I'm thinking you're just blessed, cause there hasn't been one wash day where your curls aren't defined and popping to the GODS! I know you said there were flakes.. and i believe you, but they weren't visible on camera queen!! When I say your weekly wash-days inprove my weeks, I'm not exaggerating!!! Can't wait for the next wash-day after your hair appointment😍 LIVING for your energy and your gorgeous face and curls❤
Hey Ben E 👋🏾 Blessed and highly favored 😭 I’m so surprised by the amount of people, saying they haven’t seen the flakes! They were small, but mighty 😂 thank ya ❤️
You're not alone... I'm tired of having short hair as well. My 2nd big chop was in 2020. I'm hoping to see a big difference with length retention by the end of this year. My hair shape is similar to yours, and I need my wash and go at my shoulders! This wash and go is so nice! I love the volume and definition 😍 Flakes will ruin the accomplishment you feel when you get a great combo. So annoying 😭
It looks like we’re in this together because my last big chop was December 2020! What’s hard is knowing my hair could’ve been longer had I not gone with a shape, but I’ve been wanting a shape to grow my hair out and so I went ahead and bit the bullet anyway which I don’t regret, but I do think about it sometimes lol.
I hate when the hair flakes!! Especially when the pairing gives great Day 1 hair. It may be the olaplex/deep conditioner? Sometimes when I don't rinse out the treatments well enough or when I do my Olaplex, I notice my products might flake after. It also could not pair well together who knows. ALSO YES LENGTH. I feel like no matter what my hair is in that awkward fro stage once it's dry. I just want it to touch my shoulders the way it does in the shower. Anyways, thanks for trying the kinky curly with a different product this time around.
Yeah on the kinky curl come clean shampoo it said their products wont work well with silicones, butters, oils etc and to make sure your hair is clean. Olapex has silicones in it maybe that's why, but I'm not sure. It could be the AG product as well
I only get my ends trimmed by Brianna during my salon visits. But that’s coming up soon after this! Although I must admit, I didn’t get much of the trimming process 🙈 I’ll record that next time.
I bought curl maker because of the last video. Your hair is GROWING, the volume with this wng, is amazing. Love the sweater you wore on day 3. I only wear wash and gos so your videos are so inspiring. Can't wait til next week.
Do you mind me asking, if you wear wng all year round do you wear them even during winter. If so, I live in Buffalo, where the winter can be very harsh. I’m wondering is it safe to do so with wng?
@@afrikopopfitness6745 Thank you for this comment. I always wondered why people have different wash day routines for their hair based on the season. I literally was going to ask Brittany but I think you summed it up; In the winter conditions our hair needs more moisture??
@@BeYoutifulBombshell In the winter our hair tends to be drier, so for me I would use more of a creme based leave in or moisturizer to lock in hydration, for example this week last Sunday, I used Matrix, a curl can dream moisturizing creme and Cantu defining custard, my hair is so soft, moisturized and defined the only downside is there is a bit of flakes, but I still love it!
When I used kinky curly, I would dilute it with some distilled water, which would help with the flakes and also stretch the product to make it last longer.
Oh, I understand completely about wanting longer hair TODAY. I have been natural over a decade but my hair wasn’t flourishing like it could be-now that I follow simple hair care practices and know better (was doing LO method with a weak a&$ shampoo = buildup = breakage). I think I will have better tolerance for my coily fro once I finally take the next step and partner with a tight curl specialist and get a banging shape like you’ve done. None near me so i’ll need to save for traveling as well. I wonder if you’d have better success with AG’s mousse gel (purple can), i haven’t seen anyone complain of flakes with that formula (at least not when topped over ufd). Love the volume this combo gave though, damn shame it snowed on you.
I keep thinking that way too. Like, what if I had started this process when I was in middle school or high school I could’ve been had my goal hair! All good, we learn as we go. I’ve seen some people use it, and I am interested in it, so I’ll keep my eye out for it. Such a shame, because the volume in the definition was insane!
Like always it's a bomb wash n go.. I couldn't see the flakes but I believe you if you seen them. I was eyeing this foam because I can get get it easily. I'm surprise there was flake. Can't wait to see your next combo. I have my hair appointement (it's been 10 months). I know I need a trimming but I did ok while taking care of my hair.
