If you end up replacing what would you go with? We have newer Ruuds and have had great experiences with them. Your Carrier and Trane look like nice units too.

You need gages on it to help pin point the issue and your next unit DON'T get a lennox..my opinion

Yes, this is a rant. but with good reason.
10 year old isn't worth fixing? The other unit is dry within a week. I have equipment that has 1980's manufacture dates on them and they're serviceable, if not repairable. Remember, this is not your money you're spending. It's someone else's, in this case, your mothers.
You know, $40 in Nitrogen and some soapy water will let you know where the gas is going. Add in $50 for the torch and braze. You have to put in work to find and fix. It's less work, cost less and at the end, learn something and you'll have the same result. I'm taking for granted you've labeled yourself an HVAC tech. or an apprentice.
Going off of what you have posted, you've done no measurements or leak testing. You're guessing and making excuses. This is a display of troubleshooting skills at its worse.
That is all the makings of a terrific sales tech, and a terrible HVAC Mechanic. Is this really at your mothers house? The real problem isn't the equipment, its the guy working on them, if its you, you are just terrible, you seriously need better training and should call an actual pro. And to do this to your own mother, in this economy? This had better be a grift. I honestly see this same thing every fricken day done to home owners who are taken advantage of by folks like you're portraying because of their ignorance on AC equipment.
My simple rule of thumb. If you can't measure it, you can't manage it. If you do not know ( point or measure) the actual fault (hole, oil, burnt component, measurement showing fault, etc) you do not make a determination (manage the repair). An icy coil is an effect, not the cause. Dry unit is an effect, not a cause.
You seem like a bright kid but heading down a dark path.

@@user-cz8do7xl8u don’t be rude, you’re not the one working on the system. Lennox isn’t my cup of tea, and my mom SAID HERSELF that she wants to replace it. For you to hate on me, knock me down, and call me a bad apprentice/tech, absolutely makes me sick, you have no respect. It’s not your system, you’re not working on it. And don’t EVER mention my mom

Your rant has no good reason in this scenario. He doesn’t need a keyboard warrior. Evidently-it’s low. There’s no reason to investigate any further with the circumstance he is in.
If he has proper airflow and good field conditions it’s low on charge. Sure, it could be fixed, but it’s the customers choice. Yes I do agree that nobody should be told to replace their system without a thorough leak search, but this isn’t a system out in the field. He is simply checking out his own system. 1980s units were built to much higher quality standards.
With a Lennox unit it’s not worth it since they are cheap junk. I think it’s a smart move to recognize the point where you stop putting band aids on money pits. The real 10 year old that needs fixing is you

Best just to ignore these comments and remove them. You shouldn’t waste your time on these lil kids that just love yapping random things and the fact that they do not know what they are talking about nor how they tribute to society.

You sound like an absolute loose cannon. Leave him alone. You have absolutely no room to be talking poorly like that about his passion in this. And let me tell you I have autism and ADHD and I don’t even know super much about HVACR myself nor am I interested in it as much as him, but I wouldn’t ever trash talk about his skills like that and it’s not any of your business whatsoever in his moms choice. If he says he is going to replace his unit then so be it, it’s his unit, not yours. You talking bad about him like that reflects pretty poorly on you. If you ask me, it’s you that’s actually in the wrong.
