Can I just say bless your soul. For the past 3-4 years now I've been trying to find a way to learn this language, my mother refuses to teach me for fear of distraction from the other languages I need to learn for academics, and I only visit my homeland once every year and not for a very long time. When visiting, people just speak to me in English. Now, for the first time ever, will I be able to stand a chance at learning this "properly" and from a Lankan^^ I'm Lankan too I suppose, but I was born in another country, and under a different citizenship, but I'll always consider Lanka home^^ I hope you realise how much of a lifesaver and how grateful many Lankans born abroad must be to be able to re-connect with this beautiful tongue. Thank you!
Hi, and thanks for such an awesome comment! I can understand your mom's concern but whatever material I have put out so far has been quite basic so I don't think it should distract you too much from the other languages you're learning. Hey, about you being being "Lankan" or not, purely from the words you've used I can see that you're very affectionate towards Sri Lanka, so as far as I'm concerned, you are "Lankan" :). Thanks again for the comment and hopefully see you soon on my blog, in case you haven't been there yet.

Ive been learning alot of stuff abt indian languages but many linguists say sinhalese is very important for history of Indian languages. It escaped the dominance of sanskrit and retains some words in spoken version that may be older than 6-7000 yrs.
Good Tutorial Dilshan!! I am Indian and I have few friends in SL, they speak Hindi Language, so I also wanted them to surprise them in sinhala, the tutorial are fun to learn, easy and step guide is good enough to remember.. Istuti :)

Nice video. I'm Marathi & I'm always interested in languages & scripts. You should add Sinhala letters or spellings to help with pronunciations for those who are familiar with the script & may be also teach those who aren't familiar. Native script for the native language is the best way to learn proper pronunciations in my opinion coz Roman can get confusing for some.
Thanks Nikhilesh, that's good feedback. I do have some content packages on my site that focus on script: www.lazybutsmartsinhala.com. Thanks again for the suggestion.
Thanks, the American RUclipsrs who do videos don't really know exactly what the different letters and sounds are and don't really know how to write their mother tongue, bless them, but you go into detail

Hello Dilshan, I'm flying to Sri Lanka in a few hours and watching your video to learn a few Sinhala words. Time to impress my Srilankan friend tomorrow morning. ;) Thanks for the video :)
Hi Dilshan, thank you so much for the lesson. It is clear that you have a clear understanding of cultural English Language and also Sinhala Language. I will continue with your lessons, but wonder if I could pay for Zoom 1:1 lessons? I have in the last month managed to connect with my biological family (I was adopted) and need a crash course in Sinhala, to speak to my brother who is now a Buddhist Monk.
Hi Slim, first of all, I'm very happy to hear that you connected with your biological family. That's excellent. About the inquiry you made, could you please send me your email address as it'll be easier to speak that way? I've requested it from your RUclips channel's about page but haven't received anything as yet. Once again, congrats on finding your family. Thanks also for the kind words about the lesson and my approach.
I saw many videos of how to speak 'Korean', 'Japanese', etc. I'm actually glad that SOMEONE cared about teaching Sinhala! Awesome work! Or shall I say, Supiri wedak! Sri Lankan apita Adambarai! :D
You are BRILLIANT! This video was PERFECT with the audio, speed, visuals, review, practice conversations, and questions! I wish I had a resource like your videos with every language I've tried to learn. Thank you for making this available! Phenomenal work!
Hi Dilshan, you are a marvelous person - excellent voice, accent and presentation beside the excellent organisation of facts of teaching. It sensed to me as I'm also a language (German) instructor.
I usually don't comment on youtube videos, but this is just so well made i had to express my appreciation for your way of teaching. thank you a lot for this free key to a foreign language.
Thanks Jules, that's very cool of you to comment. I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully I'll see you on the blog sometime soon. Take care and thanks again.
You make it so easy to learn! I love your videos! It really helped going to Sri Lanka a couple of years ago. We are going to travel to SL again soon so I watch your vids as a nice brush up on my Sinhala! :)
Hi Dilshan,I have never seen anyone make learning a language look this easy.I had been to srilanka a couple of weeks ago and all I did was watch your video 3 to 4 times. You would not believe the number of friends I made.Well knowing tamil helped too.But your classes were just fantastic. So,I was wondering .Is there anyway you could conduct online classes for people like me?
Hi again, Harikishan. Thanks for the kind words, happy that it helped you. I just responded to your question about online classes in another comment you left. As I said, you'll find a lot of material on my website. All the best and thanks again for the encouraging feedback.
Thanks Andreea! May I ask why you're want to learn Sinhala? You can email me if you don't want the whole world to know :) You'll find the address on my website. Thanks again for the comment.

I am trying to learn how to speak Sinhala for this man Hasitha who I am really likes and is trying too impression. It is very frustration and hard language to learn such as Hindu
I’m from Australia and was born and raised there but my parents are sinhalese. I am suffering from ASD (Autism Spectrum disorder) which caused me to have speech problems to the point where I couldn’t even say a word until I was 4 years and 4 months old where I said my first word in SINHALESE on my mum’s birthday. Seriously that actually happened and that first was “amma”. I basically gave her the best gift she’s ever gotten. The problem is that I was being raised in Australia so I’ve been focusing on English far more than I’ve been focusing on sinhalese. It got to the point where I became so fluent on English but struggled so much in sinhalese. What makes it even harder is that my mum is really bad at speaking English (thankfully my dad isn’t) so she often speaks to me in sinhalese and mix them with a bit of english to make sure I understand. What’s even more painful is when I try to talk to my cousins and my other family members in Sinhalese (and yes I’ve been to Sri lanka 7 times and need to prepare myself for the 8th trip to Sri lanka) and a lot of them don’t even know English very well so when I have no words to say what I wanted to say I either get my dad or one of my cousin who knows English to translate it or try to say it in the simplest form of English. Although I did motivate one of my cousins to study English and now he’s pretty fluent on this language compared to my other family members. During my childhood I’ve was in a sinhalese class for about 5? Maybe more but I’m not sure but for 5 years and I barely learned anything. Hopefully this channel will help me a lot with sinhalese so I can talk to my family members properly and communicate with my mum better. Thank you Dilshan for giving me a little bit of hope.
What's my name? I loved reading that, thanks for sharing. Do me a huge favor and let's continue this chat on email (sign up here and you'll get an email from me: www.lazybutsmartsinhala.com/freebook) as I'd be very interested to know more about your journey and how I could help you further.

You can DM me at slim estrada on Facebook messenger
Hi Slim, first of all, I'm very happy to hear that you connected with your biological family. That's excellent. About the inquiry you made, could you please send me your email address as it'll be easier to speak that way? I've requested it from your RUclips channel's about page but haven't received anything as yet. Once again, congrats on finding your family. Thanks also for the kind words about the lesson and my approach.

+evert friberg Thanks!