Your hair always look amazing! I did notice today that you smooth your hair more then raking. I think I will try more smoothing then raking. Would love to see your Salon visit.😊
What if you tried spending more time separating your hair while it’s wet? Maybe it will eliminate possible flakes from the gel cast. Because as soon as you put the mousse in, you hair clumped into tiniest sections but you missed many of them. I was surprised how tiny your hair separated on its own. Kind or reminded me of my own curl type but with a different curl size. ☺️ I can so relate about wanting long hair, but I’m sure you will reach it because your hair is growing fast! ♥️
I really didn’t want to become a shingle type of natural lol because I just feel like it takes so much time, but it probably saves time in the end to make sure the curls are separated before drying. Especially if that’s a look, I’m going for. I noticed that too! I think that’s why I love the kinky curly custard so much because it really sculpts and molds itself around the individual curls, giving really great definition. And thanks for the suggestion ❤️🫶🏾
I know how you feel. It's the fine flakes looks like dandruff especially on dark clothing. I've learned to test a combo mix before applying to my hair. Wet your hand, smooth lil bit of gel then rub in your topper. Mix well, wait to see how it dries.
Your hair looks so beautiful. Honestly, I didn't really see flakes, but I am sorry you got some. I do have a question. Would you try other hairstyles like a twist out, braid out, etc. I really like how your wash and gos are, but I was asking out of curiosity.
I appreciate that! It’s tricky because the flakes were so small, but they were definitely there 😂 I’m sure I will in the future, but honestly, I have no desire to do anything outside of a wash and go’s right now. I love a good twist out, braid out, or even a flexi rod or a perm rod set. But to be frank, I’m way too lazy to do anything else right now.
I don’t usually get flakes with KC either although a lot of people complain about it flaking. I think the key is finding the perfect water to product ratio. If I use too much cream/leave in, I might get a bit of flakes by day 3-4 but oil helps.
I think I had a good water to product ratio, but it was either these two products together just don’t mix, and/or I over manipulated my hair when I was separating (which I really think caused the amount of flakes towards the roots) When you say oil helps, are you talking about after your hair is dry or you add oil when your hair is still wet?
@@BrittanyMia I get flakes from separating sometimes too 😭 and I have this oil spray from Jane Carter and I use it as oil sheen but it’s great for emergencies. Idk what they put in that thing but it worked a miracle. Poof, flakes were gone 😂 I think the product is discontinued now -sigh- but similar oil sprays might work.
Oh, it looks so good! I feel ya pain especially having so many KCCC jars. Did you mix them in your hands and see a white residue? I have had decent success using it with Mousse def. Don't give up - you will be the one to crack the code of using KCCC with other products 👊🏾
My stylist used the Kinky Curly curling custard as the only styling product in my hair. It turned out perfect! During other appointments, she's used the Curly Magic and I Create Hold on me. Those were great products as well, but I was so surprised that just 1 styling product (the curling custard) was all I needed. The curling custard was great for 7 days. It could have lasted longer, but I washed it on the 7th day. It may be that when a person stacks products, that's when flaking can occur. Have you tried the Curly Magic with the mouse? And if yes, did you get flaking? Oh wait, I remember something my stylist said: She used Kinky Curly Knot Today as the conditioner and showed me what would happen if she left a little in my hair when she was about to apply the curling custard. She said we have to fully rinse out the Knot Today because if we leave some in and apply the curling custard on top of it, my hair would flake.
I’ve tried to Curly magic with the Mousse def and I had no flaking. That’s odd because the knot today is technically a leave-in, but can be used as a conditioner. I haven’t had issues with flaking. at least within the first week when I used for two together.
I'm still learning but I think the flaking may not be due to the products themselves but it may be how much product we are using that can cause flakes. I think if we are too heavy handed it can cause flakes but the dilemma is how do we determine how much and when.
I’ve noticed if I don’t wash out the Kinky Curly cleanser all the way it will definitely cause flakes when I add the Knot Today and Custard. I’ve been wanting to try the custard and mousse but have been skeptical. After seeing this video today. I will give it a try!!
I’ve been hearing that a lot lately, and I just bought so many to pair with other products 😭Hopefully it pairs well with some other products I’m going to try it with. I guess we’ll see.
Do you think you would get better separation if you use a blow dryer on the cool setting? BTW we’re loving the GlowbyDaye bonnets. They’re our new go-to!
I just watched your videos from a year ago and comparing to today thinking "wow, her hair grew really fast!" but then you said you're tired of short hair 😅💕✊🏾🇿🇦
Nice results! I wonder if you had some residue of the rinse out conditioner still in your hair 🤔? ...may be the flakey culprit. By the way your content is so refreshing!
Hello Bertha, you’re welcome. Not always. It just depends on the product that I’m using but pretty much almost always. I’m currently at the point where I’m going to start adding the products at the same time just to save time, but with leave in conditioners and botanical gels that are like the flaxseed gel texture, I add in everywhere first because I like giving it time to soak into my hair.
You hair looks so good. I don’t see any flakes. Now you know that Kinky Curly Custard is so fickle. It does not like mixing products that is not related 😂😂😂 Maybe you can try the Mousse first then out the custard on top. Day 4 still looking good.
I promise, they were there lol. But thank you. I really didn’t know honestly. I haven’t used it with different products like I have with the curly magic. That’s unfortunate though because I bought so many to try with different products. I’ll still give them a try, but hopefully I find some combos that don’t flake.
