Ken, I repaired my part 54 with a quick solder job and amazingly it now works. This is great information as I have run across 2 rc's with this issue. The first one was repaired by buying a new 54... Grrr ! wish I had seen this sooner.
Good info Ken and thanks for sharing. It’s good practice when working on printed circuit boards to wear an anti static strap thus preventing any possible damage to the components that populate the PCB.
Good find, Ken...! I would have heated up my soldering iron and made short work of those 'dry' joints...! Glad to see you digging into the "nuts & bolts" of these machines! Thanks for posting!
drove up from Alabama yesterday to visit the fine folks at Vivid Aerial.. Well worth the 3 hour drive. Great guys there.. Took my controller right in their shop. Let me fly their simulator while I waited. The wait was not long at all, enjoyed walking around their shop and meeting the guys there. Thanks Ken for pointing out this issue..
Thank you, Hard to find good videos like this... But, this is the stuff we as commercial operators need to know, and most of the techs keep it close to them since it is how they make easy money.
Ken ,I had this very problem just this last weekend. I have a P4 with no HDMI module but I had been having issues with connectivity. Also i could not connect with any of my normal FPV apps either. I remembered this video and watched it again and sure enough when i wiggled the USB connection on the controller I lost and then regained connection. I will take it apart to examine solder joints and to tweak the retention springs. The fit is almost too loose on the connector but MFG tolerances are a reality in all things. Thanks for the heads up .
i had this exact situation. bought this hdmi module for the p4p and got the glitchy screen. no firmware fixes app tweaks cable jiggles did anything. will try fill-soldering those points. if that works ill be AMAZED. AMAZED I tells ya.
I have the same issues. Did it fix yours? The last time I used my P4 the damn app glitched and the drone took off on its own! I was trying to force it to come back to me but it was fighting me! I finally had to crash it to get it down as it was heading for power lines! I have been swamped of late and have not had time to try this fix. I need to use the drone in a week or so and really want this damn problem solved. I have had this problem since day one!
Got one of these from Amazon about a year ago. Had so many green bars and breakups, I removed it and everything returned to normal. Probably was the same problem mentioned here. A year to late Ken. I sent it back.
G/day Ken. Greetings from OZ. This problem has us to the point of quitting the P4P. After this mod we are hoping we will be good. Thanks for this. Cheers 🇦🇺
Thank you soooo much. just got my P3A yesterday and by today I cant connect - same issue. I have troubleshooted, reset, changed cables, updated firmware of the aircraft. (the remote cant update cos i need the usb to work). I talked to DJI (their customer service is crap) they said I should send it over to their repair centre (which is halfway across the globe from where I am). I will rip it apart today and give feed back on the development. Wish me luck!!!
I Ken't believe that DJI is making these types of errors with their products! Thanks for letting everyone know how to fix the problem!!! BTW nice microscope video!!! Lol
Thanks for the heads up, mine has never given me any probs but its good to know how to fix. For the price of the unit you would expect better.. Thanks for sharing..
WHY OH WHY CAN'T ELECTRONICS COMPANIES JUST USE NORMAL SCREWS. Put anti temper stickers if they're worried about warranties... You're running a great channel by the way Ken, frequen relevant uploads that range from flights to fixes! Keep it up!
I don't own a Phantom,,, yet. But, I still enjoy watching your videos if not for any other reason than their so very detailed. Watch I love. Most videos just rush you though the process. Thanks for the videos. Oh, I still haven't herd back from the FCC on FPV transmitting yet.
Ken, if you feel that this could potentially cause a threat to the health or safety of the user or others, you can submit it to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. If enough people submit this same issue, they can force DJI to issue a recall. Here is a link to the CPSC website where you can submit your information: www.saferproducts.gov/CPSRMSPublic/Incidents/ReportIncident.aspx As always, thank you for sharing this information! Safe Flying
Well, if the device gets disconnected while you're flying, you had a spotter, and you were looking down at the screen, you might not be able to see where you're going, and the drone could hit the spotter. It's a bit of a stretch but I think it may go through :D.
P4 owner with the HDMI module. From day one, I've had issues with the green glitches and sometimes it's so bad I can't see enough to fly it back. I've had to look at the P4 and fly it visually back to home. I've also had app crashes. I've tried the firmware update but that didn't really help. I've also cleaned all files off of the tablet but the green glitches are still there. I reduced the bandwidth of the video feedback down to as low as it could go. Still, the green glitches are there. I have noticed that that HDMI module get really hot too. I've wondered if it was an overheating issue. Perhaps, the cold solder joints are reacting to the heat and become more glitchy. I will open my HDMI module and apply this fix. I hope that it will help. Thanks, Ken! Best WIshes!
