So Lopez isn't in this live performance but we have been told he wrote the drums for this song and played it on the studio version. Either way Martin Lopez is amazing.
I was at this show, it was pretty awesome. Devin Townsend opened, followed by Gojira, and Opeth closed the night! Both Gojira and Opeth released live albums from the show.
Martin did leave Opeth about 15 years ago I believe but all the albums considered the classics of Opeth were him up until Ghost Reveries. I deeply love system but this man played on some of the most diverse songs ever recorded, Opeth can have blues, jazz, 70s classic, thrash, death, black, groove, folk and classical music in their masterpieces. The amount of rhythms in one song alone is crazy, across several prog metal albums of this band is just ludicrous. He must be considered the greatest drummer who no one has heard of.
That's not Martin Lopez on the drum kit. He wrote the drums for the song on the album but he'd left the band by the time they recorded this performance. I believe that it's Martin Axenrot in the video.
Oh man. Just watching, and this is not Martin Lopez drumming, its Martin Axenrot, their last drummer (who left the band like 2 days ago), Martin Lopez was the drummer on the studio album thou
@@mcgreggor5543 yes, they issued a press release on november 16th. "Due to conflict of interest, Martin Axenrot is no longer part of the Opeth collective."

As others have correctly pointed out, this is Martin Axenrot on Drums not Martin Lopez, although no one could fault you for the mistake considering that Opeth's lineup is a constant revolving door. This is an epic, classic concert in it's entirety with the band and the venue. Keep up the excellent work!

I went to see their 20th anniversary show in the Royal Albert Hall... 3 Hours long, and is easily the best live show I have ever seen. Can't even begin to think how the drummer must have felt at the end of that.
I think that the Martin Axenrot version is deffinetly more intricate and more dynamic than the way Lopez played it. But both drummers are crazy and deserve a nomination.
Yes, Axenrot does not get enough attention. His style is different then Lopez, but certainly not less skilled as some claim. I highly disagree to that.
I imagine this song would cause a lot of people to stop it early on, if they aren't into metal that is. But I imagine most people who you force to listen from beginning to end will understand Opeth's genius afterwards. It's a musical tour de force and few people are as talented or creative enough to make music like this.
They definitely need to get to some Devildriver, could be "The Mountain", "Hold Back the Day", "Clouds over California", "Cry for me Sky" or "I Could Care Less". The point being there is a lot to choose from.
you need to check out Gene Holgan and I was at this show it was one hell of a show with Devin Townsend Gojira and Opeth and some good weed made it even better
Since the title is so similar, id recommend "throes of perdition" by trivium. You've listened to them before but you listened to a demo version of a song they re-did a few years later (where they did it better). The recording you heard would've been them in their early 20s and the frontman at about 17. Throes of perdition is instead from 5 or so years later and it's off of what many consider to be their best album. It's a great listen and is greatly evolved from what you got to hear.
And their front man Daniel Gildenlöw is as brilliant as Opeth's Michael Åkerfelt. They both write very original material, play the guitar beautifully and have incredibly strong and diverse singing voices.

I'd look at Dan Swano of Bloodbath for drummers as his drumming on "Ways to the grave" is brutally heavy. Eugene from Jinjer is fantastic, Mackie's drum work on the Saudade song Lions is killer especially with Randy Blythe signing.
