IK you might not see this, but I LOVED DW8 Empires. It was such a fun romp for a sandbox DW experience. Sure it had flaws and could be rough and dull from time to time, but the sheer amount of raw, unfettered, customization, was where it well and truly shined. You could make custom characters, campaigns, factions, set up custom battles with any character you want (which in my opinion should be a universal free battle mode in ALL Dynasty Warriors games, even the regular ones and XL, its a simple concept), and the DLC was fine too.
I loved making up cute little storylines as I played the game, and it was all in all a great experience. I believe I made a game campaign where you played as the crusaders versus the generic sultanate, and the crusaders were typically disadvantaged but as they were THE disadvantaged faction, you were meant to play as them and carve your way through the campaign map.

I do like DW8 really, it's a fun to create so many storylines and scenarios. But I HATE that you need to unlock every single character personality by playing through the game multiple times through different weaves and paths. Granted this might make for a great way to fashion "origin stories" for your customs, but there's just so much repeated playings you can go through before you ask yourself "Why am i doing this?"

Given how huge the open world is, and how little there is to do in it, Dynasty Warriors 9 just might become a truly memorable experience - once skilled modders have the opportunity to flesh out the game with actual content. Imagine Dynasty Warriors: Skyrim. It doesn't all have to be serious content, either. I'm picturing a scenario where Xiao Qiao challenges the player to a gliding contest, climbing to the top of the game's tallest peaks and then seeing how far they can fly using fan weapons for wings. (These are Chinese superheroes, so why not?) Epic rewards for those who can land on a watchtower, and a teasing for landing in water instead. Minigames like this can add character to any open world experience. The world is there for people to play with. Koei themselves might be able to use this open world as the basis for the next Orochi title, now that I think of it.

I remember the interview they had before, "due to fans asking for the return of the open world in Empires even though it was going to be dropped initially". Which means they weren't quite sure how to shoehorn it in and it absolutely feels like an afterthought.
Good point. Your character should not be in defensive battles in where you are not stationed. Maybe if you selected the secret plan for allied reinforcements, succeed and your character appears, the game can ask if you want to switch characters.

Things that the devs need to do to improve the DW series:
    1. Open world is fine, but take world design lessons from the Elder Scrolls games, and make the environments rich if you're going to do it that way.
    2. With the Empires games, allow us to manually choose where to deploy each unit, allow us to customize objectives required to activate an ambush at set locations, and let us choose the primary and secondary unit types of said units. Take some inspiration from Age of Empires' own scripted conditions, and let players have some degree of choice in such matters, with balance in mind.
    3. Actually look at player feedback, and take the top 5 things that were most well-received and incorporate them into each future installment.
    4. Get some feedback from the game designers of the Atelier series and get ideas for things that will actually engage the player when they aren't in a battle.
    5. Change up the visual style from time to time.
    6. TAKE YOUR GOD DAMN TIME and fix as many kinks as possible while improving visual fidelity. Change the engine to Unity or Unreal if you have to.

      I wanna add
The game is great have some great new features but also so many bug and terrible features
      Good new features :
-have special interaction between a family or a love ones
      -have a parents syst
-have a great design from combination of two characters from parents
Bad or some bug features :
-To many cut scene in the battlefield (zoom to an officers or creation officers when they finally meet)
-Can slow mo attack on all enemies (finishers makes the battle and time taking to long)
-in chaos mode it is almost impossible to win (enemies have a very high health even with your high level and an epic artifacts it wont help)
-your base might not survive (your allies cant even defend one base)
-Your officers might stand still not doing anything (your command on the officers still doesn't do anything, but only the accompanying will work)
-enemies to much respawning (very annoying they just keep respawning even in at 100 Morales in the enemy team)
-Sometimes the horse just stuck to an invincible wall when there is no wall there

One of my biggest issues with the Empires series despite them being my favorite of the warriors franchise. Is the DLC outfits that are resold in every game. They also seem to gut things from the game that made other empires games great.
I honestly want them to go back to DW5E idea with strategy cards. Like for example ambushing or flooding certain maps.
I feel like open world was a curse for them due to the lack of power on consoles.

