- Oblivion's Radiant AI system created some amazing situations but it also came with it's fair share unusual problems. And that means coming up with creative solutions for those problems. But this one might not be as great as it sounds.

As I recall, npcs going to prisons was an early thing, but prison guards would kill them for their food, since prison guards weren't allowed to leave prison.
Were do you find info like that about the prerelease versions?

This is one of the biggest things I miss in Skyrim. I don’t blame Bethesda for removing it, but I still miss it.
I feel like they should work on improving it and consider putting in back in for the next elderscrolls game... skyrim just felt dead and even though they are potatos, oblivion npcs felt more real.
Improving it would take a lot of work that's not really worth it when that same work can be put somewhere more important. Even just making it at all was an impressive feat for the time. Still is an impressive feat these a days.
@@TheKabuto90 because of the massive cockup that was fallout 76 they need to make something exceptional for their next game (starfield or the next elder scrolls) in order to gain back any sort of respect at all. So I'd say bringing back and fixing the radiant ai system is the right step towards that.
I highly disagree.

Radiant AI is absolutely amazing, like really amazing. Even if it's bugged, and sometimes NPCs behave in ridiculous ways, there is no better tool for worldbuilding than this. Besides, it's worldbuilding that serves the player and the gameplay directly. As a kid, the idea that NPCs followed a schedule and I had to monitor them to know when to enter their homes and steal their valuables, not to mention the mechanic of making them eat poisoned food, was absolutely great. Too bad they scaled it down. This needs to be back at the forefront of future titles.
Beth decided to replace it with radiant quests instead. We all love those.
@@whisperuser7323 i unironically like radiant quests and think it should be in all future beth titles
@@feyenoord1821 yea, I actually do like them, however skyrim can do them a little bit better than by sending you to non important not quest related locations.
300% agree. The main problem was that NPCs couldn't go to jail or pay their fine, so if they *did* commit a crime, they kinda had to fight the guards.
Sadly I fear that future titles will become only more basic
I never found it strange because every NPC in Oblivion is the type to resist arrest over stealing a fork.

I've just started learning to program and it only makes me appreciate Oblivion's buggy glory more. Love the mechanical way you break down the quirky behavior!
Love that phrase: "Oblivion's buggy glory." It is what keeps pulling me back to the game over and over again. I love Morrowind too but it just doesn't replay as well because you just don't get all these accidentally provided by the software crazy, humorous moments there.

"it would completely undermine the option to resist arrest(...)"
That assumes the NPCs understand the rammifications just as well as the players, and wouldn't have any stat or personality or rng that determines whether they do or not.
Here's some ideas building off what you mentioned:
-The options to resist arrest, pay the fine and go to jail will be dependant on a character's personality and wealth. Hot headed characters would immediately fight, weaker and poorer characters would go to jail, charismatic and wealthy characters would pay a fine and be off. With paying your fine as well every character with this option could have a set amount of money to pay these fines, which they either expand if they're a merchant or thief or if they run out they go to jail
-For NPC's killed in resist arrest their bodies should despawn after a while or even taken to a nearby gravesite where they're prepared for burial, or do what Morrowind did and let the player have the option to get rid of a body
-If one prison is full and another NPC is arrested, the NPC who has been in jail the longest is released and the newly arrested NPC is placed in that cell
-There could be an option to free prisoners, if caught you'll get a bounty, if successfully freed your relationship with that NPC increases and could lead to them giving you secrets and items in exchange for their freedom
NPCs also have a responsibility attribute, that determines if they steal (under 30), and if they report crimes. (if they have a high disposition the the player, they are less likely to report) Bribing NPCs adds to their money.
They also have confidence and aggression attributes. Confidence determines if they flee from fights and aggression if they attack. They could even attack (high aggression) and when you defend yourself, flee (low confidence) Fleeing NPCs will even run to guards for protection, even if the guard is dead, but the guards won''t react in any way.
So with these attributes a high aggression value would mean the NPC is more likely to fight the guards. Beggars have little to no money, but would probably prefer prison, since it means they have some form of shelter.
And for the money, most NPCs have a job.
Let the job determine how much money they have and how quickly it replenishes. A Merchant would have as much as seen in the trade window (so selling to them increases and buying reduces the funds) But other NPCs would basically have a "wage" that gets added every couple days. That way they get money for pickpockets to steal, but also for the NPC to pay fines.
I like the idea that if a prison is full, the longest serving prisoner is released. But that requires a value on how much the prison can hold.
Perhaps they might even send prisoners to a different town. Especially the Imperial City should have lots of cells. And once released, let the NPC walk back.

After this video and the huge break he had I now know.... This guy is one of the developers of elder scrolls 6 and he is just uploading his complaint on what Todd wants the next game to have.
Haha
I kinda like how Bethesda created this amazing system, but then nerfed it because it wouldn't fit into their miniature towns of five NPC's. In a procedural worlds with thousands upon thousands of citizens in a big city, a system like Radiant AI would be amazing. The guild of thieves in such a city WOULD be a guild of actual thieves, doing their thing regardless of the player. That would be awesome.
the funniest glitch i found in oblivion, is when you join a guild, then commit a crime and go inside the guild with guards after you, your guildmates will defend you and sometimes go and kill all the guards
My favourite thing was setting off a forever war between the guards and the Arcane University.

