  • Were you just diagnosed with cataracts? Maybe you've known you have cataracts for years and have no idea when is the right time for surgery. Maybe you are putting it off because the thought of all of the testing, surgery, and recovery is too overwhelming. Facing a diagnosis like this can be scary!
In this video, I discuss what to expect along the journey from the day of diagnosis, how doctors and patients together make decisions regarding surgery, what tests are done, what the day of surgery can feel like, and what to expect during recovery. It's time to get familiar and comfortable with what is to come, because the truth is-- we all get cataracts!

I had my cataracts for more than 7 years before they finally got bad enough in December of 2023 that it was affecting my vision. I was informed of it at the same clinic as my wife had been in this same clinic and she was really pleased with her cataract surgery. I always wore eye glasses for extreme far sightedness since I was 3 years old. I decided that since I could not focus my left eye no matter the corrective glasses it was time. The surgeon agreed and so I went on the journey, after several tests, measurements and finally the day arrived on Feb. 29th for the left eye. Immediately after I came out of the sedation I could see clearly and oh my god the colors popped, I put down the heavy thick glasses I had been wearing for 63 years. Yes the right eye was blurry without the glasses but my brain disregarded the input of the right eye. I did experiment and have the left lens of my old glasses removed but all that did was give me double vision. On March 13th back in for the 2nd eye and Oh my god what a difference now having 2 eyes that clearly see at distance was beyond believe. I had the drop less cataract surgery on both eyes and post op went really smooth. On April 15th back in for the 4th time on both eyes and the correction for distance on the right eye is nothing and correction on the left eye was +0.25. My reading power needed was +2.25. I was not a candidate for multifocal premium lens so I got what medicare would pay. I am over the moon for the monitoring, help and the general really good doctor I had. To go from a +6.25 in the left eye and a +6.00 in the right eye to having these light weight glasses with no real correction required is way beyond what I expected as I expected maybe a +2.00 for corrections in both eyes. I had my expectations completely blown out of the water.

Thank you Dr Elizabeth! I'm here after you responded to my comment on your video, "You were diagnosed with glaucoma, now what?" I appreciate all the information you provide; all the scenarios, different exams and treatments.. This video eased my anxiety. Now I can go back and review my patient visit notes, looking for the exams given. Luckily, my follow up appointment after some recent exams resulted in a favorable outcome. No glaucoma yet and no concern for cataracts yet either. I'll have another appointment in six months. Hoping for the same. Best wishes to you!!

I am so impressed with this lovely doctor! This is the most informative channel out there for cataracts. I have listened to most all of them. I wish my doctor could have told me all this. I appreciate her channel and her sincere approach to helping allay our fears

Wow, lots of information to take in. Thanks so much Dr. Elisabeth. I see my doctor in a couple of weeks and look forward to her input. The night driving glare has gotten so bad that I don’t want to drive at night anymore.

i wish there were a 'benchmark' test. Something that says for certain you will or will get x amount of benefit. Ive had WMD for several years and get injections every 90 days. My vision isn't good anyway and no one can tell me if I would benefit or by how much my overall vision might benefit from CAT surgery. Seems to me, a lot of this is more about the $$ than it is for the patient.

Dr. Elisabeth - QUESTION: I'm 78 this July 2023 and had laser surgery with a lens in 2016 years ago. They did not say there were any different lenses just gave me an ID card that says Acry Sof IQ Model SN60WF with UV Blue Light filter. I told them I wanted to be able to see distance clearly as I do a lot of photography. But now each eye sees two images. When I look at the moon, I see an additional image of the moon overlapping. I see two moons offset and overlapping each other like a fingernail effect. Right after the operation, the Dr said I had liquid under my eyes and did not want to decide or do anything until after it cleared, but this has never happened. What can I do?

Cataract surgery is actually one of the safest surgeries out there in terms of very low percentages of complications. Following pre and post-operative instructions is very important to ensure the best result. I wish the best for you!
