As an actor myself this is a great watch. You never really see actors just sit and act like natural human beings with all the normal hesitancy in communication that comes with being strangers to eachother. And these two do a really good job the characters' subtext oozes just as strongly as it does in real life. Though, in real life -- and here -- either people generally aren't trained enough to notice this fully, or people don't want to make assumptions and act on the perceived subtext. (It is both)

Just this week I read the channel's description out of simply curiosity and there Simon says he makes films with his friends and a few days later I found this in my Subscriptions feed, what a nice coincidence

Hoping there’s a follow up on this film. I initially thought that I wouldn’t be gripped by this, considering I typically make it 3 minutes into a 10 minute long video, but Simon Roper has managed to pull me into an interesting story yet again.
Fantastic work.
I absolutely love the scene where they touch each others faces for reasons I can't describe sufficiently with words.
From one 'Simon' to another, I must tell you how much I appreciated this film. "My Dinner with Andre" obviously comes to mind, but this film does something quite different that I have trouble finding the words for. Its assuredly less monologue-y than Andre, taking into consideration how people really speak to each other casually. In this way, I found the characters much more believable, and some of the higher 'heady' themes that Dinner with Andre deal with are grounded very well in this film, taking into account how people, given some space and privacy and time, really like to talk to each other about these things.
I know the ending may draw some conflicting interpretations. I'll put a spoiler warning here for those who don't wanna hear my personal interpretation:

I like to think that this film is primarily about the self, and the ways we each individually choose to explore it. Nick seems to find himself hard to describe - elements like his sexuality and sense of character are shown to be a bit ambiguous and complicated, but when given the space that Laura affords him, he's able to talk about it in much more casual terms. Laura seems much more open and explorative, finding herself in the company of others. Thus the obvious chemistry between the two. Jeremy, the trigger finger of this film's Chekov Gun, seems to have found an alternative doorway into the self - the acid.
Looming over the conversation the whole time, the audience patiently waiting for how it will finally fit in and tie everything together, we see in Jeremy an excited, almost manic obsession with finding out "who the fuck are you, who the fuck are you? Why are you here?" to the mirror. This obsession is the 'mirror' of Nick and Laura's tacit exploration of one another - and by extension, themselves. Their nightlong conversation is seen to ultimately be another form of looking into the mirror, wondering where the fuck any of this came from, or where it will go when we're gone.
That's the best way I could put it. The more I type, the more the meaning I got out of the film seems elusive. But it's there. And I thank you.

Great watch!! Enjoyed every minute of it. I feel like art is always teying to communicate soemthing and when you see people being so earnest and... Frankly, honest and truthful in how they execute that art, you feel like youre connecting with something. Thats exactly what I got from this. My world feels a little richer now!

@@jeanettefox2261In previous videos, Simon has talked about how rare it is to find recorded instances of natural/conversational/unrehearsed speech from the past. He has tried to recreate this kind of speech from the past. One example of that is the video where he and his friends pretend to be young, working-class men from the 1960s and they try to speak the way they would have back then. He has also expressed an interest in trying to capture this kind of contemporary natural/conversational speech to preserve for future generations. It seems like this short film is an attempt to recreate normal/conversational contemporary speech, and I think he does a very good job.
Also: he seems to have an interest in making short films so, why not? 😉
@SallyMangos it can on a general level, but most of Simon's videos are on the topic of linguistics and I don't see what this film is trying to show, sorry.
@burendasan of course, he can make short films if he wishes. In a linguistic context though, I just don't know what Simon is aiming at here. There may have been a shortage of recordings of natural speech in the past; I doubt we will have a problem with that in the future as the world is awash with videos of people speaking naturally, as long as we are able to access the formats in the future. But these are actors playing parts. I very much enjoyed the video of Simon doing the 1960s working class characters, having grown up in East London at that time listening to such conversations. In fact, there were particular features of male speech from that time I had forgotten about, so that was really interesting for me. But this I just don't get.
Great! Conversation is what indie film does best. Just unpretentious, and well made, with interesting ideas. Reminds me a little of those recent FMV video games like Ten Dates, Contradiction, et cetera. A lot of fun!
Hey Simon, have you seen Gallows Pole? It seems to fit your interests, is a bit folk horror, and the dialogue is notably very natural and it feels improvised a lot. Quite an interesting thing to have been made and show on mainstream TV.

Even though I had a hard time following it once he subtitles ran out, I was able to get the gist of it. I have so many questions but I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone else.
Are the actors depicting “Nick” and “Laura” a couple in real life? Because they have good chemistry…

I also had a hard time following the dialogue once the subtitles ran out. If you (Simon) can get around to finishing them, it would be much appreciated!
What a brilliant upload. Im only ten minutes in and I know im going to love it. As for the audio i wouldn't worry to much, the bbc are guilty of the same thing with Poldark lol.

At first I thought the movie had a really weird, non-sequitur kind of ending (British films are infamous in America for this kind of thing), but then I realized, it was just as much about Jeremy as it was Nick and Laura. After all, he was the tie they shared, and they were in his bedroom. They were obviously very attracted to each other, and the acid probably would have done them some good. But Nick wasn't brave enough to acknowledge his feelings and step outside his comfort zone. And Jeremy was feeling shittier than he had in his life, absolutely the *wrong* frame of mind, and he decides to run from his problem, only to make it a thousand times worse. Nick and Laura could have saved him from this by taking the acid, but they didn't. Sad.
I guess I'm officially "boring" because this is just my type of story =P these days I find subjective themes more interesting than anything scientific or even historical... just watching people and discovering bits of their infinity through looks, gestures, words, sometimes not even words at all.
