A quick tip for those who want this. Make sure you buy the lite version of the CM4 do not buy one with emmc flash memory or you won't be able to use a SD card you'll be stuck using the flash memory it came with and it takes more steps on how to mount the CM4 and write recallbox or retropie. You can use the Gpi Case 2 as a IO board to flash what you want but like I said you won't have SD card support. I learned the hard way and even tried writing a boot from SD script from the raspberry pi loader and it didn't work. So like i said buy a lite without eMMC.
I know this might have seemed a little negative, but I actually really liked this thing. 😅 What do you guys think though? Oh and I already caught a couple things I forgot to mention. 🤦♂️ Check out the blog post for those: sudomod.com/gpi-case-2-review/
there is no hard rest on this thing and its driving me crazy. it never goes into the dock and just works. right now its frozen on me and the only 2 options i have is to let the battery die or take out the pie... which is a pain in the ass. when im playing it in hand held mode... i love it. but setting it up and use other than games im not a fan. is it that hard to get a hand held with the CM4 that JUST WORKS (and has at least 1 analog stick)
good vid, wasnt sure about the first gpi case but this one looks much improved. I usually find isopropyl alcohol works well for Battery sticky removal, still need patience but usually loosens the glue quite well
The downside is finding a CM4. I got a CM4 Lite without Wifi because that's all they had. Luckily I have a Bluetooth USB that I can dock with and play games with. I do agree, use a CM4 Lite but get the Wifi and go for the 2gb or 4gb RAM so bigger games run smoother.
Love this stuff! Your videos rekindled my love of modding (or at least trying to) and I’m now on a handheld kick again! Keep up the good work my friend.
Any insight on how the power circuitry handles being plugged in while playing? Can it use external power? Will it simultaneously charge the internal LiPo battery?
Thanks for the video! QQ - do you think you could dual boot this with say... Ubuntu? I wonder if it could function as a low end desktop PC when docked (on top of the gaming OS)
Now that would be interesting. 🤔 You could at least install the raspberry pi desktop on top of retropie and have a script/shortcut in emulationistation to reboot into it.
Wow, great thing! I was a fan of your builds from the first hour and build my own PiBoy with your help. Now, after a few years, these story keep going on, nice! Greetings from Germany 🤘
I get the design choice of keeping the speaker in the original place for pure aesthetics but that console would be monumentally better had they put different style speakers in the side or top dead space and put an analog stick in the speaker location… That’s really where it needs to be to be comfortable… Docking it puts it in the same bracket as a lot of powerful emulation consoles… Ir definitely is cool, but they need to make that analog stick happen
Please do a Lakka tutorial on this one. Also when showing the "old" three devices at the start of the video, what's the third one? "Only" a modded DMG with a swapped display or something else?
does it matter what type of CM4 you get. I got the CM4 8gb Lite and i flashed the sd card and all i get is a black screen when starting GPI case 2 on. I tried resitting the cm4 a couple of times and even took the back case off to make sure it was sitted properly and still no luck.
Hi wermy I freezed my gpi case 2 with cm4. I can't turn off with the power button. How I can it hard turn off? I have to wait the battery is over? Thanks man!
Dude Please stop apologizing for giving us content to watch, you're awesome and I for one love your content, and hope to see a revision on the minty pi with the compute module and a nub analog stick sometime.
i have been using mine for a month now and really love it and as patrick says go with the lite as you will save a lot of working sorting out the os.for mine im running stock retropie as it runs really well with no added scripts
I wish the battery pack on this was more easily replaceable (similar to the excellent LiPo mods for the original GPI Case.) Batteries wear down and die after a couple years. I can still see myself wanting to play this many years in the future... just like my original Game Boy!
a bit disappointed with the soldered-in battery, i was surprised you didn't mention that as a disadvantage apart from that, i can't wait to see videos about your own projects again, like an even better mintypi or something
Sad they didn’t figure out a way to put a L2 and R2 button on the back. I recently upgraded my GPI case with a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and I figured that is enough power to run anything on this thing they the controls can support.
Hey I wanna get into making a raspberry pi handheld for myself (I already own a raspberry pi 3 but I didn’t set it up myself) and I personally like the option of docking it to be on the tv as well as the more powerful compute model 4 (opposed to the pi zero or compute model 3 seen on other portables) however the limited control options for the portable mode is off putting, so I was was wondering (asking for anyone who has experience with this kind of stuff) would it be possible to mod this system to be able to use the button pcb of the circuit shield instead, and if it is how could it be done to not impede on functionality (I’m aware that both pcbs have the buttons and screen on the same board so idk how that would work), I know this is a little ambitious for a first project but I would like to find a way to get the best of both worlds Thanks in advance Some guy on the internet
Maybe... But other companies like Anbernic have done DMG-style handhelds that included an analog stick in the lower left. Not to mention things like the Circuit sword/shield from Kite - tons of those builds have an analog stick, including mine. :)
I thought the same thing. I made a Pi portable arcade in a steamer trunk that stacks with 2 arcade sticks. I wanted to upgrade and use this as the brains figuring I will get more use out of it but have not been able to find a cm4 anywhere.