What fans want and what Koei are capable/willing to add to the games are likely two very different things. An open world could be great, but they need to implement the features accordingly. In the base DW9, your actions never had consequences, so there was so no incentive to venture far beyond what was necessary for the quests. Why fight random brigands for bases that will serve no purpose. The stories of characters for DW9 were so linear, it would never have an impact.
For Empires, the open world could have worked, but I doubt Koei has any intention of putting in the work necessary to make it a better experience. Yeah, you could tell a mile away that the main focus for this game was to pull people in with the CaW, offer limited basic features, and charge a bunch for DLC that has a mere fraction of the features that fans could imagine. That panda costume DLC is atrocious, many of the armors have big wings that look awful and are likely to clip through everything. The clothing options in the base game include knight armor, samurai armor, and more present-day school uniforms that hurt or kill the immersion of the world Empires games could create.
They could have fixed some of these options easily, like why not include more armor designs centered around the character cards from DW Blast? That way, we could make our own renditions of said characters that will feel appropriate to the timeline of the events of the game? You could even include the lesser era-appropriate clothes and armor in DLC, where it can make sense to get a bit more creative. Heck, you could turn the character costumes into parts for CaW, allow people to edit the colors, and make a varied look that would be perfect for the game. You can do the costumes from the main game of DW9, or even do older games costumes. Fans of the series would probably have eaten that up.
The Musou thing is no surprise since they went back to the long bar method. Musou attacks just become a continuous weapon swing animation with a slightly different ending attack; compared to the more unique musou attacks in DW7 and DW8, it would be nearly impossible to make many of these feel unique enough to warrant giving the option to change musous. FFS, they couldn't even bother to add new EX moves or musous to any of the DLC weapons either. So no matter what, if you use a DLC weapon, your musou and EX attacks will still be based on the original attack animations.
But there I go, wanting things I know Koei lack the willingness to do for fans. It really sucks to like these sorts of games sometimes, since outside of the rare curiosity (and games like Sengoku Basara, Senran Kagura, and the FATE games) hardly anyone will go out of their way to make a game series similar to this style. While I want competition, what I really want are more games made with this style so I am not feeling like it is either DW or bust. Heck, I'd love to see this series bloom and reach its potential fully. Most of the fans' criticisms all come from a source that wants to see these games succeed. But for all of the lofty and ambitious ideas we have and share, we also need to be fully aware that Koei's focus is more on hashing together assets to make some money off of the people still willing to pay to support these games. I will likely get this game still in February (though with Lost Ark finally making its USA debut, and games like Elden Ring in the fray) I will have a hard time trying to justify my willingness to spend full price on this game.
Sorry for a bit of a rant, since I know not many (or any) would read this, hope people enjoy the game regardless. If you don't buy it or wait for a sale, awesome, and that is the logical conclusion to take. Fun can be had here, but we are always, but we are mere ponies with Koei dangling a carrot on a string. No matter how much we pay to get it, we may never get the full experience we have in our heads.

to me the ideal Warriors Empires game is take everything from 8, add the removed "every character has a bow" mechanic from 4 back and the swimming and ladder climbing (the only 2 good things to come out of 6 imo), the best way the could incorporate an open world into that is by having it where, when out of planned battles, you can visit towns and cities in the section your capital is in (keeping the open worlds small but allowing for more to be within them from a content standpoint) and to sweeten alliance or trade negotiations you can ride to the location yourself, bringing a total of 2 generic officers or 1 major officer and their units with you for random bandit attacks.

To be honest, the stroll mechanic wouldve been better if it had either more activities you could do with someone, and/or having randomly generated battle activities happen when you choose to go out in the wild, that would count towards training or contributing merit. Like, it would be cool to move around and find a group of neighboring enemies attempting a sabotage, and you get affected if you ignore them/get defeated by them, and gain the favor of the people if you thwart them (like when you defend an area when being invaded).
Another good thing wouldve been that increasing friendship with officers, they would give either their armor costumes, or armor based on them.

At least Team Ninja seems to be able to keep delivering, FF Origins is going to be bonkers and I bet we’ll get another new Nioh-type game announced by the end of the year. Maybe they can apply the Nioh formula to RTK somehow.

I'm glad you brought up the fact they decided they didn't want to spend money on voiceactors. Even back in DW9 normal a lot of people were giving a free pass for... no reason? Feels like I'm living in a simulation while I was playing it and everyone ignoring that. I didn't pay for 9E because no way in hell after how 9 turned out and disrespected us, but it was still bad.
Overall between this and other games I think I'm not messing with Koei again despite basically growing up with them. Like, I'm still mad they had promised us English voiceacting on Twitter for DW8E and but had no intention of doing it. Now all this stuff with 9 and 9E.

Jokes aside, great review. I think the disappointment is clear in your voice and tone, Koei cutting corners and pulling the Pokemon strategy of not carrying over features from past games, charging full price for a game that used to be $10-$20 less than the base game, and including that sweet, sweet overpriced DLC of OLD costumes should really make anyone think twice about paying this game. And that's not even factoring in the woes of DW9 itself or the whole English version debacle at release.
Also, whoever took those pictures for this video is amazing! You should totally hire him.