Ken, I’m a long time viewer...first time subscriber...I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Your humor is champion, and the subject of your posts is “spot on” (timely). You voice the words of many of us in your video uploads. You’re on the “cusp of our inquiry” with every upload. All I can can say is “thank you beyond words”. Keep it up, I’m in your “posse”. If I have a question of DJI systems, I search you first. You’ve “been there....done that” already. Thanks for your effort and interest. It magnifies mine. Chris
Thank you Ken for the great video. Did I mention you are my favourite 'content producer'? Because you are my favourite content producer. (Not that I condone the use of labels). When you were undoing those screws I had vivid flashbacks to when I modified my Phantom2 to accept a video tx module. The poor quality jeweler's screwdriver that I was using slipped and went into my left palm - I could see the tip poking the skin on the outside of the my hand. It managed to miss all the bones and nerves but my biggest regrets to this day was not taking a photo of it before I pulled it back out. And I wasn't going to put it back in for a photo, that's for sure. But enough about me, thanks again for this video - and for the 'scroller'.
Hi buddy,,I’m having a problem with my p3p,,,I’ve updated the drone and tried the controller but now the app doesn’t connect to controller and nothing wants to connect to it,,I spoke to a local drone company and the mentioned that I might have a problem with my board in my controller but after watching this video of yours,I think you might of solved my problem hopefully,,,I’m just wondering where you said that the 4 soldering points may be the problem,,what do I need to do,add more soldering on top of the previous ones,,,I’ve seen spare boards on eBay at £10 and are advised as being original but they are from China and I don’t want to waste my time putting a part in my controller that might be fake and then my drone flys off but hopefully this is what my problem is 👍
Just a thought, but could you narrow it down to the USB by trying Litchi? Awful app but if the glitching is still there it might prove that hardware is the issue
Dave Billings I purchased a what I thought was nice new soldering station on eBay with a full two year warranty for $120. When I got it, I found the iron would heat up to around 130 degrees and then cool back down to 85 even though I had it set at 330 degrees. After fighting with the seller, I just filed an eBay refund claim and decided to open up the case on the soldering station to see what was wrong. No! I didn't send it back for various reasons. First one is the seller should have honored his damn warranty in the first place! I ended up resoldering 7 wires that you were literally able to move in and out of the solder joint! I just decided to resolder all the joints after seeing that. Works great now! Used my old 40 year old soldering iron to fix my brand new soldering iron, Go figure! That's China parts for ya!
Ken, I have the same problem, however I went into the software and turned the HDMI output off and that cleaned up the video problem with the tablet. if I turn the HDMI Output back on the problem returns. So, I do not get to use the Fat Shark but I can fly my P3P with out the video problem.
If you start the DJI GO app and have a video feed on your tablet select the quad copter icon at the top of the screen. Then select the HD icon. turn off simultaneous image to app and HDMI. I also turned off Display OSD on HDMI Output and Use metric units on HDMI output. The last two may not be necessary. I am using a P3P and an iPad mini 4. Pat
Patrick D. McGinnis yeah I have follow these steps and on my HD menu I don’t have the option to turn Anything on or off it’s so frustrating I’ve been reading DJI have removed this option out from the go app
Hi Ken, I got mine in and installed it today for my P3 4k. The bottom slot for the bottom (wide) cable is much wider than the original. It is much wider than what I see in yours, or anyone elses video. All I could do is insert the cable anyway in a relatively central location and lock it down. I haven't tested the hdmi yet because the new input on the module is much smaller than a standard hdmi cable so I have to go find an adaptor somewhere. I guess this means they made a new module, but I have no idea if it's going to work.
Hi Ken .... Sometimes when i fly the app just shuts off (while the drone is in the air and i almost have a heart attack) I use a Samsung Galaxy A5 and it's new ... I tried a few thing but nothing works ... It dont do it all the time but it's a pain in the a** ... Could it be because of the part 54 ?? I just fly and all of a sudden the app closes for no reasons ... Never had a accident for now but ... Thank You so much Ken !!
Also if you have a bit of time you can watch the videos i shot in my home town Beauharnois,Quebec,Canada ... You can leave a comment positive or negative (i can take it) lol and maybe subscribe,That would really make my day !!
