I close my eyes. It's 1999. The internet is still relatively new and online gaming hasn't reached the masses yet. I get home from dinner at Pizza Hut on a Friday night, sit down at my newly purchased computer with a 266mhz CPU and plug in the phone line to the computer and the sound of the dial up takes over my conscious. This music begins to play as the UO chest opens and I'm transported to another world. A world that I don't truly understand yet, but I know there are many friends to be made and many enemies to watch out for. I run to my house, north of Minoc, with a bag full of ore. Almost shaking because I know at a moments notice it could all be taken away from me. I run past my friends house and see him, we stop to talk about our week at school and how excited we are to spend all weekend in Britannia. He helps me to my house, which is nearby, just incase any PK’s around around. Which there is. We quickly get inside my house, hearts beating fast and ready for an adventure all night together.
When I open my eyes, it's now 2022. All of those memories are still so fresh inside my mind. However, I no longer have that house near Minoc. My old friend and I haven't talked in 20 years and almost everyone has left Napa Valley leaving it a ghost town.
I will forever remember this great game as it once was.

he only MMO game I ever played where: You had to trust your friends with everything. Absolutely everything. Good and evil was real. Eating food healed... your hunger. (Ok, so it did that in EQ as well.) You could own a persistent house that would take up actual space in the world. Death was serious. Loss was real. Fear was real. A passing stranger could make or break your day. You got stronger by using your muscles, smarter by using your brain, and better at things by doing them. UO. Forever.

This was the best MMO, in 2d. It truly was.
Your own house, your own neighbors, your own economy, your own skills, everyone equal.
Fighting monsters you could do, or you could be killed by criminals, and eventually murderers, who were run out of town.
You could eb good, or bad, a merchant, a healer, a pet tamer, a warrior, a wizard, or even a simple beggar... it didn't matter. The game had limitless possibility, and it was created, and run by the players.
      Fantastic game.

To this day... there is not a single game, that can fill the place of UO in my heart. So many incredible memories, friendships, that became real life friendships. Big part of the people in my life, I met because of UO, whether they directly played it, or were just friends of friends I played UO with. I can say, I met my current fiancee because of UO, because my friend I used to play UO with, had a girlfriend, and she was her friend. So I probably wouldnt have met her if it wasnt for UO. Truly amazing times and memories, when I hear the soundtrack I feel very emotional and nostalgic!

I thought I was the only one experiencing these feelings, that how dear this game was to me. I spent countless nights trying to do and build something in this realm, fight for the cause in which I believed. It felt so real, even more real than my actual life maybe, as creepy and sad as it may sound. Then nearly after a couple decades, I come here, see these comments and realize that I was far from being the only person that had this unique experience. This realization is priceless. People from every corner of the world, that spent their childhood trying to accomplish similar things with me, delved into the same dungeons with me, cried over stolen items or mounts, ran miles and miles in ghost form in order to get to a healer, get lost in the middle of nowhere, afraid of encountering murderers, soaked this medieval and mystic world in, just as I did. The exciting chill you had at those moments, with your 56k internet connection... It's... very, VERY hard to explain the feelings that this game induced to someone who did not played it, but that feeling is permanent and it's being triggered every time I listen to this music. Each piece reminds me of a different adventure I've gone through. Each city had a distinct taste and these music is the reminder of that. But now I know that there is a complete generation that share this bond. I see that there are many people who understand that inexplainable, warm feeling as much as I do when listening to this. Thank you, producers of this game. It was the greatest game I've ever played, with its atmosphere, music and in-game dynamics. I owe these very precious memories to you. And I feel very, very sorry for those who did not get to know this game, at that time. Because it's impossible to experience the same thing (not the game, that complete *thing*), ever again. That's just sad.

    • @AnthonyJSerio
      @AnthonyJSerio 7 лет назад +16

Ditto. It's an experience that I can only describe as catching lightning in a bottle. The nostalgia hits me hard. Good vs Evil was a real thing. You relied on the bonds you made in the game. Someone wrote above, "crossing paths with a stranger could make or break your day." That really resonated with me. The human dynamic was so real. I remember watching my friend play this game for the first time - I must have been around 12 - and was shocked when I asked if he was interacting with real people. We all played the game religiously and my little brother got into it with me. A real bond was forged over this mystical universe. Just listening to this song floods me with emotion and memories. It brings me to a simpler time when logging into this game gave us all an escape -- and freedom. I truly miss this game and once again... your comment resonated with me deeply and we're clearly not the only ones who feel this way. UO forever!

