José Carreras is one of the most successful tenors in the world. Now he wants to stop. The film, which brought him to sing, he looks at every now and then: "The Great Caruso" with Mario Lanza in the title role. "The film is now 65 years old, I have it on DVD naturally. Whenever I look at him, I enjoy it just as I did then, when I saw him for the first time. " PANORAMA : STAR-TENOR JOSÉ CARRERAS / Von Martin Scholz | Veröffentlicht am 05.06.2016 |
Yes I'm afraid there is something to your comment. But there are several matters to consider. Carreras was never the same singer after leukemia. And Lanza was dead by that age. Lanza ends his rendition with a really good a High C. Very few singers do that because they can't. Lanza wasn't chopped liver. I seldom listen to Carreras now. I still have the memories of what he was like when he first came to American opera houses.
My criticism is not restricted to Carreras singing "Be My Love" But also to Domingo and MDM. The song is not a favorite of mine but Lanza did it beautifully. I also think that Carrera's decline started in the early 1980s after taking on the heavier roles. But who is to say if his disease effected his voice before the diagnosis.I feel that the 1970s were his prime years. He seemed to sing with less effort and the voice was beautiful.
sugarbist I have posted a version of 'Be My Love' sung by Ricard Liszt. We used to sing together, A very nice guy who takes the high ending of the song unlike the three tenors you mentioned. I think he sings a B Natural. He went to Germany and sang Heldentenor roles. He retired from opera and to sing religious music.
Nice voice and great B- natural. He sounds like he starts a full tone down and when he sings the the word internally near the end, he then takes it to a beautiful B-natural
sugarbist I have sung with several tenors who have had great voices. But oddly enough I have never sung on stage with a really good Verdi baritone. I've sung with many, many baritones but all of them were medium weight or lyric. That's not what you would expect. Most men in America are baritones as voices spread themselves out in a normal (Gaussian) distribution. Most voices should be in the middle. Personally I'm a bass and my ex-wife was a lyric soprano. That meant if at a typical audition there might be thirty or fifty sopranos auditioning for the role of Susanna while there was only one or two guys signing in my fach (Bartolo).
I've loved this song since my young years, and in the voice of JC, what can I say? Just beautiful!
Mr. Carreras, this is wonderful!

an ill-advised venture. he never possessed the same vocal quality as lanza.. enough said...
You are totally wrong - enough said ....
It's not for him, too much straining and the broken English doesn't work for me. Ridiculous
