  • One of the things that makes life enjoyable on a farm is...automation! With chores a part of every day life, eliminating a task from any given day can be a huge help. Today we're installing an automatic water system for the ducks and turkeys. We're also showing a new fertilizer we'll be using on the farm from IV Organics.

    I think we have that exact waterer for our dogs in the back yard, I absolutely love it. We *do* have to clean it out regularly due to algae buildup, but it's a simple task. As far as poultry though, I've seen several interesting systems with watering cups, a bucket, and a toilet fill valve hooked up to a hose.

      I'm sure it is the same one. We picked this one up on Amazon and so far it's working well for the ducks. As you know, being able to unhook it that easy sure helps when it comes to cleaning out the gunk!

    This is such a great idea! I have 2 questions: how do you keep the green stuff growing in the barrel? And wouldn’t the water get piping hot in the summer, so the birds aren’t having the chance to cool down with fresher&cooler water?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  Год назад +3

      Hey Melissa, great questions. The barrel is solid and does not allow light to penetrate, so algae is not a problem for us. We've been using the same setup for the chickens for a couple of years now and no algae in the barrel.
      As for water temps, your poultry is not going to mind either way. Unless it's boiling water, they're going to drink it down one way or another. That being said, we do have this positioned so it's shaded in the morning by the coop and then in the afternoon by the tree somewhat. That helps keep it a little cooler, but again the birds won't care either way. Much like all of the wild birds all around town drinking water from wherever they can find it in the middle of summer.

      Sean, we have never seen this much fruit set. We had a tree lose a branch to fruit set this year for the first time since we've been growing in AZ (over 12 years). That Winter weather we had really did wonders for these trees.
      The geese are primarily here for guard duty. They do a very good job keeping aerial predators at bay and the male makes it very clear to anyone approaching that you're not welcome!
