    Those thermostats you show are wonderful. I use them for everything from controlling our GH woodstove to walk in cooler. They do cooling or heating so you can even give them year round chores. Takes about 5 seconds to change temps and the differential is settable down to 1F.

    Use a solar water heater during the day to heat the barrels up. Depending on how big you build your solar heater, you could pump 160degree to 220degree water back to your drums by night fall.

    Good tips, still sealing cracks in my green house, use the old candle flame trick to find drafts.

    I had a thought on the material used on the floor. I'm thinking that a thick layer of mulch would be a great idea for cold climates since it would be a great insulator (thinking of leaves or wood chips or mulch with chickens adding their nitrogen). If you have the correct Carbon to Nitrogen ratio (30-1) you'll get really good heat off put as well.
    Also, just thinking about the bucket heater you are using. Another option to look at would be aquarium heaters. They are made for fish tanks (at least small fish) and would be safer I think.
    Thanks again for your video.

    Your instructional videos are very informative. I am moving to Southport, NC, a zone 8 area, in mid-2015 and appreciate your neighborly advice. Can you tell me about your SLO filter(s) or the manner in which you remove solids? Thank you.

    Question for you: I like the gravel walk way holding heat and releasing at night, would it increase the heat absorption if the rocks were black? Also what do you think about building a water trough system into the walk path and filling it with both rock and water, is it possible that might hold a little more heat during the night? Let me know what you think, I'm trying to design my system before I get to the farm. Thanks

    By the way, where did you get your greenhouse, why did you choose that type, and what type of walls would you recommend for a greenhouse in a desert area where there are extremes of heat and cold? Once again, thanks for posting!

      Jane I have had greenhouses for around 25 years. I built my greenhouse and the design just fit my backyard best. I always recommend removable walls when one has the extreme of hot and cold weather. I live in North Carolina a few nights ago it was 7 degrees windchill below 0. In the summer we can easily reach 100.

    At about 13:30, you were mentioning that you could suffocate your tilapia by covering them too tightly when trying to keep them warm on really cold nights. Would it be a good idea to glue styrofoam insulation to the bottom and outsides of the completed wooded containers after you lined them? That could help them keep warm or cool wouldn't it? Is there any reason not to have a small wood stove in your greenhouse? I'm new to aquaponics, so just asking... Great video!

      Foam on the outside of beds and tanks work just fine. Years ago I had problems when I try to cover the tank with poly and made it air tight. I would have thought they would be enough oxygen from air stone and water flow from beds. It worked fine overnight but the next day when the greenhouse started to heat and the water started to heat oxygen levels dropped in the tank.

    what are your thoughts on the use of rock dust lightly applied to gravel beds?

  • @woodeye667

    Thanks - what is your humidity readings? We no longer have blooms and our humidity runs 90% +. Also, did the tank heater have internal thermostats - the ones we saw would not turn on until 38 degrees.

    What do you think about putting a layer of mulch below the gravel floor?

      Mulch is good but I am in zone 7 so its not that cold here and when it is cold its only a few weeks

      Reefing 4 Dummies I used 6 mil greenhouse poly for years. This last year I changed over to a 20 mil vinyl. I am not sure I like the vinyl better than the 6 mil poly. I will be making some changes before this fall and then I can tell you more.

    I'm not convinced you are using your space efficiently...but then again not sure how much dirt and crops they require for whatever output in whatever amount of given space per sq foot of soil. A table is still aquaponics..remember it has a sprinkler above...

    • @dboyfff
      @dboyfff 9 лет назад

      I would lay maybe one bag down...by the wet vinyl...or not..that too depends on how sensitive your skin might get...yack....its great for your lawn...so I dont think they'll cause dermatological issues...the mulsch...

    • @GrowDinnerAquaponics
      @GrowDinnerAquaponics  9 лет назад +1

      dboyfff Greenhouse space is efficient as I would like for it to be. Greenhouse is 12 feet x 16 feet and has around 200 plants and produces around 150 - 200 pounds of fish per year. As for the comment about soil we have no soil or sprinkler above.
