I use a 10" (255mm) blade on my brush cutter (a converted weedwhacker like shown in the video) at work, which I use for clearing overgrown roads and trails. I can clear woody vegetation up to 2" (5cm) without breaking stride (HINT -- with a blade this size hit anything under 3" (8cm) quick and fast like using a scythe; don't "saw" through), and to 4"+ (10cm) with little difficulty. Been doing so for over 5 years. Even to the point of breaking blades, which just fall straight down and stop with no fanfare. And yes, I've hit rocks, and had some of the carbide tips fly off. No big deal -- it has everything to do with the distance the blade is from you and angle the blade is rotating. Due to proper design, both are as close to ideal as possible in a real-world setting.
Sure, there are things one must keep in mind while using, and there is a certain skill set that develops for safe and efficient use, but it is no more dangerous than any other piece of equipment that has the potential for such destruction.

My dad bought a trimmer once and it came with a circular sawblade like that. The protector was made out of aluminum instead of plastic for obvious reasons, and it was recommended to never use it higher than the waistline or for branches thicker than 2 inches, for kickback prevention.
It was very useful for cutting the undergrowth in the forest, for clearing cross-country skiing and hiking trails

We used one of these for clearing brush out . Very handy for trimming small branches and sappling through a woody area. These are no more dangerous than a brush cutter blade with 4 prongs on which you buy from stihl for example. When me and my dad used these we just had a rule which was to approach each other facing the operator and not to assume we had seen each other. We used to give a thumbs up to say we had seen. Nothing worse than seeing people walk up behind the operator of these and stand there. Lets face it even grass wire will cut you to the bone. Always anticipate him spinning round to sweap the brush.

I’ve done this for years. Learned a few things that are a must.
1- don’t use a cheap brand blade. I’ve had them rip apart and send a third of the blade flying across my yard.
2- don’t allow ANYONE near while using in case the blade blows out (see #1 ^)
3- keep the blade as far from you as possible.
4- don’t force it or allow it to get pinched. Take your time and it will cut under brush and small saplings (up to 2” diameter) as easy or easier than the string cuts tall grass
5- wear sturdy long pants. NO SHORTS!
This combination can be WICKED. Be careful!
P.S. I generally use a 21 tooth carbide tipped blade. I’ve tried several sizes and the 21 tooth blade worked best for me.

Just be aware, without proper guards on a circular saws carbide tips can fly off and become very dangerous. As a former owner of a sharpening service I was constantly replacing tips on carbide blades. They will break and fly off if especially contacting rocks, concrete or or metal debris.

  • @KerryKugelman

Hoo boy. Cutting anything above knee height with this setup is asking for serious injury or worse. With any brush trimmer, cut low, slow, use more eye protection (goggles + mesh guard, like he has on), and proper footwear (i.e., not canvas sneakers). Better still, gloves and long sleeves (little bits of brush can hit your exposed arms hard enough to hurt). As to cutting through branches: even at ground level, anything more than a few inches in diameter calls for a chain saw (or sharp hand saw, if you're up to it). Just because this blade/trimmer combo *can* cut thicker wood, doesn't mean it is safe to do so. Certainly, never overhead.
As another commenter below mentions, there are pole saw attachments that are essentially a small chain saw to go at the end of the pole. Very efficient. Much safer than what this gentleman is doing. I'm not lecturing, just want to be sure we all practice safe cutting and minimize risk.

I've used circular saw blade on weed eaters (brush trimmers) for 30+ years maintaining 1-1/2 acres of rocks with very heavy grass and brush. I've found that it is 10-20 time faster than with a string trimmer (the most powerful string trimmer I could buy). I also found that the fewer the teeth the better and that carbide is a waste of money. I occasionally hit up a carpenter friend for old skill saw blades. They get ground down to nothing on the rocks in a few months but I don't care because they are free.