Hello! Tell your heart that even when the app crashes, you can still control the drone. Yes, most likely it's Part 54. Newer versions are more robust for some reason. It's the USB connectors that are the weak link. Try my fix, then buy a new one if the issue persists.
I have viewed all the problems and fixes with the DJI drones. I can not yet bring myself to buy one, with all the s/u, internet and problems. Other drone companies are catching up with DJI at 1/10 the price. How much longer DJI will see crap to us, at $2000 a pop. KEN we need you to hold them to the fire to get results.
Do you think that opening the controller will void the warranty? I just say this because I recently sent my controller back (when it was out of warranty) due to a common issue with the battery not holding a charge and they replaced it for free even though the warranty was well over. They gave me a hard time about it and i worry that if someone had a other issue with their remote but had opened it, they may be SOL. Wouldn't want them to be mad at good ole Ken Heron either ;)
Hey Cory-- Thanks for the KENcern... But I only opened the module area. DJI manufactures the HDMI module with the understanding that owners will install it themselves. The battery compartment might be another story.
Cory Armitage you have to open it to install the HDMI module anyway, not to mention DJI makes this part#54 so I don't see them voiding your warranty over opening the RC....
Charlie Martin thanks. I didn't realize that it was an external part and that my DJI controller doenst have an HDMI output on it from factory :) I'm a little embarrassed lol
Hey Ken, I fly a P3P, and I've been chasing the green screen/loss of video/pixelation for over a year! It started one day while in flight about 40 feet away. I've even bought a new aircraft, but I still have the problem. What was the final fix for you? Was it this USB connection? I don't have the HDMI connection, but have a similar USB connection on the GL300B remote. Thanks!
good morning friend, I want to ask you if you had some problems with video transmission like the ones that happen to me when I move my p4p to about 400 meters, the video signal received on my mobile phone has a faint dark shadow that repeats intermittently damaging my footage ... do you think it's the transmission module of the control, which has some flaw?
Hey ken my HDMI module Was working fine I got it in March but when I go to hook the HDMI to my field drone it disconnects the drone, just all of a sudden start working I hope it’s not and update firmware issue. I also cannot use it on the DJI goggles now for an external monitor because when I connected it itdisconnects the drone on my IPad mini 4 any help would be appreciated
I’m about to do the controller firmware first then this stage. I missed the other video I really appreciate what you have done I have my new goggles sat in the corner for almost 3 weeks just because of this part 54
Ken Heron ruclips.net/video/k2PjlnWCFdA/видео.html please watch this link this is my problem take a look I've just tried the firmware update and soldiered my part 54 and still nothing
I was hoping this contained info about issues from the hdmi out. My usb is fine, but a few weeks ago my hdmi stopped outputting the video, yet it still shows the osd info, but a black screen where the video would be. I’ve tried several hdmi cables, three different display screens, and all the same. Web searching hasn’t turned up any likely culprits. And no I haven’t updated any firmware or database info for my P4P to have triggered it. Any suggestions? With the osd portion still showing correctly indicates to me it’s not likely the hardware.
I'm having the same problem with my Mavic ,constant disconnects. When I disconnect the cable and reconnect it works. I did here the problem is in the bottom connector. Any body else having this problem?
I have a P4 and the module, if I connect my goggles via module then the screen on my Nvidia tab freezes... I wanted to let friends do a ride along with me via module And tab HDMI outputs to two sets of goggles.. Do you think this would fix that? Personally I hate screwing around with All the Damn updates, app changes, No Fly Zones and time it takes to make this thing work.
I think Nvidia just doesn't play well with the Go App. I can't remember what version of Lollipop works, but I do know that people have gotten their Nvidia tablets to work with an update.
Ken Heron Thanks, it was recommended to me and I was excited about the HDMI output port, which works well. But, again, Can't use it if using the module. Anyone in Your Army of Followers have a clue? And BTW truly appreciate your videos, your a punny guy!
Thanks for the info Ken. I didn't think that I would need to use Goggles, even though I see you use them all the time, however just the other day I was trying to video some surfers and found it very difficult. Hence I thought of you and your goggles. Now my question for you is this. I used to see you flying using your shark goggles and then Dana got you to wear his one day. Now you have the DJI Toilet seat also. Good goggles are going to cost some decent mula, so now that you have experience using both pairs, would you recommend the Toilet Seat over the sharks for the purpose of flying for say an hour to an hour and a half, as opposed to using the sharks which are designed, I suspect, more for the FPV Racer, who is probably flying all day? You thoughts please.