It was truly a unique experience, not just a game, but almost a social experiment, where I met many friends, and forged bonds with people i still interact with today. Not many games can do that, and honestly every time I hear this song, it takes me back. UO was more of a experience, then just a game.

My soul aches to go back to these times... times when you had to make friends to learn about the game, times when you tried things out of a sense of curiosity and adventure... times when I would stare at the cloth map that came with my game and literally use it to navigate in-game. Now every MMO puts you on rails, and you can google/youtube every single step of every single game. The sense of adventure is gone now. Ultima Online was the definition of magic to my 13-year-old self.

I close my eyes and am transported to a 12 year old version of myself. I am taking another sick day off school due to not fitting in, afraid of the other kids who just seem so confident. I take solace in the sound of the internet dialling, knowing that soon I will be able to escape this cruel world that I feel so lost in. The sweet inviting sound of this melody welcomes me into a world much different to the one I am used to, with endless possibilities and adventures to be had. I meet with friends I have met along the way, simple pleasures such as farming lumber for the morning, together we make a killing due to playing on an Aussie server but everyone else working or being at school. Plenty of goodies for us!
This game brought comfort to me during a time of great difficulty, with family problems and lack of support. Now, I am very different to that scrawny, short terrified kid. I am very strong, very attractive (you can take my word for it) very successful. I have an amazing family, many friends, beautiful wife and daughter. However, this music takes me back to that comforting feeling I once had, so many emotions flood my brain. In the end I feel only peace. Thank you UO, and to the friends I made there, a moment forever lost in time.

Back on dial up, I used to play a text based mud. One day I saw Ultima Online in a UK gaming store and just had to get it after i read that it was a graphical permanently available online only fantasy world, the first such game i had seen. As a new player, it was laggy on dial up, and the PKs would regularly kill me and steal the ore that I mined around the town of Minoc, but this didn't deter me. If anything, the risk of loss made it feel more rewarding when I would safely bring back a large haul of ore. This kind of fun I have experienced in very few games since.
I learned to mine naked with a pickaxe to reduce loss, smelting the ore and selling the ingots to player blacksmiths at the local smith, who paid more than the npc price. I used the gold i earned from this to buy a small house. I trained up my weapon skills and magery, and eventually was taking down dragons and balrons single handedly, as well as successfully fighting back against reds and doing some pking myself. Corp Por.
I think if they ever made official old school uo, it could do very well. Its a shame they won't try.
Although sadly, any new attempt at UO would undoubtedly be swarmed with 3rd world farmers, with everything power farmed to sell for real world profit at cheap prices. This wasn't a thing back in the early days of UO, especially not on the industrial scale that it happens today. In some countries, online game farming is done at large scale.

  • @kewkabe

My first or second week of UO in December of '97 I got the courage to venture out of the city despite being warned it was full of PK's and they'll take everything you have... I made it a few screens out and soon enough was chased and lightning bolted. OoooOoOoOo I yelled at them. They saw my meager bone armor, the candle and 50 gold in my pack, and realized I was a newbie. One of them resurrected me, then gave me much better armor, a magic sword, 1000 gold and sent me on my way. I knew it was a special community and was hooked.

No game has had quite the impact on me as the buying and selling of property, trying to GM Cartography, or being truly concerned about traveling from one place to another worried about losing black pearls to some PK waiting to gank you with a vanquishing Kris. There has been no game as truly pure an experience of knowing who you can trust and having the ever looming feeling of loss as the one established by UO. Gamers today are weak in comparison having grown up with their hands being held and never experiencing working for weeks to get a set of ranger armor just to have to it taken from you the very day you find someone at the Brit Bank selling the chest piece. No one understands what it feels like to finally have a pair of blessed black Sandals anymore outside of those that are likely listening to this piece of music with tears in their eyes. UO isn’t a game. It is a masterpiece unmatched.

I didn't play this game, I was 8 yo. But my big brothers did and listening to the soundtrack and spells sounds, swords, horses, brings me safety, to that childhood I had where I didn't think over the problems that surround the world, I didn't have depression, eating disorder and worries about the future . My brothers were like keepers that protected me and this nostalgia, even if I never played this in first person, feels so wholesome. Thanks for this :)

No other game has recreated the magic that UO had for me. Games these days have so many rules and it all just feels so damn artificial. Back in UO you had to be smart or you'd get scammed and that was just part of the game. The game was cut throat as hell but it brought the community together. There are reds at X location, people would group up and go hunt them. There's an IDOC, gigantic red vs. blue battle. Loved it.

