    Very cool product, but that packing box looks like a product from 90's. Haha just kidding, but they should repacked the product with a more modern box so that the product feels 'high quality'.

    I give you kudos! This thing is a godsend. I have several mini-dv camcorders, a HD Mini-dv camcorder, several Sony digital8 camcorders and a Hitachi VM D865LA digital8 camcorder and they ALL eventually have the same problem: WORN OUT TAPE HEADS and this CLEARCLICK HD 4K EDITION is just wonderful because those camcorders take good video footage. It's not about a 8k or 16k or a 24k camcorder, it's about lighting, composition, audio and knowing how to use contrast when you are shooting and therefore my above camcorders can still get the job done and this CLEARCLICK HD 4K EDITION ensures I can still keep utilizing them. - James D. Nice review, thank you for doing this. Only issue I had is when you're talking about the audio wave forms, and audio quality, you said "I'll let you decide that", which makes me think uh oh, something isn't right with the audio. My suggestion would be since people are wanting to know your thoughts and opinions, let us know. Tell us what you think even if it's less than complimentary to the product. I'm thinking about buying one, but now I'm not so sure based on that comment. Thanks though for the well done review.

    One thing I'm not 100% clear on, and maybe I'm not thinking in the right terms, If I plug my Sony Handycam Hi-8 video camera in via the Analog input, will this device result in perfect transfer? Will I have better resolution than using say the ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 2.0 version? I want a as perfect as a transfer from both VHS and Hi-8 as I can get, maybe even better if possible, ha. Thoughts? advice?

    • @motch6182
      @motch6182 3 года назад

      I think i may have had my question answered on Amazon "Analog video capture works but it's locked to a 16:9 aspect ratio. This means everything that you're recording is stretched out and not true to the original 4:3 aspect ratio of source content." This would NOT be good if this is true and can't be adjusted. Thoughts?

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  3 года назад +4

      There is not really such a thing as a "perfect" transfer, but for the most "accurate" transfer, assuming your Hi-8 cam is from North America, you would want to maintain the native 29.97 interlaced frames per second (59.94 fields per second).
      Lossless video is not really an option with consumer hardware or software, but the least lossy codec for such a transfer is DV-AVI, the compression used by MiniDV camcorders and Digital8 camcorders. Also, high bitrate MPG-2 looks pretty good. This is used on outboard DVD recorders. For that reason, I recommend a DVD recorder set to XP mode (1 hr per DVD) using S-Video cable for the most accurate transfer of your Hi-8 footage. You can then rip MPG-2 files from the DVDs, and these will remain interlaced.
      The video capture devices I have reviewed on my channel all convert interlaced footage to progressive scan, resulting in artifacts that can be quite noticeable on scenes with fast motion. For that reason, I consider these devices less than perfect for transferring footage that was originally recorded for the NTSC transmission standard, including Hi8 and VHS.

    Does this have rollover storage, or does it simply fill up the memory and then stop? Also, can it break up videos into smaller segments. If so, could make a good pairing with an old video camera as a good resolution security camera.

    • @john_thorpe
      @john_thorpe 2 года назад

      If it's anything like the way the SD one I have is, it fills up the memory and reports "Insufficient Storage Available" and it automatically breaks up the video in 2 hour chunks if the recordings are more than 2 hours long.

      @hawleygriffon9290 Год назад

      Interesting you say that. You'd think an updated device with better codecs and more options and requiring no ripping of discs would be a better way to go. Also, I see also from Cloner Alliance this use of FAT32 over NTFS. For the life of me, I can't understand why? I used to use my Hauppauge to record TS files in 1080p and even though they were large files, I never had a problem with them. Splitting things and combining them was always problematic. Also, an inability to record to actual set bit rates seems a bit backward. Most of my DVD recorders can do that. Does the OBS capture software allow it? I have never used that. The change in audio Also seems odd. I wonder if the Cloner Alliance boxes also do that? Many of these devices seem to use the same chips and hardware, so who knows? Very complete video though. Thank you...

    • @OmegaTI
      @OmegaTI Год назад

      @@hawleygriffon9290 FAT32 is compatible with many more systems, that may be the reason. I agree with you you though NTFS would make more sense since 4K files are so large.

    • @hawleygriffon9290
      @hawleygriffon9290 Год назад +1

      @@OmegaTI I think it may also have to do with what costs the company. Would we have a lot fewer devices if Android wasn't free? NTFS I don't believe is either, nor Dolby Digital which most of my expensive DVD recorders use (Panasonic, Sony and Pioneer) but lesser brands do not (Liteon) and instead use AAC. Does this unit allow PCM recording? That is important to me for some situations for audio cleanup since many programs I use can't use Dolby Digital as they never paid for the codec.

      You didn't provide much info about your computer (PC, Mac, desktop, laptop?).
      If you have a full size computer (not laptop), it probably has an available PCIE slot inside the machine. I show how to hook up a PCIE firewire card in THIS video:
      ruclips.net/video/YlqxTt75Ntw/видео.html
      If you have a Mac, it probably has a thunderbolt hookup. If it does, there are Firewire to Thunderbolt adapters.
      Another option is to purchased a used DVD recorder. Many (but not all) of these have a 4-pin firewire connection. You could then rip the video file from the DVD.
