Nice experiment! I’ve been using sticky tack and double-sided tape on my contact mics for years, and just recently picked up a roll of Joe’s Sticky Stuff based on some recordist’s recommendations. It’s got terrific adhesion without leaving any residue, just tried it with the Marshmallow a couple days ago with satisfying results. Curious how it would compare to the others in an experiment like this.
Also curious if there’s a way to flatten those notches, or at least identify the cause 🤔
Thanks for posting this, and keep up the great work!

Thanks. I will definitely try out some of that Joe's Sticky Stuff, I never heard of it before, so thanks for the tip. I have a few theories about the notches, I'll keep thinking about it. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Though I like your objectification, I am missing the sound comparison here, like in the previous test. That's what couns in the end, isn't it?

    Hey, Mr Metal man!
Did you manage to get your CNC machine? I asked that question on your other channel but not heard back from you yet

dude. life is easier now. thanks.
bout the notches: guitars also have deadspots where selfresonance and the induced frequency cancel each other out.
maybe try this again on a very large plate where the pickup area becomes more spotlike in relation to the whole area. on that little box the minute differences might cause phase issues. in studio when stereo miking ,often its just a cm movement of a mic on a 50cm distance to the other to get back in phase.

Do you mean wolftones? As I understand it those are especially problematic with hollow body bass guitars and cello’s. If that is the origin, simply running a second identical test with just an added small weight on top of the box should move the position of the resonant peaks.

@@rivulus wolfromes? thats when my holowbody howles in fromt of the plexi, right? also some form of selfresonance… i think a smal weight might just dampen too little.

    • @rivulus

@@dasczwo no, that is feedback. A wolftone is an interaction between the vibration of the strings and vibrations of the body where some tones are amplified causing vibrations and others cancel each other out. With an electric bass, clamping a small weight to the headstock or placing foam behind the bridge can cause the wolftones to shift a bit so they fall between fretted notes. You do not need much weight to move the frequency of a wolftone. Completely dampening them is another story but often not needed.
So, for an experiment with the Mike setup in the video a small weight is enough to see if the peaks move and verifying they are indeed wolftones.

Can you repeat this experiment on a classical guitar top or something that was made to sound nice and loud?

Yes, Gimne a few weeks. I was thinking I could also have a robot strum the guitar in a somewhat repeatable way with different adhesives.