Yes, used all the time where I worked. Have one here too. Blade I have now has 4 or 5 long tangs which can be re-sharpened. For safety sake I dont use it up high and wear all the gear or be ready to lose whatever isnt covered! Good tool though.😺

I did this for years using circular saw blades on an Echo SRM 410U cutting down brush, saplings and trees up to 6" in diameter. Works great. I started doing this before these kinds of blades became available after having made a special washer to enable the saw blades to fit. And I know that the circular saw blades are not recommended for the RPMs these brush saws are rated for but I never had a problem. Never used a guard either. Experimentation indicated to me that it was more dangerous than not having one as you're always trying to maneuver around the guard. The frustration of doing so may cause you to lose your footing and be injured in a fall. Not from getting hit by the blade which is three feet out in front of you. Never even came close to having a problem except when an rare chunk of cut wood would be kicked back and hit me in the shin. Hardly even a bruise.

Around 1980, I had a gizmo made by Stihl - that was called the Brushette. It consisted of a belt driven head and extension assembly, which attached to my 16" chainsaw - replacing the cutter bar. It was a string trimmer, a triangular blade that was good for small brush, and a saw blade like the one in this video. It worked pretty good, but had several drawbacks: 1) it was heavy, 2) because it used a belt it would sometimes slip/stall, and 3) the change-out was a chore. Nevertheless it worked pretty well. My biggest problem was started the darned saw. By the time I got it running (no matter which bar or attachment I used) I was so tuckered out that I didn't have enough energy to work very long.

A little less crazier than the one that shows a bike chain as the "string". At least the Blade shouldn't fly off as long as the nut is tightened right. Those chains could let go at any time. Any "kick-back" is negligible or less of a worry because of a 4 foot pole between you and the blade. Not like with a chain saw where you have next to no clearance between you and the chain should there be "kick-back". As long as you don't "let go" of the weed eater, your fine. I wouldn't suggest it for "overhead" work, straight out & stumps of the right size. I could see that with no problem.

People in these comments going nuts about how "dangerous" this is. Compare the risk of this rig kicking back on you, with the blade a good 4' away, and a chainsaw kicking back on you, with the blade maybe 1' away and the pivot point that your hands make situated so the blade will kick back straight into your forehead. This is much safer than a chainsaw. Also if you're cutting limbs you're standing on the ground with this rig compared to maybe perched up on a ladder with a chainsaw?

We needed it for our yard, because we often got those little shrub weed-things that would end up a 1/2-inch thick if you didn't mow every single weekend. They were something neither the push-mower or the regular weed-eater could handle. And when I say "push-mower", I'm talking about what was basically just a manual shredder on the end of a lawnmower handle. None of that gas-powered or electric stuff - these kids that complain about having to mow with one of those don't realize how good they got it. Anyway, I imagine they stopped selling these saw blade types because too many idiots don't know how to use it safely. It's a fantastic thing to have around, though.

i did about two acres of very thick overgrown sumac with a setup like this with a ten inch blade. worked amazing. i recommend an overpowered weed eater as your tool of choice for this. i had a two handled one that could adjust the speed of the blade with a handle and it made it super easy to avoid over heating and even on the slowest speed it got work done, just slower lol.

Oh please I’m considering this. Can you help with more specific gear recommendation? I intent to tackle 5 hectares using this and I’m in a tropical forest area.

I made an adapter to use any table saw blade (carbide is the best) on my weed eater/trimmer. And I've used it like that for well over 10 to 15 years now. It will cut through most anything up to 6" diameter instantly. So you seriously have to keep everybody way back and use extreme caution so you don't cut yourself. A shoulder strap is a must!

Gary Mucher what did you make the adapter out of

I actually made it out of stainless steel. I turned it down to fit the shaft, which is smaller then the typical saw blade center opening, and then made it to also fit in the blade opening with a washer like section to hold everything tight. And if you chose to do that, use the cheapest carbide blade you can find. The less tips actually works better then a lot of tips. I guess it cuts rougher and therefore quicker. IDK.

Use a Stihl clearing saw blade designed for the job. Similar to a circular saw blade except they have don't have carbide teeth. They'll take the high rpm without shattering, which is what tends to happen with circular saw blades. You also need a more powerful machine - Stihl FS4600 series or above. And fit the correct metal guard. Perfect for small saplings. Useless on grass