Nobody :
The Cantina : 1 video per year
He had a problem with his microphone
"You'd have to make an exception for every NPC"
Idk why this isn't an option. There's not THAT many npcs, it would be tedious but a modder has done this for free
One time, I was wandering around a city (I think Cheydinhal) and saw a Khajit that I recognized as part of the castle staff sneaking around. I thought this was odd, so I followed them around for a bit. They snuck a circle around the town, then up to the castle, where they entered the barracks, and stole a piece of bread off of a table.
A table that a minimum of three guards were sitting at.
And was subsequently, almost immediately slaughtered.
Because the punishment for bread theft is DEATH.
What if they made it so that If every cell is occupied npcs would stop committing crimes until someone gets released
That would be smart but I highly doubt that it wouldn't lead to any problems such as the player going to jail while every cell is occupied
This is guy is a Oblivion expert he should get a certificate
He already has one
Once I was doing the thieves guild questline and was doing the mission where you have to plant the archmage's ice staff in that wizard's house. When I fast travelled to his district in the imperial city, he was in a battle with some npc's and some guards and tragically died. The quest proceeded to tell em to put the staff in this now dead guy's house so that he could return it to the arch mage.
Cantina, you should do a video about things to do after completing all quests! Is a very cool theme and i'm having a lot of fun in an old save on wich i have all itens and etc.

Hey The Cantina. I have a video suggestion for you: Oblivion Gates. How they work, and what you would do to improve upon them (as you know they're often cited as one of the worst or most boring dungeon type in the game).
Yayyyyy, I missed your videos so much

I've never seen an NPC confronted by a guard. I have seen them steal stuff off tables
Maybe this is not the time (or maybe it is due to everything going on in the world right now) but I think you unintentionally summed up perfectly why more and more government regulation to fix a problem can be a bad thing (in this case game developers are the government and npcs getting killed by guards is the bad thing being fixed). By constantly trying to put new rules and regulations in place to prevent a problem from happening, you inevitably end up creating new problems instead, sometimes without even solving the original problem in the best way.
So your saying since I only have Skyrim on my pc and have never played Oblivion. I should totally play Oblivion? Like buy it right now?.

The AI is one of the things that make this my favorite ES game
Time to binge The Cantina videos to celebrate his glorious return!
"Before it was introduced npc just did the same crap all day and all night"
Like skyrim
I mean they could make it so that if the prison is filled up, the criminal just has no choice but to either pay up, resist arrest, or maybe even flee the city for a day or two (And to save storage and prevent bugs, you wouldn't be able to find the criminal outside the city. They would just leave and go to the "void"), and then after that respawn and return to their daily lives. (to prevent problems with quests and such)
But since npc's don't do much crime anymore, that probably would never have to happen.
Actually you just need to tie the 'main' quests to positions, and let the NPCs be replacable. Then they can go to prison or die and nothing has changed all that much, you just fill in the empty position.
The one major thing that Bathesda does is fail to have the balls to let the NPCs really go out and what they want to do and just let the world just simulate itself. Fuck the end of the world and whatever cliche storyline they were going to put in. The players will get mad because they're not nut shotting dragons in five minutes - but fuck the players, they don't know what they want.
Just give the NPCs their behaviours and see what happens. Instantly you have a better game.
So will there ever be a elder scrolls game that has more advanced radiant AI and a effective jail system for the npcs without breaking the game? He really has been answering questions I always wondered about and now realize just how difficult it would be.
Endless prison, just have a new floor pop up with like 8 more cells, when they get full and a new prisoner comes, procedurally generate another. THen it would be saved in case the same people keep committing crimes.
OMG I MISSED YOU SO MUCH
Ima go play oblivion now!

It would be tonnes of time in the editor, for a gameplay mechanic that would likely cause conflicts with the tonnes of other mods players are likely to use.
Eh, the whole "creating a solution for a non-existent problem" doesn't really apply. It's a video game. The whole idea is that someone went out of their way to design something people want but nobody needs. You don't NEED a prison cell for an A.I. The point is that you CAN, and any player would cream their pants if they watched an NPC commit a crime, go to prison, and actually have to serve a predetermined amount of time. Sorry, but this video is literally anti-fun. You're just comparing how good the idea of something is to how difficult it may be to implement said idea, and with that attitude, none of these games would have ever been made in the first place

I genuinely think that Oblivion is possibly the only game that can be *this old* and still have this many people making videos about it that gain this many views... Seriously can you name one other 14 year old game that is still *this* prevalent in our culture? There are a few popular ones but not quite to this extent. I really can't think of one...
Crow The original Half Life? I mean sure but it’s nowhere near getting as much content as Oblivion... Half Life 2 is probably closer to Oblivion in terms of a dedicated online culture but I’d still say Oblivion takes the trophy by a fair amount. Channels with 100k+ followers in 2020 entirely dedicated to Oblivion, hour long analysis videos being put out gaining millions of views in the modern day etc... Oblivion is a phenomena.
glad you're back :)
