    6Gb for 20 mins seems massive overkill, given the original quality I am sure you could compress way more than that and not see any difference. I had a couple of random short VHS clips I wanted to digitize a while back - I did have a USB video converter in the loft somewhere but couldn't be bothered to set it all up just for a couple of clips, so just stuck my compact camera on a tripod in front of the TV and filmed off the screen with the curtains drawn, and the quality came out pretty good - and the camera stabilisation improved the video and I was cropping it anyway from 4:3 so worked out fine for a few short clips and much quicker/easier than dongles.

    I did all my remaining ones about a decade ago and back then I both still had a VCR and a TV card in my PC. and that card had a recording function. You can mess about with further upgrading via an editing suite but if you go too far with that you can lose some of the"historical ambience" that comes from older recording mediums.
    Great video though. I thought most VHS tapes had been done already or tossed in the bin

    Thanks for this video! Sort of a tech question....Say I want to record a live music performance. Do you think that if you had a "new" VHS to record on and the audio was being recorded on a reliable digital program that it would sync up? Or would the VHS not be constant enough? Any thoughts would be much appreciated though ultimately I think it is probably best to try it and see....

    Thanks Dylan, I have a load of VHS videos the most I want to convert are recorded on mini-VHS cassettes i used in a video camera I have the adaptor from mini to normally VHS cassette, lots of footage with my late Parents I want to keep I´m glad you mentioned the white humidity mould or whatever it is on the old videos I have some with the same problem a few years back I opened the VHS cassette and tried to dust it off and clean it however it still blocked the heads on the video recorder so when we have solved this problem please let me know.....another question I live in the canary Isles, what will be the law for me if I bring my Spark to the UK after Nov 2019, was thinking of coming sometime in the summer before the new law kicks in and get loads of B-Roll footage I might be able to use in future project. love your channel I´ve been with you since I bought my Spark in August 2017.

    VHS was actually really good. People remember VHS as dreadful quality, colourless, unsharp. If you got a decent machine, used good tapes and kept your heads clean. They really were pretty good.

    Hi, thanks very helpful. I have downloaded at least 10 different videos from my VCR onto the desktop of my MacBook Pro! I plan to bring them into iMovie one by one to edit. I started with the first today to find that the entire video comes in one block, not broken into screens. I need to do a lot of editing (like delete, shorten screens, cut some from current and make another different movie, etc) and wonder what to do. SHOULD I have transferred them directly into iMovie? I am confused. If someone can assist me I would love her or him forever!

    • @IkoptaUk
      @IkoptaUk  4 года назад

      Get a separate external drive for the Videos you burn, straight into iMovie won't change that IMO... I use these..amzn.to/3cntoJC or you just burn the clips you want on the video as separate files.. swings and roundabouts.. its a storage pain, but I would just burn the whole lot.. then its done.

    I've been using this software. When I plug it in, I can see the video and record it no problem, but the video keeps getting stuck (and hence it records that way), the audio is just fine. Is there a setting in general that one needs to be aware of to avoid that? When I watch the tapes on TV as usual, they work absolutely fine and don't get stuck. Please advise?

      I’ve had the same exact problem and the solution was to choose high quality instead of best in that particular window that you can set it in. It’s under the video settings menu. Not too hard to find.

    Wow the interface I use for my PC cost $9.99 on eBay, LOL. Same thing basically, USB to composite interface. BTW there is a VHS to USB player designed to copy direct to a PC. There is also cassette to USB and Phono to USB equipment. All of it is pretty reasonable with a bit of shopping.
    Something else to think about, if you have DVD's and CD's that are home made using the typical organic dye disks (not the gold Delkin and others) you will start getting mildew eating into the disk from the edges since they are not totally sealed. Might want to get them moved to better disks (Gold based) or Blue-Ray.
    Big problem will be in the future you will have you data in a format that no longer is supported. How many can still read AIFF files or Amiga Files (some of us have computers all the way back to TRS-80 Model 1, Amiga 1000, and Apple 2).

    The latest version of the Video-2-Mac kit works with M1/M2 Macs and is still available from the Amazon link on your listing. It comes with a software download link for Mac users who don't have a DVD drive. We switched from using VideoGlide to OBS Studio in November 2019. Works with Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur and Catalina on Intel and M1/M2 Macs. Connect any VHS player or camcorder to your modern Mac.