Great questions! The DJI goggles are better resolution, but the fat shark goggles offer a better idea of depth of field for some reason. Even though neither one is in 3-D. I prefer the fat sharks for precision flying and the DJI goggles for fun flying. Both goggles batteries last a really long time, but the fat sharks batteries last a lot longer just because they require less energy to run. Thanks for the questions!
Don't be confused! The USB connects the tablet to the controller. The HDMI connects the drone video feed to goggles or external monitor. And the hip-bone's connected to the... leg-bone. The leg-bone's connected to the...
oh, yes, also I'm looking forward to the Noah's Ark video. Yes....I'm going to haunt you about it, I mentioned it I think 8 times last Thursday night but I guess you missed them all, that's ok, there's always next Thursday night...lol
Ken, I love your channel and respect the hell out of you -- but I must kindly inform you that...gulp..it's not a "Flat Head" screwdriver, the correct term is "Slot". Please know I just want you to be the best you that you can be - and step 1 is proper nomenclature. Thanks for everything you do for the collective.
HAAA!! Thanks for the concern. Here in the states we call it a "Flat Head". Much respect for knowing (and using properly) the word "nomenclature"! It's difficult enough living in the south while being an English major.
Great vid!!!! So maybe i could get your thots on my issue? HDMI board on p4p. All is good except when plugging in HDMI cable to googles and turning on goggles. Fine if I just plug in HDMI cable. App disconnects, no vid in googles, app says disconnected. Unplug cable, then app reconnects to p4p. Strange!!!(cinimizers and dji goggles RE which did work before) Maybe a broken solder joint? Ill take a peek like you did on the USB connection. Thank you!!!!!
@@KenHeron wow this is something... i now have the same issue with the goggles not working. Now i cant remember how i fixed it! LOL didnt write it down! will this time! Any thoughts Ken, id love to hear it! Ill try looking at the HDMI solder joints....Maybe hit em with a hot iron... thanks Ken!
It's nice to have a place go to where you can find solutions to both common and not so common problems. Thanks once again Ken.
Ken, I repaired my part 54 with a quick solder job and amazingly it now works. This is great information as I have run across 2 rc's with this issue. The first one was repaired by buying a new 54... Grrr ! wish I had seen this sooner.
This has been another public service announcement by Ken Heron. Many thanks!
You're welcome.
This KEN-cludes this public service message.
Good info Ken and thanks for sharing.
It’s good practice when working on printed circuit boards to wear an anti static strap thus preventing any possible damage to the components that populate the PCB.
Cold solder joints have been the bane of my working life. Good advice Ken.
Thanks! Yes, we've all been the victim of a bad cold-solder connection, haven't we?
Good find, Ken...! I would have heated up my soldering iron and made short work of those 'dry' joints...! Glad to see you digging into the "nuts & bolts" of these machines! Thanks for posting!
Thanks. Hopefully this will help a few frustrated people.

Got one of these from Amazon about a year ago. Had so many green bars and breakups, I removed it and everything returned to normal. Probably was the same problem mentioned here. A year to late Ken. I sent it back.
So sorry!
It's manufactured by DJI, so you'd THINK it would be up to spec.
G/day Ken. Greetings from OZ. This problem has us to the point of quitting the P4P. After this mod we are hoping we will be good. Thanks for this. Cheers 🇦🇺

Fortunately, this issue only affects the app and not the actual controll-ability of the craft.
Well, if the device gets disconnected while you're flying, you had a spotter, and you were looking down at the screen, you might not be able to see where you're going, and the drone could hit the spotter. It's a bit of a stretch but I think it may go through :D.

Absolutely. --Whatever troubleshoots best.
Great work sir, very useful info. The 4 machine welds can you put a bit of solder on those 4 to firm them up?
Yes. That's what James did for mine in the shop.
Cold solder joints... Hundred dollar part good grief. Nice close up Ken...
Yeah... They need to get some dang HEAT on them parts!
Your Recall Suggestion is good. I am in the market to buy hdmi board for my P4....

Patrick D. McGinnis yeah I have follow these steps and on my HD menu I don’t have the option to turn Anything on or off it’s so frustrating I’ve been reading DJI have removed this option out from the go app
What are you flying and what tablet are you using? I just checked again and I have these options. Come on DJI, this should work. We all want to fly.
