The mirror edge is handy when you're engaging multiple attackers and you have to see what's going on behind you. Also useful to check your hairstyle once the job is done.
I bought this & the deluxe bag with it. The deluxe bag allows for 2 extra sets of stones. But a nice surprise was the angle guide, eraser & jewlers loop also fit in it. So with the deluxe bag I carry the 200/600,800/1000 diamond grit stones with the 1200/1600 ceramics, digital angle guide, eraser & Jewlers loop. Makes it about 1 1/2 inches wider that is it.
Very nice of you to give it away. I have one on order, I already have some extra stones and lapping film, I also have a large lice of wood and some bolts with handles to mount the system too as I note it has predrilled holes for it. The price over here is half the cost of the 120. Hence this model, I also have the angle guide so am prepared to spend a bit of time getting it right. Mirror edge vs non mirror edge? Well it matters for some chefs, like sushi chefs, my reason? I make knifes, they sell better with a mirror polish, I borrowed a Frankenbuild 130 and got mirror edges with minimal effort, these sold faster than my non mirror edge knives, so I thought I would give it a go, but am not super convinced so am getting the go to try and modify as needed, if I don’t like it then no big money loss.
I knew that some chefs put a mirror edge on their knives, but I didn't think about how it could effect the sale of a knife for knifemakers. Good info! I hope this system works for you--the Go will give you a good idea of what the Wicked Edge systems are capable of. Thanks for the comment.
I ordered this today as my first real sharpener.. I have tons of midtech/customs and never got into sharpening. This is my first, and I assume it's good enough for a casual sharpener. I won't be making every knife perfect and mirror polished like the sharpening snobs.
...LOLOLOLOLOL........................Sharpening nobs, you got that right. I always wonder why so many snobs worry so much about getting that mirror finish. 99% of the time the knife is in your pocket or in sheath or using it. Are these guys standing around calling people over saying "Hey look how shiny I got this here knife".
There are so many things that could make this thing perfect. KME type clamp, and sticky rubber bottom with a steel base would solve basically every issue wrong on this. And making a base out of pot steel instead of aluminum would make this cheaper and better.... 💩. Great video and excellent review.
I would like to think of this as an add on to the WE system instead of an entry level completed system. Much like how the sharpmaker is an add on to any other sharpening system. Now this doesn't mean it can't flex into a complete system (I spent 150$ overall just to make mine a completed system), I still believe that the WE system is the best out there, even with its flaws, but there is just no entry level for it.
I’d say 97% of people who put a mirror edge on their knives do it because it looks cool (to them and some others) and since it can be a pain in the butt to achieve, they feel shows a high level of sharpening skill or time employed in sharpening the blade. As for real world applications? Eh... However, Clay Allison, who I believe owns Wicked Edge, has a video discussing and showing how he puts a micro-bevel on his blades and a portion of that is a mirror edge if I remember correctly. It’s on RUclips and worth the like 6 minutes it takes to watch the video.
After getting all the accessories for this, it would make a great travel companion, after upgrading to a more expensive one for your main sharpening. The accessories are the killers in price, for the initial outlay. It gives you time to master your technique, or decide that this is more than good enough! Good things get broken or missing on every move, & young people are going to have a lot of moving in their lifetime. This is plenty good until they get permanently settled. With the the cost of the better systems, you could buy a few good knives, & have them sharpened. This will do the trick in till you can afford the nice systems, & then not have time to use them
I am guessing that if people use this for sharpening a straight razor made of good metal, they would want to use the micro paste stop and get a mirror edge. That's the only application where i think i care that much. It makes for a noticeably more comfortable shave.
Your iPhone has a free angle app and you don't need the Angle Cube. However, grow a pair and just buy a cheap King 1200 Japanese Waterstone and learn to freehand sharpen. Go to a Goodwill and buy a cheap knife or two and commit to muscle memory required to sharpen a knife with no gizmos or gimmicks. Don't fall for the gadgets, you can't carry all that shit into the woods. In a pinch, you could find a river rock and get your knife shaving sharp if you know how to freehand sharpen. It's not that hard, keep the angle consistent and take it slow. Create a bevel and when you get a burr all along that edge, you are done with that side, flip the knife over and sharpen the other side until it has a burr, then strop (trailing edge strokes) to remove the burr and you have a sharp knife and none of the wasted $$ on a gadget.
Yea this is NOT a entry level Wicked Edge lol, the angle adjustment is really only a estimation on any wicked edge system, so you need a “Angle Finder” regardless of how expensive your wicked edge costed you. I have about $370 invested in my Wicked Edge WE50/GO model, it’ll all be shipped here Monday. If you call that entry level, your nuts! I’m a noobie at sharpening, and I knew I had to buy the system, a few extra stones, Diamond strops, and a angle finder. And, there you have it! Nearly $400 for a entry level sharpening system lol! I bought the WIcked edge GO/WE50, and 800/1000 grit Diamond stones, and 10/14 diamond strops, with an angle finder! I’m still laughing that he mentioned the angles are not accurate lol. Well, there not built to match every knife you have lol. You require an angle finder.
Hi Stephanie, I called this the "Entry Level Wicked Edge" because it is the cheapest option in the Wicked Edge line and has the most basic features. I did not mean this is entry level for all sharpeners, only that it is entry level for Wicked Edge. An angle cube is the best way to get the correct angle on ANY system. Also, I mentioned the blade height affecting the angle because some newbies may not understand that right away. This video is meant to be educational and to point out WHY it's important to have an angle cube on hand if you want the most accurate angles possible. I wish you all the best with your new Wicked Edge Go. It's a great portable option and a great budget option, however, I prefer my Wicked Edge Pro Pack II due to the micro adjustment feature and the versatility and sturdiness of the base. With the Wicked Edge Go, you have to have a surface to anchor it to with a clamp or screws. It doesn't work with every table unless you have multiple clamps or anchoring options on hand, which defeats the purpose of the portability. I found that without the micro adjustment feature, the Wicked Edge Go is finicky. You can get your angle picture perfect, but the amount of time it takes to set it correctly is too great. With the micro adjustments on the other Wicked Edge models, you'll be sharpening in no time.
Not for me... that's not what I think of when I think of portable. It's huge and weighs 4.2 lbs. And for what that costs, it shouldn't have any flaws. I use a small two sided stone from Spiderco when I'm hiking / traveling and it comes with it's own strop (a leather case) and it gets the job done well enough that I can shave with the blade. IMO, if someone's goal is to have a sharp knife, they should put in the work and learn what the angles feel like so they don't need to carry around a huge overpriced device to keep their knives sharp. Of course every device has it's market, and I'm sure this is perfect for some people, just not for me.
It seems to me the goal of this tool is not only portability, but repeat-ability. I wouldn't think you would get that at all with a loose stone unless you've been sharpening for a while, and at that point someone with that level of expertise likely wouldn't be looking at a system like this...
The mirror edge is handy when you're engaging multiple attackers and you have to see what's going on behind you. Also useful to check your hairstyle once the job is done.
If it is in your shop, then BOLT it down to your shop table, or on the 2x4 that is C Clamped down to the table itself.