The real problem with the game, and I know I'm screaming in the void with this, is that unlike DW6 this game did too many things and out of them only one was a good idea for an experiment. Not all of them, just the one. The open world itself. Granted, it would still sacrifice a ton of fidelity, framerate, it would have problems up the ass, hilarious imbalances with the items like you have demonstrated so many time to everyone's heart's content and meriness, the textures that seem to constantly be at odds with each other resulting in things like the textures for skin belonging to a PS3 game, the clothes belong to a blurry PS2 game and the environments...let's not talk about it.
But if it tried only the open world, it wouldn't be so bad, we would still have all the movesets and systems from DW8, all the characters would have their unique weapons and the newer ones could get the DLC ones or the ones that were abandoned, they'd still be mechanically very advanced for warfare, they could equip two weapons or even if they didn't, every single one would be unique etc. The trigger attacks are clearly inspired by various other Musou-likes, particularily the Fate Extella games made by former Samurai Warriors developers, so it's no surprise that Samurai Warriors 5 managed to do the whole Action Trigger thing much better than DW9. The story would have taken a hit as well as the presentation but the idea of having the open world as a hub for sieges, testing different builds with the verticality and insanity present in open worlds would honestly be an ok experiment in hindsight. It would also fix some things in the Empires expansion IMO, as character creation wouldn't be as limited due to the very broken gameplay and physics system.
DW9 is the Final Fantasy XIII of Koei, it sucked so much money, so many years of development went to shit and nothing came of it because neither the technology nor the knowledge to develop such technology was there. We had the Dragon Engine made for this game which might as well occupy the same space as the Crystal Tools and Luminous Engine of FF13 and FF15 and I doubt they'll recover easily, they're in the same phase SE was with FFXV many years ago as well and now the other venues that perform better will influence this product. I expect in the coming years, Dynasty Warriors 10 to have not only the stupid wuxia systems back like Strikeforce, not only for it to be a reboot like SW5, I expect it to adopt a gameplay style similar to SW5 and make it even crazier, just like FFXVI tries to overcompensate now and I expect it to be helmed by Tecmo guys instead of Koei guys as well, just like FFXVI is helmed by former Devil May Cry devs.

Loved DW3 when I was much younger. It had arcadey-like sounds even though it would be categorized as a hack-n-slash genre, it seemed like a pivoting turn to the arcade beat-em-up style of games. That said, the empires games were quite interesting.
DW6empires was where I got to see some of the customization and possibilities really take off. Then DW7E, which seemed like a step up, but they also dropped alot of the free-officer and other activities you could do. Then comes DW8E which minimizes it further, but they also added the option of having children in the game. Then comes this game where I never picked up DW9, but the open world seems like it could have a lot of potential. But I think Koei-Tecmo will get the wrong lession. The combat especially didn't impress me, and I think that's part of what the combat has partly become. Since the soldiers typically melt like butter, the combat revolves around the idea of passing right through them and moving on. Which could seem fun and cool, but also can be a detriment from how watered down it is.
Speaking of empires games, it makes me wonder why they never bothered or considered adding SW4Empires to steam. Only to sony, and at best you'd have to get it through playstation network, until they shut that down and force people to pirate that product if they want a chance to play it.
I don't know what the hell the Tecmo side is thinking in the Koei-Tecmo relation of the department, but the skimping out of features and details with the intention of later putting them in as DLC is just bad practice in bad faith. It will only result in further alienating people and killing off the franchise faster because there's not enough microtransactions.

I would've loved the missions to return and be expanded on. They have a gigantic map, they have no excuse not to cut it like a lasagna and throw a generic mission objective into whatever chunk of land they want.
Them allowing you to edit your children as soon as they are generated is a huge upgrade, but then also a huge downgrade with restriction to it being post game. The best campaigns are the ones that go on for 150-200+ turns, and it's a bummer that I can't have a kid partway through like 8E.
I always complained about the outfit options in previous games, but never again. I wish they at least named the armors so I could try to make the intended matching outfits.
The lack of custom scenarios is an insane bummer. The end game for me was to make enough custom characters to make a unique scenario, recreating orochi and company, remaking samurai warriors characters, etc. to make my own warriors orochi empires and such. Now there is nothing to reach for with the edit system besides children and titles.

The cutscenes also sometimes happen infrequently as well you could be in the middle of fighting that officer then the cutscenes spawns out of no where. Another issue is when the secret plan cutscene starts while you are in the middle of an air combo resetting you and your enemy putting you at a disadvantage. I think another issue was I really had no personal incentive to use the open world feature of the game outside of decorating my hideaway.

You could customise the banner of your army, and the appearance of the soldiers in your army.
      You could customise your horse.
You could even customise Scenarios.. For example, you can make a scenario of a fictional faction made by you, filled with your custom characters, and the other factions of DW would unite against it, or something.

But to talk about the game itself, it was doomed from the start due to the horrible combat changes made in dw9, to make it even remotely enjoyable they'd have had to HEAVILY emphasise strategy to the point where combat is the side attraction and it doesn't sound that they've done that, the customisation seems incredibly limited especially around movesets, to sum it up, I can't see any redeeming part of this game.