This game changed my entire life for the better. I have never experienced anything like it. One of the most immersive video games of all time, and still holds up today in the free servers that exist. UO Outlands and UO Forever have done such a great job of keeping the true spirit of Ultima alive.
These days I struggle to go back because I remember old friends that I've since lost contact with, but I'll never forget them. Every time I hear this theme it legitimately brings tears to my eyes. Incredible memories, and there's still been nothing that has matched the magic that UO held for so many of us. The most amazing moments in Ultima Online was feeling like you were truly, left out naked and alone, in a dangerous wide medieval world.
Even walking down the alleys of a medieval city at night, with silence and calm, you COULD be mugged at any moment, or attacked.
But it still somehow wasnt totally crazy, it wasnt nonstop pvp all the time everywhere. Some people WERE nice, a lot of people banded together.
But it was the risk that gave the whole game the feeling that no modern games have.
I still remember times where there were DRAGON attacks in the main towns, some spawned by the game's creator himself (with admin tools) just to spice things up. It felt incredible that "story" events could happen anywhere, at any time (under human control).
Even standing in a "safe" town, you never knew...... Would a dragon attack? Would a pack of giants march in from the north following a fleeing player?
Could the NPC guards hold them off?
And....... What loot would remain on the carcasses, before being cleaned up by the survivors?
The feeling of being vulnerable in a huge incomprehensible world. That there was no quicksave to rescue you, there was no pvp-concent-button to unbind. There was no linear boring predictable grind. Because at any moment, anywhere, without warning, your linear progression could be snuffed out and reset to near zero.
EVERY hour mattered. EVERY play session was important to your overall growth ingame.
    NOTHING was for granted.
And likewise.. It worked in the opposite way too, not only in potential losses, but potential gains..
At any moment, if you were lucky, you could stumble upon a corpse or ongoing battle, and find riches in magical equipment that increased your net worth by 50x, overnight.
But then, you had to make the perilous journey WITH this loot, to a vendor to sell, or a player to sell (without being mugged).
You couldnt just scream into global chat about the riches you were carrying, you had to be smart.
Games like these dont exist now.

I was just a lad when I got my hands on this. My mother had gotten it from some people her company at the time were working with. She had no idea it was an online game, and didn't know those even existed yet-- to be fair, neither had I.
I was 14, I think, when I first touched UO. The Second Age was when I started, and Trammel did not exist quite yet if memory serves.
The Trinsic Invasion had just went underway when I started.
And I loved every minute of it. The constant danger, the level of interactivity with the world that nothing I know of has yet to match, the freedom with which you could travel, the many things you could do and the WAYS you could do them. Travel by boat and have a Tinker trap your gangplank, so if they try to steal your boat, they blow the hell up. Free loot!
Nothing is as free or interesting today as what UO offered, and that's pathetic considering how long its been.

There was a time when two guys stopped me on the road, and told me I had a special horse. It ran faster than other horses. They offered to pay me 100k gold for my special horse. In order to determine that this was one of the Special Fast Horses, they asked me to dismount it so they could get a better ID on this wonderful beast.
I did so. They killed my horse, and laughed as they ran away. There was no such thing as special horses. I learned a lesson that day.
And then to recoup my costs, I sold a few totally fake runebooks because I had no money at all. Got enough reagents as a newbie mage to defend myself while camping out a house that was in danger of collapsing. Spent 10 hours there, hiding and running from unleashed dragons, energy vortexes, and all manner of murderers.

I never played Ultima in it's prime, but there was something genuinely special happening through the 90's of people setting out to make virtual worlds, virtual societies, and all their design coming at it from that angle. These were less games and more experiments at giving people a virtual world to live in that was detached from their real life.
It's something we stopped pursuing into the 2000's, but I genuinely think it was ground-breaking and important work that was being done. I wish we kept on that path.

You would get a rushed version where anyone can GM 7 in a few days, and buy a house in just a few days. In the release days you had to die A LOT before you could save up for a house. I think that's what people miss the most, is the even playing field of everyone learning and it just can't be replaced.

Oh my, remember the first time you booted the game, the login screen came on, and you heard this? I still breaks my heart every time I listen to it, even in 2020 and still playing on an freeshard.

I even remember they day I bought this game and what shop it was and how it looked. It was so many years ago. The experience you had from this game and the people you met, nothing will ever come close.