Thank you for this video Brittany! i wish this combo didnt flake cause your hair looked gorgeous and is growing beautifully! Im rooting for you to find a solution to this flaking madness. I noticed that your detangling sessions seem to keep the clumped curls intact. I assumed we should be thoroughly finger raking our hair when shampoo detangling, conditioner/deep conditioner detangling, and then even follow up with a tool if needed to insure absolutely no knots, fairy knots, or tangles remain. I also thought I should be raking when applying the gels or stylers so that I also detangle during that segment. Is this not neccessary for every wash day or at all? Is there a point in your wash day or a specific wash day during the week or month where you prefer to do a indepth thorough finger detangling or detangling with a tool? Im asking because I wonder if I am over manipulating my hair during these segments and causing more breakage rather than helping my hair. Do you prefer to not manipulate or disrupt the clumped curls and focus on detangling in between clumps only?Im trying to explain and ask questions surrounding what I see but please correct me, if you are doing something else.
What I found at this point is that smoothing during the shampoo process and then following up with a tool to detangle during the deep conditioning process, helps to clump my curls. I recently went about a week and a half almost 2 weeks without resetting my hair, and I ended up pre-Poing with my olaplex number five conditioner. I could have gone straight in with shampooing, but my hair really needed some thing, softening and moisturizing before going in with shampoo. I mentioned this to say that I detangled with a comb before going in with my shampoo today, and that helped my detangling process during the deep conditioner. I don’t do a detangling day to finger to tangle, I basically have found that shampooing frequently is the only thing that keeps my hair from needing a thorough detangling session. However, at my last salon appointment, Breanna mentioned the importance of stretching the cuticle before applying the product in order to fully saturated the hair strand with product. I’ve found that I would rather use the Denman brushes that I’ve been trying out as detanglers (I still prefer the Felicia Leatherwood, or the Ouidad double tooth, comb) to style my curls by brushing each small section right before applying my base gel, or setting product. It worked very well and it helped spread my product evenly. I used the curl maker, and it typically flakes on me, but I have an experienced any flaking so far. I noticed when brushing right before applying the product that my end really needed that. I could have just used my fingers, but I fear that I’ve been allowing knots to stay in my hair by just finger detangling during the application step. When had I just combed it out a little bit right before adding the product it would’ve prevented setting knots in my hair. And I think that you can’t fully avoid fairy knots it’s just time for a trim, but you can avoid the knots that are avoidable. And I also found that it does not ruin my clumped Curls, if anything, it enhances them! Sorry for the late reply I’ve been trying to get to the comments 🤎❤️🤎
Hey❤ how has olaplex been working for you so far? I see they are currently going through a lawsuit for their products allegedly causing baldness and blisters. (But I seen ppl such as stylists who have used it for years are also saying that maybe that is happening to ppl who maybe over-used or maybe didn’t follow the instructions) so idk. I bought the kit and now don’t know if I should return it or not😢
Hey 👋🏾 I have been loving OlaPlex. I have nothing but good things to say about it because I’ve had nothing but good experiences so far. I have seen that there is a lawsuit and I’ve had people ask me about it. However, I don’t plan on stopping until there’s some science or research supporting the lawsuit claims 💕.
@@BrittanyMia thanks for your response! It does seem like it’s doing well for your curls (main reason to why I decided to order the kit) can you maybe do an in-depth 2 or 3 month update with the Olaplex? What differences you noticed since first using it and now, your routine, etc.
Heya, Kinky Curly doesn't really play well with other products outside of its own line , and the Kinky Curly Knot Today is the main styler, you really only need bit of the custard on top of the Knot Today to see great results. You could try that out and see if it works for you.
Shame about the flakes but you’ve had other great combos so... has your stylist suggested what could have gone wrong? My guess would be that they don't mix well. Sometimes I have to apply the mousse on damp hair once the botanical has almost fully absorbed to avoid flaking.
I do, but this combo would’ve been a favorite if not for the flakes. She mentioned it could be the combo may not mix well, but she also said she’s heard a lot of ppl get flakes with Kinky Curly Custard.
I wonder if it's Aloe Vera. It tends to flake/glob when it doesn't agree with ingredients from another product. It's uncommon that the order of layering ingredients will fix it. It's easier using aloe in a low porosity hair routine. I gave up one aloe cream product I liked. Any conflict left so many flakey globs and I had to wash my hair again. There was no fixing it.
Gorgeous result!! I was disheartened when you mentioned the flaking. Please do not apologize for being impatient for longer hair. If your goal is to attain longer hair then as a normal person you will feel impatient from time to time. Your hair is really beautiful.
Yes, they are designed to work as a system. It could be that it simply doesn’t work with other products, but hopefully that’s not the case because I love creating different combos from products outside of their original system. We shall see.
