What was Feudalism in Medieval Europe?

  • Feudalism was a system of social society present during the high middle ages in Europe between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. Feudalism can be understood as a hierarchical society where the king owned most of the land, he would distribute it out to lords, who would then lease the units of land to the peasants and serfs. The units of distributed land are known as fiefs, the king would give fiefs to the nobles, and those who received them were known as the vassals. The serfs and peasants were tied to the land they leased, and in return for the land and protection given to them by the lord, they would give regular payment of produce. This social hierarchy is often displayed as a pyramid, with the king at the top, then the lords, knights and peasants and serfs at the bottom.
Eventually, by the 13th century with the rising popularity of coinage, money was paid by the lords to their sovereign instead of offering military service (which worked out fine since the monarch could use the money to pay for mercenaries instead). Money was distributed by the monarch instead of land, and both a rich merchant class grew and serfs were able to buy their freedom. All of these factors working together gradually weakened the mediaeval system of feudalism built on land ownership and reciprocated loyalty.

There's social hierarchy, military service and an economic relationship between the different parties. The spread of money decoupled economic relationships. I understand tenancy, military service as economic activity. What puzzles me is the social hierarchy.

No! I wouldn't want to live in the medieval days when Feudalism is practiced. A major reason is the clear distinction in social class. Secondly, it is very undemocratic
Finally I'll say that Feudalism came into being as a result of exploitation of people who couldn't defend themselves from Anarchy in Europe.
Thanks allot ❤ I really enjoyed this Video

After feudalism came the absolute monarchies, and those were worse imo. Bigger wars and more royal decadence. During the feudal era at least a king couldn't afford to get fat because he was meant to be leading the troops. Would be nice to have the more commercial, monetary dynamic with social mobility alongside the more feudal obligations the leadership would have to honor.

Fiefs were mostly an estate given by a feudal lord to his Vassal in return for his loyalty or service usually military service. The King gave fiefs to Dukes and Earls, they were The King's vassals owing direct allegiance to him, similarly Baron's were vassals of Dukes and Earls, Knights were the vassals of Barons for whom they did military service, Dukes to Knights were the feudal lords, with every feudal lord except Knight being first a vassal and then an overloard with a no. of Vassals under him. They didn't own any land but held it as of his overloard, they had the peasants to cultivate it. There were many classes of Peasents the most numerous being serfs who were not free but were attached to the land

Congrats to the people who said that serfs were the lowest on the social ladder of feudalism! @World History Encyclopedia great idea to get people to view this video by having that fun little poll about the levels of society.

I disagree that feudalism in common for England and Europe. Academically, the term feudalism is avoided to use. The term feudalisms (the plural one) could be more applicable for the Mediveal times because the feudalism in England much more different than France's feudalism. William the Conqueror, as u mentioned, centralised England, and that created an another feudalism understanding; however, at first, France, the rest of Europe and also Japan had different understanding on feudalism or the vassalage. I think, these must not be forgotten=)

I think every society in medieval days has practiced feudalism in one form or the other....as land was the only source of wealth and economy as a result was primarily agricultural.
As In india varna system was very similar to this...the four classes each with different functions... brahmina (priest ),kshatriya (warrior ), vaishya ( majority land owner class ) and shudra ( labour class).
Agrarian socity + asymetric power structure produced some variation of feudalism in every society...
In india we can still witness some mild form of feudalism in rural areas.

Maybe have better lighting. Eliminate the shadows on the left of the screen, and use a softer light to reduce the highlight on the face and the globe. Also 1 minute in, still not into the subject. Asking people for Patreon in the beginning never would ever work. Good work does not need any invitations for compensation.

Technically feudalism had its good perks over our modern corporational model (as we can’t call it fully capitalistic anymore).
Most important difference that people fail to notice is that under feudalism your life would be far more valuable, since a lord couldn’t get more productive underling and toss others aside like our corporate overlords can.
Sure, the quality of life was worse than it is nowadays, but that is mostly due to the current state of technology and exploitative overproductivity. Besides, the divide between the poorest and the richest was never before greater and when it comes to social mobility, it is mostly rhetorical as it is still mostly the case that if someone is born into working class family they stay working, while the rich only get richer.
Sorry for poor grammar -english is not my primary language
