather quickly just how big those cars are compared to the Scottish streets and roads.
Panda 4x4 are brilliant little buggers, the plod and plug retentlesly The 4x4 system was made by Steyr-Daimler-Puch a great military truck off roader manufacturer from Austria.
You're very right to be sceptical :) That's exactly why they didn't show the full shot when the car was moving significantly. Still, pretty fun and it's a useful thing to know.
Never underestimate the power of levers and pulleys. You can exponentially increase force or maximize/change direction of said applied force with a bit of math knowledge and some ingenuiety
14:13 The American Brother is Richard Hammond, unlike Clarkson he does like a lot of American stuff. He is the one that most like shows up in a pickup truck or muscle car to a challenge.
US cars were only really semi-known in the past, and thats because they were absolutely huge with ridiculously large engines that gave surprisingly little power and were famous for being made with materials made to look durable, but not actually be durable. As soon as petrol started to get expensive and car manufactures were prioritizing fuel saving, easy maintenance and accessibility the US cars pretty much got wiped off the market outside the US (apart from Ford which was already doing that before to an extent). In regards to sport cars, US manufacturers rarely participated in European races, where the vast majority of them occurred or originate from (again, Ford tried). Racing in different countries in Europe made the manufacturers popular and prestigious. There are so many companies that were once at the peak of sports cars / luxury cars thanks to racing but now you barley hear about them at all or have completely changed
I've heard that Americans are generally more disposable with their cars, replacing them more often. While europeans own their cars for much longer. So we just have different attitudes as consumers, and this affects how manufacturers make cars for us. Regulations are important too, this means more vs less potential cutting corners in production to chase profits.
Oh we’ve got plenty of “soccer mom” cars over here in the UK BMW X5 BMW X6 Any Mercedes SUV Any Vauxhall (or as you’d call it, Opel) Suzuki Seat (say-at) Peugeot (French)
There are these things called corners in the rest of the worlds roads (the u.s don't have them) which means we have to build cars that can go in circles easier ✌🏻
While big wheels and high suspension do improve a car's of road handling. The Fiat makes a fantastic cheap little of roader because of its extremely light weight and short wheelbase. In the hands of a skilled driver it'll go almost as far as a real cross country vehicle for a fraction of the price.
Spent the day all day today driving small European roads. It's so different than the USA. They are just blown away by the size of everything we have. Parking lots for businesses. Big parking lots...Foreign to them.
You mean 'normal' roads driven on by normal sized humans and not one's with a girth the same size as the ego! By blown away I think you mean shaking heads thinking 'idiots' 😂I'm only sort of joking😂😂✌️
After WWii Germany, Italy and Japan were all put under severe control in regards to military production. All the former military factories were put to use for other things, mainly cars. The allied countries still invested heavily into producing weapons... 80 years later, and you have the current situation...
2:14 Thats happen if you dont use all diff locks. 4:05 US have good engeneers to build good cars? Who tell you that? And wich US car ist good? Maybe your giant pickups. Japan, Germany and Korea is good. But Sweden (Volvo, Saab) and Chech (Skoda) is very good too. Sometimes there is Italy (Fiat, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Maserati), France (Renault, Peugot, Citroen) and Spain (Seat).
Love your Top Gear/Grand Tour videos. Keep them coming you sexy muppet! 😂😂😂 ✌️❤️🏴🇬🇧🏳️🌈 xxx 🤪🥰 Ps 45 horsepower is pitiful but James is famous for loving the Fiat Panda. You’re looking to the high hundreds for your super cars; the Bugatti Veyron famously topping 1000 horsepower. You can get more theses days but that’s still a legendary car. ❤
The axle tramp is usually caused by leaf springs twisting from the torque of the wheels and causing it to jump like that. I believe Americans call it wheel hop. It can still happen if you get an American car (a common mistake buyers in the US make) without individual wheel suspension (though they have caught up a bit, they prefer money over safety still).
The reason america doesn't make good cars is because they make them as cheaply as possible to maximise profits but at the expense of quality. My grandad (british) designed a factories in ho chi min city and it was so high tech an all white and clean and the american factory making the same thing and built at the same time was full of smoke and had oil leaking everywhere
I think that America is so terrible at creating good cars is because the designers only need to consider fat people driving along straight roads with very few turns and switchbacks - whereas countries like Italy have mountain roads such as The Stelvio and Alpe d' Huez
Because American ethos when building cars is to build them cheap and disposable so people buy new ones after a few years where as the rest of the world tries to build them to last usually
Regarding US car making, almost all of your engineers and scientists these days are H1B visa holders, it's higher than 80%. But your business is selling the cheapest product at the highest price. The end result is fairly poor quality overpriced crap. Europe realised a LONG time ago that we can't compete with China when it comes to cheap crap so we had to step up on quality and make really high premium quality cars. The Japanese are doing that as well but the US seems to focus on the US market where people will buy it because it was made in China and assembled in America which means it's "made in America".

Never underestimate a Fiat Panda 4x4. These are surprisingly good off-road.

First, Richard Hammond had an infamous crash, one which is constantly joked about.
You were correct on Mongolia.
Just the 1? :P

Clarkson now uses the Bentley "MFB" as a fast run about in his farm
Marvellous Farmer's Bentley?

The Fiat Panda 4x4 is a legendary off-roader in Europe.
Mums drive 4x4 a lot in the UK, they're known as Chelsea tractors 🚜 😀
James nearly killled himself twice in the latest special LOL
Connor “that looks kinda cool”
Me (simultaneously) “ that looks fuc#ing horrible” 😂
Connor your knowledge of geography and history is impressive !
For an American, yes it is.
The Bentley is now in a museum, or was. I think Clarkson might have wanted it. That Panda is actually a ridiculously versatile off roader!
Didn't he have it on his farm
@@paultaylor781 He did indeed!
Axle tramp, when the torsion through the drivetrain causes the axles to bounce, if excessive, things start to break.
That was an inspired guess at the beginning, it was indeed Mongolia!

Well done, spotting Mongolia, very impressive dude. much love from Norfolk UK. J

You will find a small vehicle can assist a larger one to get pout of a wet spot sometimes but the other vehicle must be driven too.
The music wasn't Apollo 13, it was Fanfare for the Common Man by Emerson Lake and Palmer. A real classic.
Composed in 1942 by Aaron Copland, still one of the most famous concert openers. Talking about classics..
One of the greatest composers from the US. Surprised he didn't know that.
You should check out when Hammond nearly died trying to break the land speed record.
