For her to not even give him the option, it breaks my heart. At least allow him the choice to take his football career or be a father. Fatherhood is the best thing in this world. I think perhaps he was supposed to meet her outside and never did. So she drove away. His car shows that he was there (home) and chose not to come out. I think he chose his football career over going to California with her and starting a family. The ending about how he wonders where they'd be if he "never scored that last touch down," means if she didn't get pregnant. Would they have kept dating? Gotten married? etc. Also could signify that without the touchdown he might not have had the pressure/pull of a football career.

If you’re looking at the population, about 2/3 of it is made up of the prison population because there are two large prisons that are added into the town’s numbers skewing it greatly. My great grandparents moved there in the 1940’s, my grandparents graduated from this high school, my parents did, and I went there as well. I can safely say it’s a small farming town.