Debating on getting this! What other sharpening system would you recommend over this?
Cant you just micro adjust by using an angle cube and setting the arms in between the pre set lines (anywhere you want)?
Never had problems sharpening my full flat grinds with the wicked edge.
Could you use the holes along both bottom edges to mount it to a table?
That's exactly what the holes are for.
What's your opinion on the wicked edge 66

Yeah, I see what you mean, I think with any mobile sharpening setup they won't be as good as a bench setup. However I still really like it!
what about WE vs TSPROF?
Why do I need a mirror edge? I don't know. Why do I need a 500 dollar titanium frame lock pocket knife? I don't.
Cade Johnson I like the way you think. Those mirror edge sharpening jobs don’t last for me on anything.
A valid reason for a mirror edge, you ask?
BECAUSE I FUCKING WANT ONE!!!
That's my valid reason...
I guess you're not a knife snob.........
I’ve heard a mirrored edge can fight off rust for longer...maybe beneficial for something like a neck knife
I’ve got a WE Go and an M4 940 coming soo I may have to test that theory
Is this system all metal?
I find a mirrored edge helps with detailed wood carving, but isn't required.
The higher grit you polish the longer the edge will last. That’s why to polish to higher grits.

Mirrored edge: to look good for the ladies!😉 Really though, just for cosmetics. The same reason people buy $200 sneakers.

You take a knife sharpener on the road.....?
I'm a big fan of the KME......everyone has their own opinion.

Thanks!
14 min video and you don't even mount a knife and demonstrate. WTH?
Just download a protractor app on your phone instead of buying the angle cube
I'll just stick with Benchmades LifeSharp so I can save money for more knives...
@Zane Blaire Yeaa after a year I ended up getting the Gen. 3

My religion does not allow me to have mirrors in the house. I cheat by making a mirrored edge on my knives.
This just made my day. Thank you!

I like and want a wicked edge but.....too damn expensive! Greedy company imo
I gotta have a “mere” edge.😂
That thing sucks, I could get similar results with my 25$ knife sharpening kit from home depo