Have you voided your warentee by taking apart your DJI?
No. DJI manufactures and sells the HDMI module.
It's meant to be installed by customers.
Thanks Ken.
You're welcome.
Thanks for the great info Ken
You bet!

I know what you mean bud!
Hello sir im facing some problem my phantom 4pro obsidian, can't show video output in the display but show all the data.
Please help!
Did the video help?
What’s the sensor size in your camera? Your lighting seemed ok on video but it was a little grainy. Thanks for the tip!
I used several different cameras. Which shot?
I was looking at the first shot. Lol. I was very tired last night, and now I look at it again and it looks okay.
I see. I was in a hurry to get that video made, so I prob'ly didn't use the best light.

How much longer DJI will see crap to us, at $2000 a pop.
KEN we need you to hold them to the fire to get results.
Well, I do know that DJI reads my comment section sometimes, so perhaps they will see this thread!
Great but DJI should replace those defected units
Agreed.
Hey Cory--
Thanks for the KENcern... But I only opened the module area. DJI manufactures the HDMI module with the understanding that owners will install it themselves. The battery compartment might be another story.
Ah good point! I knew you would be smarter than to advise ppl to potentially void their warranty but I was indeed KENcerned!
Easy repair
Thanks Ken
No problem!
Thanks!
For me it was a firmware issue. This might help: ruclips.net/video/CUW8QFGNPNM/видео.html
@@KenHeron Thanks!
good morning friend, I want to ask you if you had some problems with video transmission like the ones that happen to me when I move my p4p to about 400 meters, the video signal received on my mobile phone has a faint dark shadow that repeats intermittently damaging my footage ... do you think it's the transmission module of the control, which has some flaw?
'NeverMindYourOwn' had this problem some time ago, I don't know if and/or how he fixed it.
Much appreciated.
You bet Terry!
Ken don’t forget you static strap next time
don't worry. You don't wear a static strap when you use your phone, do you?
Good point.
Check the USB connection. Try a new cord, and make sure all of your firmware is updated.
Does this mean i shouldn't buy the phantom 4?
Not at ALL!!
It's just maintenance, that's all.
Be careful with the USB connector and if you ever have troubles, you might check the solder.
Ken Heron Ok thanks, I appreciate your help
I bought the phantom 4 and the usb is broken xD ..... won't connect somehow i saw this coming....
Ken I love you I told you there was something wrong ty ty ty
I'm gonna try it now
Very good.
Try jiggling the USB cable while the app is running. If it changes stuff, then this might be your issue.
Did you do your bugs giveaway yet? Just curious cause I try to watch all your vuds and I have not seen anything yet...
I'll be posting the winner tomorrow.
That’s the trouble gremlins they’re everywhere!
danke für den tip
Sie sind herzlich willkommen für den Tipp. Ich bin sehr glücklich zu helfen, wie ich kann.
Sorry to hear that Dave.
Maybe try this: ruclips.net/video/CUW8QFGNPNM/видео.html
Grazie!!!
Thanks for the questions!
bro can i use in mavic pro this hdmi device
No, it's just for Phantom controllers.
Well after spending that kind of money for these drones you would think everything would be perfect with no defects...
that looked like a standard USB connector AND NOT HDMI......I'm confused
Don't be confused!
The USB connects the tablet to the controller. The HDMI connects the drone video feed to goggles or external monitor. And the hip-bone's connected to the... leg-bone. The leg-bone's connected to the...
oh, yes, also I'm looking forward to the Noah's Ark video. Yes....I'm going to haunt you about it, I mentioned it I think 8 times last Thursday night but I guess you missed them all, that's ok, there's always next Thursday night...lol
Dana and I saw your chats, and we are planning on filming the ark as soon as possible. Thanks Keith!
Hope you can sort it out Brad.
😁👍
@@KenHeron wow this is something... i now have the same issue with the goggles not working. Now i cant remember how i fixed it! LOL didnt write it down! will this time! Any thoughts Ken, id love to hear it! Ill try looking at the HDMI solder joints....Maybe hit em with a hot iron... thanks Ken!
Do robots make mistakes.? ;~}
Never!
(Says the "Terminator".)
Send the whole unit back to Dji it's not your job to repair it.
....won't a little chewing gum do the trick....?
Only if you're MacGyver.