@Brittany Mia ya i believe that too. Ion think they work well with other products. Hopefully u find that perfect combo then share it with us. Lol. When u see the sale for kinky curly products, please inform us.
@@BrittanyMia I look at wash & go's differently from what others may look at it. I do oils. I don't do all of the different mixes and all of that stuff. Most times it's not necessary, this is my opinion. Now I will do a deep moisturizer after I wash my hair then won't touch it again until next month. This helps with the tangles. This method is only for the cold months. Less manipulation is my key. I get tired of playing in my hair and I let nature take its place. The key to all of my crazy hair growth is what I put in the inside of my body (natural foods) and water. I clip my own ends. I never had a silk press so I don't know anything about them, maybe one day. Nothing else works for me. I don't use any cremes or any of that to get build up in my hair.
STEAM. Let me put you up on game hair twin. Get you a lil steamer.. better yet, if you think I'm playing, literally save the coin and go boil some water real quick and rotate your head around it for 5 minutes. Make sure you're over it long enough for your hair to take up the warmth & moisture. It's a quick hack to kind of reconstitute the gel.. I find that custards and botanical gels just have this tendency to make gummy flakes after a while and one day i was steaming my face and oop.
@@BrittanyMia So for me personally, I do it when it's dried and if I see flakes. It's more of a quick remedy than something mandatory. Frankly I have allergies and live in a dry climate so I already like to steam my face and breath it in just to relax. I it's a great way to warm up and gently reconstitute the gel without getting your hair "wet" if that makes sense. This is also why people (including myself) love refresher sprays, a lot of the time the cast (the gel) can break down and leave flakes, steam and/or refreshers sort of reset the gel in a sense.
@@BrittanyMia I have. In my personal opinion shower steam isn't warm or direct enough to make a big difference but I'm sure it "could" help lol. Also being in the shower 20 minutes can lead to frizz and you might get it fully wet. I like concentrated steam because it's quick and direct and your hair can reset and dry fast without losing your style.

You hair looks so good.
I don’t see any flakes.
Now you know that Kinky Curly Custard is so fickle.
It does not like mixing products that is not related 😂😂😂
Maybe you can try the Mousse first then out the custard on top.
Kinky Curly doesn't play well with other products; The knot today works well with it.
Heya, Kinky Curly doesn't really play well with other products outside of its own line , and the Kinky Curly Knot Today is the main styler, you really only need bit of the custard on top of the Knot Today to see great results. You could try that out and see if it works for you.
Heeey. Yeah, I use the knot today with it mainly. Just trying out some different combinations to add a little spice 🌶️ thanks for the tips.
@@BrittanyMia ohh fair enough~ it would be nice to have other options, it can be hard to get a hold of Kinky Curly Knot Today at times
My daughter has kinky curly hair like yours
Can I ask where are these bonnets from? I like that they adjust and reversible with multiple colors.

Maybe using oil on your hair after applying the kinky curly. I find that works for me.
Where did you purchase your hair clips?
These clips I purchased from Colortrak.
@@BrittanyMia thank you
KC doesn’t work well with other products that’s not KC, that may be the reason for the flakes as well as using so much product.
I don’t think the products mix.
Gorgeous result!! I was disheartened when you mentioned the flaking. Please do not apologize for being impatient for longer hair. If your goal is to attain longer hair then as a normal person you will feel impatient from time to time. Your hair is really beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Probably because kinky curly is designed to work as a system.
I saw the flakes. I do not use any gels because of the flakes which can be noticeable. I use oil only, no luck with any gels.
When you say you use oil only, do you do wash and go’s?
@@octaviawalker823 that’s interesting. Well, thanks for sharing what you do and what works for you.
Dont see any flakes on camera. The mouse and kinky curly don't mix
Do you do this after you’ve styled and dried the hair fully? Where would I do this in the routine?
@@BrittanyMia So for me personally, I do it when it's dried and if I see flakes. It's more of a quick remedy than something mandatory.
Frankly I have allergies and live in a dry climate so I already like to steam my face and breath it in just to relax. I it's a great way to warm up and gently reconstitute the gel without getting your hair "wet" if that makes sense.
This is also why people (including myself) love refresher sprays, a lot of the time the cast (the gel) can break down and leave flakes, steam and/or refreshers sort of reset the gel in a sense.
@@Sloppyjoey1 thank you for explaining. I’m going to have to give that a try when I have flakes again. Have you ever tried using the shower steam?
@@BrittanyMia I have. In my personal opinion shower steam isn't warm or direct enough to make a big difference but I'm sure it "could" help lol.
Also being in the shower 20 minutes can lead to frizz and you might get it fully wet. I like concentrated steam because it's quick and direct and your hair can reset and dry fast without losing your style.
@@Sloppyjoey1 thank you 😊
