You can upgrade Up to 40gb of RAM. To become 40gb you need to buy one stick of ram size of 32gb ddr4
That model of laptop x1605va-MB984WS has 16 gb ram (8gb onboard(built in) + 8gb sodimm (means replaceable) , so the maximum capacity of ram for this model is up to 40 gb. You need to buy 32gb size of ram to become 40gb. And there are no problen when it comes to performance