Wow I just saw this and I finished setting up my GPI now I want the GPI 2 lol

Great video. I can't imagine people complaining about any of your vids. They're great. Thanks for posting! I just entered.
how much did they pay you not to mention the horrid screen? you telling me you didnt notice the ghosting from the 30ms response time?
I enjoy that you are a source for modding I can trust and understand

sawing with floss is the old trick ive seen for things like glued on windscreen phone holders and such

@@wermy Cool! Thanks for replying to me! Knowing that it's possible makes it really appealing to me :)
Is there any way to a minty pi board? Can I make one from scratch? Or mod a raspberry pi?
How is the + pad ? Exactly like the one on original Gameboy
is helger still making minty pi 3.5 pcb boards id love to build one but they have been out of stock
Love that improved screen! I have the original GPI Case, and the higher resolution on the GPI Case 2 has me really wanting one.

What ram configuration should you go for for the n64 and like systems? Will the 4gig model work or should you go all the way to the 8 gig?
Wish it came with different colors or gives you the option to choose different shells
i‘m a little late, but would like to know if it‘s possible to make a dock like that by yourself. What kind of parts does something like that need?

How did you use the GPI case 2 with a CM4 with eMMC? Could you install the OS on the eMMC or could you use the SD Card even though your CM4 had eMMC?
Hello!
Awesome video as always.
I bought the normal edition, do you think it can be connected to the TV without the base?
thank you!
It’s been a while since you’ve uploaded lol. Great video as usual!
How easy is it to install the CM4? They made it straight forward with the GPi 1 and I still love using it for GameBoy games.
I'm still on the fence with getting a handheld like this. I'd like the GPi 2 case improvements but be able to use my pi 2 zero instead.
Please do a Lakka tutorial on this one. Also when showing the "old" three devices at the start of the video, what's the third one? "Only" a modded DMG with a swapped display or something else?

I say I think the issue is being hung-up on the Game Boy DMG looks

Ok, this is epic
Doesn't look like adding an analogue nub is gonna be too straightforward then?
Subscribed. I hope i win this one
you werm! you are looking fit AF broseph. love your channel my dude!
loved it tiniy weird mini switch vibes
Only one issue: good luck finding a cm4. Really nice device other than that, an analog stick would be nice though.

my gpi never worked. and i was never able to fix or return :(
Could you play ps2 or download android on this
Your gpi case 2 screen is not centerd. Shame they cant put it in right place
Awesome vid
the gpi2 looks great!!
Definitely wasn't a fan of the first gpi case because of lack of rechargeable battery and not so great lcd. Purchased today. Thanks
Too bad all CM4s are on back order until September :(
How about a video of adding roms to a GPI Case 2.
You should make mintypi 4!!!
a video on GPI case 2 vs GameShell ClockWork?
can you pls make aother minty pie. I really like watch them :DDDD
Hopefully I could win it
Rip minty pi
do a dock teardown 🪛
US only.
Just ordered it of Amazon Canada. Should be here tomorrow.
@@MaxPower_Designs enjoy. The competition is US only though.
@@Sanddancer75 ah yes that! As always! Guessing shipping out of country is just too expensive.
Great video!
