I've been working on a Pacific Rattlesnake Walking stick.
It's all shaped up, and now it's ready for scales!
I used to create all of the individual scales with carving tools. But it took way too long.
So I decided to stamp the texture into the wood with a wood burner.
It takes me about two days to get them all done.
I like the pattern on this type of snake. Probably because it's the kind of rattler that lives in my area. And I've spent my whole life trying to avoid stepping on one.
For this project, I'm going to try something I've never done before.

@@StinnettSticks amazing workmanship. I have to admire the time you take and the detail you take in doing these projects. I don't know that I would want to take a cane like that out in public. Perhaps they need to be in a museum. Or on stage with the bearded Brothers of the Blues Texas you know rattlesnake country. I'll never forget the ZZ Top concerts I've been to.

Two reasons why I would never use one of your walking sticks. First being that they are a work of art and should be showcased, second they are so realistic that they are unnerving. What a special talent that you have been given.

I did my first snake walking stick recently, as I grew up in Australia I copied Mikes red bellied black snake but with a skull on top and gave it to my grandson for Halloween, no where near as good as Mikes but I was delighted with the comments people made, hopefully I can get better as I go on, but Mike Stinnett you are the inspiration and undoubtedly a master craftsman, thank you!!!

Very interesting techniques you use and beautiful results! I'll have to try them as you've inspired me to start carving wood. I've carved stone in the past, but wood works very different to stone. Perhaps you could do a video talking about how you learned to carve and paint like you do? :)

I'm really glad to have inspired you, Charles! I will keep it in mind to do a video about how I learned to carve and paint. Thank you for the suggestion.

Mike that`s extraordinary, you have gone the extra mile to make the most realistic snake yet. I don`t know about leather cordage is it to do with saddlery? also the paint is light sensitive, so does this stiffen the tongue you made as it looks like it does? My dentist uses UV light to harden fillings is this the same process? There now Mike, is that enough questions for you? No 81 eh, your patience is incredible, looking forward to no 82 and onwards.
Regards to you and your lovely family from John in England.

Thank you, John! I had some fun with this one. This type of leather cord is used mostly for necklaces. The paint is not light sensitive, but the liquid plastic is. It is really fun to work with because it sets hard under UV light in just seconds. Yes it is what stiffened the leather and added a wet looking shine. It is very similar to what a dentist uses. Take care my friend! I'll see you on the next one!

Thanks Mike I appreciate you taking the time to tell me, it is most useful, as not many carvers are so forthcoming with their information, and it is most helpful, You are the Best Mike, and we Will see you on the next one, Regards.
