What a big shame? This hostel was never like this when I was a student there between 1983 and 87. It was clean and smells nice. Do we still have management in this institution?

To say their hostel is a pigery is an understatement. I hated the school when I went to write POST-UTME. I even told my dad I can't go there. But when I was offered admission, I had little or no say.
The problem is not increasing the amount. In UNEC, they increased the hostel fees from 3k to 9k, no pin was added to the building after the increment. I went off campus after 2years there. (I think they even increased it again before we graduated to 12k).
Even up till now, I still regret stepping my foot on that school. I hate that place.

Even if they pay more... that's more money for the VC... they will still not renovate or maintain it... it's such a pity that I graduated from the school and the current situation is not far from what it was when I was there, so I understand very well what you are saying...
Then in 2002 we were already using buckets as toilets to avoid infection and bathing in the bathroom was traumatic. Some how we survived but my child cannot attempt Uni in Nigeria. God forbid.
Nkrumah hostel used to be male hostel, it seems they have converted it to female hostel without any form of renovation. It's a shame.

Every management wants to leave an organization better than they found it, management of organization usually leave it worse than they found it. Those who are not able to pay should be substituted by the government.

My brother. Did you say maintenance? Which maintenance? Do we know the meaning for real. It's the same in every in institution In our country. Build big but maintain small or nothing. The same with buying cars we can't afford the cost of maintenance. The whole society needs an overhauling.

Too many student hostels are like this in Nigeria. My solution? Divest the universities of running accommodation. Let private companies run the hostels. Expensive but at least they will be maintained to a good standard. The universities can even put a cap on how much a private company can charge.

    • @judedike761
      @judedike761 3 года назад

@@egbubie Is this a Government funded institution or privately owned? If the former, the onus is on the Government to ensure a conducive environment for learning. Granted, the alumni can play a role whereby they can help raise supplemental moneys to fund programs. But the primary responsibility for maintenance lies with Government; the primary owner.
In my opinion, the issue here is lack of responsibility and maintenance culture. If Government is not able to run and maintain the institution, it should be privatized.

Enough shame to around, I am talking about generations of men and women who have graduated from this institute and done nothing about it because God knows it did not fall into this state 5 yrs ago. Personal experience, I still have nightmares of the facility in UNIBEN , with mounds of poop left for whole day. I don't know how it is now but the memory is stuck in my head unfortunately, it's like a dent in my psyche.

I visited UNN just recently and was earger to take a look of the Hostel were I stayed all through. Particularly RM 433 Mbanefo. I thought I could visit the current occupant and share my wonderful experience in that room. Behold the hostel(Mbanefo Hall) has become an abandon Hall. I stood still for a moment trying the recall the glory and experience I had on campus in this abandoned hostel. Suddenly tears started flowing from my eyes. I took a work to the Franco caferia it was not a pleasant sight to behold
The other Franco hostels were had heep of refuse all around.
Frankly speaking, I CANT NOT allow my child to seek for admission in UNN.
The learning environment now is not even good for dogs to breed
I took a few picture which I forward to my old colleague who graduated years back from UNN.
Questions that I kept asking myself were (1) Is that government have not been funding this schoo (l2) Is that the management of the school are not alive to their responsibilities.
The alumni need to swing into action. It is in deed worth weeping .
Parents who have their child in UNN should make out time to visit the school
Infact I visited the faculties. There was no meaningful and visible infrastructure to show that it is still a university.

@@santarosacafeteria9698 You are right. I should have spoken out immediately. That was why I shared they pictures I took with some old colleagues hoping it will ignite same anger or sad emotion. But they all allured the fault to cumulative government failure over the years. But now that it placed on this platform, wouldn't be a good idea for a collective follow up action to a rest the situation. It is better late than never. I believe this platform of focal point can be state point to champion this by first asking the university authority the necessary and right questions with regards to this eyesaw. Hope you are not just going to criticize me and just walk away. You will also be guilty of same if you do not take any positive action. Stay safe dear.

It's better for them to live off campus because even if they pay high amount, the situation will still be the same. They will just squander their money. They should live off campus, end of story.
